Toyota changed the engine in 2009 for the 2010 model year, and that engine largely resolved the major issue of the 2.4. So if you're looking for a Camry in this generation and you can't afford a V6, look for a 2010 or 2011. BTW, the V6 Camrys had their issues as well, most notably the oil cooler lines that were prone to bursting, and radiator failure which could lead to the engine overheating.

Oil burning becomes a problem in three ways: 1) owner doesn't check the level, and it grenades from running dry. 2) Clog up the cats. 3) Burn exhaust valves. Otherwise, just keep dumping oil in, and run it til it quits!

My parents had one that we would use collectively as the family beater; I ended up using it about 7 times out of 10. As long as you keep that oil level to safe levels, the car is perfectly reliable, comfortable and cheap to maintain. I recommend using a non-synthetic oil to makes top offs and oil changes cheaper.

Just anecdotal, but I have an 07 Camry with the 2.4 and a 5 speed manual. Did no research prior to purchasing and I still have it a year later (I don't recommend doing this obviously). 350k+ on the clock and it burns less oil than my 08 Honda Element with half the mileage, which it to say barely an appreciable amount. Checked the VIN in Toyotas records and the TSB work wasn't even done on it, just checked at the dealership and given a pink mark to say it is below the rebuild threshold. The original owner from new actually lives near me and I visited and confirmed all the drivetrain is original. I understand this an extreme exception and not the rule. lol

It's been in the family since 160,000 miles and has been super reliable. A little annoying to constantly watch the oil level but for the price I got it totally worth it.

Some YT mechanics ( Scotty ) say that 2AZFE Camry engines from 2002 to 2009 had a design flaw, Toyota made pistons rings too thin supposedly, for better mpg. Because of that the car consumed more oil after hitting higher mileage. Toyota replaced thousands of engines still under manufactures warranty.

Bought a 2008 Camry Hybrid brand new. Put 200,000 trouble free miles on it, at which point I gave it to one of my kids. By far the lowest running costs of any vehilce we've ever owned. It did eventually develop the infamous "sticky dash" problem, which Toyota paid to replace replace on some cars (ours developed it too late for it to be covered, so we just lived with it). 👋to AMD -he's truly the man on all things Toyota/Lexus 👍

Mine doesn't burn any oil (yet) and its at about 140k miles now but I've had quite a few other issues (bad charcoal canister, bad alternator, bad ABS module, headlight switch failed, melting dash, sun visors fell off, etc). My main gripe is how damn SLOW it is, my 2002 Camry with the same engine was like a rocket compared to my 07, even my 2000 Prizm would smoke the Camry, idk if its just mine or what but its dog slow.

@Dankcatvacs a lot of places do lol, and you will be forced to replace that catalytic converter over and over again. Usually, you have to get a non cheap converter. The o e m replacement is $900-$1,300 just to order it, lol. Not including the labor to replace it.. My car currently costs me at the current rate of consumption, $300-350 a year in top off oil. On top of regular maintenance,. So the who cares if it burns oil statement is pretty wild, that's the cost of purchasing three premium AAA memberships per year, or having every streaming service available subscription wise spent on engine oil. That is not a small. Amount of money in the grand scheme of things.

The 4th gen was alot better, the engine was alot more durable, making an overall reliable and stronger vehicle. The engine was pretty gutless but the torque curve was nice and it was sufficient for everyday driving, could even be fun if you put your foot down. Never driven this gen Camry with the 2.4 but I'd imagine the driving experience would probably feel pretty numb and characterless, it felt like Toyota was really bored with this car and I think that comes across in its design the most.

I would honestly say the design has not aged as well as the Accord of the same era but that is just my (potentially biased) opinion. However, the worst Toyota I think is the 2014-2019 Corolla with the CVT. Such a cheap feeling car.

The 2az Fe was massive fail, good engine on paper disastrous in practice. Having said that they are still really strong. My dad used to have a rav 4 with this motor and it had next to no oil in it from the dreaded piston ring failure issue and it was completely fine lol. The 2ar fe however is far superior, there's a guy on KZbin that got like 250 or 270 HP out of one without a turbo

The 2007-2011 were the real bad ones. The 2002-2006 had the older, better rings and not as bad.

@@Jonathan-bk3dq the 2010 and 2011 are ok as they had already switched to the 2AR engine

My dad wanted to buy this Camry but mom liked Civic better so they got Civic. Some 70k later she almost killed that Civic by driving it for a week with hardly any oil.

This is one rare occasion in the universe that a 2008 Chevy Malibu is equal or better than the 2008 Toyota Camry from my experience.

I can vouch for the contemporary Fusion as well, you couldn't go wrong with either the 4 cyl nor the V6

back then a Fusion would've been the better buy or an Accord with the K24 engine. The mechanicals were all solid in those PS. There are no modern American cars, they're all gone

In many ways, this was the nadir of the Camry much as the 2008 Accord is the absolute worst of its kind. That being said, I'd take this gen Camry over the '08 Accord all day every day

If you cant get the V6 avoid these models. This was the start of the downfall of Toyotas quality with the oil burning as well as Toyotas scandal with their cars accelerating out of control. How far theyve fallen since the early 2000s needs to be studied

YOU ACT AS IF OIL IS EXPENSIVE SUBARUS DO THIS THEY ARE STILL A AMAZING CAR man that was all in caps welp im not typing it out again but this really isn't that terrible of a problem just check weekly or bi weekly or monthly and so on just dependant on the rate it happens in the grand scheme of things if you maintain it it'll maybe cost you a extra 1-2k in oil over 8 years
