Transmission 6R80 and 10R80 Filling Process: • You will need to keep a drain pan under the fill port to catch any fluid that leaks out. • Now with the engine off, fill the transmission until its full. • Mine took just under 6 quarts. • Then, you need to start your engine and let it run until the transmission gauge shows the fluid is warm. • While it’s warming up, go ahead and shift the transmission through the gears, while keeping your foot firmly pressed on the brake pedal. • Once it’s warm, go ahead and add more fluid. • Most people have been able to add another quart of fluid, some have been able to add a little bit more. • Once your transmission is filled, you need to pull the clear tube straight up. • While the engine in running, go ahead and check the level on the dipstick. • It should be between the “A” and “B” hash marks. • Then, you need to tighten the fill plug before shutting the engine off. • Do not overtighten this plug. • Since your transmission is hot, it could weld itself to the pan once it cools down. • I recommend you barely tighten it down…let it cool off…and then tighten it a little bit more if needed.

Attempting this today thanks to you help! Your channel rocks

Hey thanks man, we appreciate the kind words! Let me know how it goes when you finish! 🤟

Job finished. It went well! I used a 500ml fluid extractor and pulled out 5 quarts fairly quickly before pulling the pan. The tin foil was a big help with what was left in the pan. I ended up getting 8 full quarts in. Filing it with the funnel and tube is definitely the way to do it. I used a couple zip ties to keep it clear of the exhaust. Also zip tied the funnel to the antenna to keep it in place. Thanks again man! I watch a bunch of these channels but yours is the one I check first for sure! 🤘

Man that's great to hear! I'm glad it worked out well for you. Using zip ties to hold it in place is a great idea. Glad you got it done brother!

What screen/head unit is in that truck? Great video, only one I've seen so far actually doing it like an average person, on their back
@TrickShiftGarage4 ай бұрын
So, that screen was from a company called "Boss". I believe it was a 10 or 11 inch screen. But, it's a piece of crap lol. I ended up throwing it away and bought a Pioneer from crutchfield.com

I have the same exact truck, although I have 190,000 miles on mine. About to do mine but most independent shops I ask around don’t advise me to. Wondering why? Not a transmission flush, just a drain and fill.
@TrickShiftGarage14 күн бұрын
It's up to you. I don't think these newer transmissions will be affected by it, but in the past mechanics noticed changing the fluid on a transmission that has never been changed before (that has 100,000 miles or more) it would cause transmission failure. This was years ago, so I dont think it applies anymore to be honest. If it was my truck, I would do a pan drop and fill like you mentioned. These transmissions are really durable and are very happy with new fluid. Let me know what you decide!

Thanks for the little tips and tricks. Did mine this past weekend and happy with the outcome. The use of aluminum foil was Awesome! How has your truck been since making this video a couple years ago? Have you changed the fluid again since this transmission change? Some sites say to do another fluid change a couple thousand miles after the first one to get rid of the old transmission fluid.
@TrickShiftGarage4 ай бұрын
That's great, I'm glad it helped! Truck has been great. I planned on doing a fluid drain (will be a lot easier now that I have a pan with a drain plug) but haven't gotten around to it yet. And you are absolutely correct. Doing a fluid change 5,000-10,000 miles after the initial fluid and filter change will help get most of the old fluid out.

How is that aftermarket pan with the fill plug holding up? I’m thinking I’ll get the same one but always a little cautious when it’s aftermarket.
@TrickShiftGarage3 ай бұрын
It's been great. The only issue you could possibly run into is if your mating surface is messed up or even your gasket. As long as it sits flush, there won't be any issues. Let me know what you decide!

That’s great to hear. Thanks for getting back to me. I’ve seen some reviews saying it’s not deep enough and the filter can’t fit properly.. so this is good assurance. Thanks for the content, sir.

Yea I've seen that too, but I didn't have that issue.

Ok. Sooo new question. Why not just install a pan with a drain plug. Then just drain and fill the pan , changing the filter every x amount of miles. Like just remove the fluid in the pan and replace without the risk of burning? Why go through the whole thing? If you're changing 5 or 6 quarts out of the pain every 50k? Which makes it simple and easy, which means i would go it more often cause i get bored and want to tinker?
@TrickShiftGarageАй бұрын
I did install a pan with a drain plug.
@jamesknight802Ай бұрын
@TrickShiftGarage I get that. But why go through the whole running it, getting it hot. Wouldn't the new mix with old regardless? I understand warm fluid flows better. But if you're not doing a flush, what's the benefit? Or did i miss something in the video
@TrickShiftGarageАй бұрын
If you want to do a flush, you can. This was just a pan drop and filter change. You have to be careful doing a flush, especially on your own. A pan drop and filter change is perfectly fine for these transmissions.
@TrickShiftGarageАй бұрын
And I still don't understand fully what you are talking about in the original comment. I thought the question was "Why not install a pan with a drain plug?"
@jamesknight802Ай бұрын
@TrickShiftGarage do you really need to run the engine and go through all the gears, or can you just drop pan and filter change? , sorry if I wasn't clear. Why heat it to the point of burn risk if you don't need to? I am just curious as I am at 212k and just dropped and changed without heating? I don't know if I am messing something up by just doing that?

I replaced the factory pan with a Dorman. I really wanted a drain plug, so this was a good choice. Here is the pan: Dorman Transmission Pan - amzn.to/2XpRVMp
