On ALL F150s with EPAS Electronic Power Steering Assist you should disconnect the Negative from the battery or disconnect the EPAS connectors before striking the knuckle for seperation of outer tie-rod, you can damage the EPAS system and its $600 replacement and BIG job....

On my 2002 F350 7.3L Diesel 6spd 4x4.. SRW. I just take a string and hook it on my tow hitch and then wrap it around my rear tire across the vertical center line and stretch that on across the front wheel- just barely touching; and I'll move the tire left and right until I have the same distance from each side of the from rim/ to the stringline--- on the frontside and rear side of that front wheel... and I'll do that on both sides of the truck and also adjust the steering wheel accordingly so that it's aligned. You have to check and re-check it a few times, but I've ran my truck for years like that and have never had tire wear issues and it runs straight down the road. It has a Dana 60 in the front, which doesn't have any caster or camber adjustment really. I think you can get offset ball joints if you really need it.. But I've never had any issues doing that myself.... It's worth taking a little bit of time pulling a stringline - Even if you end up getting an alignment anyway.

I actually set the toe on my own vehicles in the driveway myself, like you say after a couple of times you can get a really close setting, and then I just watch my tire wear, and if all is good no alignment is needed.

I mark the outer tie rod jam nut , then remove the inter tie rod . Lay them side by side then mark the new inter rod. Then screw the jamb nut to your mark. Then install.

What is the purpose of that white rubber cap? I left it off of mine and I'm nervous it's there to protect something inside the rack.

If you are talking about the white plastic cap, it isn't important.

It had play.

My truck is the same. Play in the tie rod ends on the driver's (Left Front) and extreme wear on the inside of the passengers tire (Right Front) due to misalignment.

I live in NY. My threads are all rusted. I tried liquid , heat., brute force. I can not stop the rod from just spinning. I was hoping to replace the inner an outer together to bypass the outer rusted problem. Is that not possible?

Yes, as long as you can get on the flats of the inner and unscrew it.

you did your measurements while it was straight and after did it while it was turned? did that cause any problems later on? with alignment or is that how your supposed to do it?

When I measured it the first time the outer tie rod was still installed in the knuckle. When I measured the new one I had the outer tie rod un-installed from the knuckle so I could still have it straight even though the wheels were turned. I told the owner it should be close but keep an eye on the tire wear and I recommended he at least get the alignment checked.

Also had the plastic covering the flats off the back side of the old one when measured but on when he measured the new one. But as he said, you still need to do the alignment after, so should not have any problems in that short period of time.

Will the iner and outer tie rod from this year fit a 08 cus it looks beefy compared to the one on 08
