Thank you very much for this video. Just finished the job, replaced all 6 plugs and ignition coil packs. Saved a ton of money over what dealership wanted. Plugs came out looking horrible after 86,000 miles, and each plug was gapped at about .053. She runs smooth now!

Thank you for your video. Watching your video helped me complete the same task. I have a code P0304 which was cylinder 4 misfire. My only improve is that after searching for how the cylinders are numbered, the correct numbering is from left to right 1, 3, 5 in the back (closest to firewall) and 2, 4, and 6 closest to bumper. Again, great video. Thanks, Doug

Great video! It gave me confidence that I can tackle the job. I have a 2009 Enclave with 103k miles. I was planning to change the plugs out since the car has over 100k mi. A couple days before I planned to do the work, I got code P0301 - Misfire cyl 1. I could definitely feel a problem, especially while accelerating. I wasn't sure if it was a spark plug or coil issue. I changed out the plugs and while I had it apart, swapped coil packs 1 and 2. After start up, I got code P0302 - Misfire cyl 2. Sounds like a bad coil. I ordered 6 OEM coil packs from RockAuto and that solved the misfire problem. I went ahead and changed all the coils out so I don't have to deal with this problem on the other cylinders in the near future. The job was very simple the second time around. Side note: I originally ordered the plugs specified in the owners manual: AC 41-107 Iridium Plugs. The plugs actually in the car were AC 41-990 Platinum Plugs. I purchased a new set of the original AC Platinum Plugs since they performed well and still looked good after so many miles.

Thanks a million for this video. I'll will tackle this project this coming weekend. I have an 09 saturn outlook. Same engine. It started to misfire and diagnostics said it was 2 and 4. I have purchased all 6 coils to replace and also the spark plugs along with a new gasket. Several mechanics prices ranged from 300 to 375 just to replace coils and plugs (just for labor) I bought the above parts for 200. My local auto parts store wanted 70 for each coil. I purchased them all for 100 online. I guess a tune up gets expensive these days. Anyhow, I will attempt this project tomorrow following your video. Thank you so much again for taking the time.

Thank you for this detailed informative video. I had the same problem with my 2010 traverse 78k miles. At first The task looks too big for a non mechanic But after watching your video it didn't seem hard at all. I changed the plugs with no problem. And the problem is fixed. My bank account thanks you for saving me several hundred.

Thanks a million for this video. You're the only person on the net that I could find with helpful info on doing this. I'm a small block chevy guy so when I saw the engine on my mom's car I was baffled when I couldn't find the plugs. I also would have never thought to pull the entire intake off to change them. It was way easier than it looked but I couldn't have done it without this vid.

Just performed this on my 09 Acadia as well. I also changed the lower intake gasket as in the video. Plugs looked really bad as I was at 106k miles on them.Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be & everything is running smoother now. I might add that I went with NGK spark plugs as i've had really good luck with them in other vehicles.Thank you so much sir!

Alright, I tried this before watching the video. Pretty much the same except you don't need to disconnect the side tube to the air inlet, not remove the heat fiberglass shield on top of intake manifold, and the plug connectors are more easily ans safely removed by pressing on the lock tabs while sliding a flat screwdriver on the other. Additionally, I would not recommend removing all 6 plugs first, but exchange one at a time. It was indeed hard work!

Great video. Here is a note for people in my situation. With regards to my issue of just having a misfire code on cylinders 3 and 6. On my 2009 Acadia I was able to remove the #6 coil pack without having to remove the intake manifold; I did have to unbolt the throttle body. The same is true for the rear (firewall side) coil packs 1,3,5. It looks like coil packs 2 and 4 are the reason the manifold needs to come off, to change those plugs.

Thanks for the additional info. Between you and +Jason Keeley straightening me out on the correct cylinder numbering scheme, I think anyone watching this and reviewing the comments has all the info they need to determine how deep they need to go and how to do the full job if they're replacing the plugs or any of the stubborn coils.

i am drive ability tech for gm... gmc/buick dealership. the gm plugs come pregapped . you are using aftermarket plugs in your acadia . in my experience that motor does not like after market plugs or coils. just had to change coils and plugs on a 10 acadia thursday due to a misfire underload at highway speed and the owner claimed they did the plugs. found after market plugs n coils . replaced them with GM parts... problem went away...

According to the 100 dollar diagnostic... I was having misfires also.. my rpms were bouncing with motor hesitation similar to this video.. also was getting an engine light and a low oil pressure alert that WASN'T showing up in the diagnostic. Oil levels were fine. My rpm range was at 4000.... after replacement of the plugs the rpm range went up two tics...also similar to this video the gap ranges on the plugs I pulled out were all over the place. No apparent bouncing or motor hesitation any more. Will update this post if the engine light comes back on or other warnings. P.S. they wanted 300 dollars to do this maintenance level of engine work. Thanks to this video , with the rebate I got on the plugs, cleaned and reused the manifold gasket it cost me 30 dollars and my time.... God I love google mechanics!!!! LOL

I have a 2012 GMC Acadia with 114,000 miles on it and I did not have to remove the intake at all to change the spark plugs. I had no issues removing the coil packs and the spark plugs. The whole job took about 1 hour. The only thing I had to remove was the purge valve solenoid above the number 6 cylinder (far right front of engine) to get to the coil pack and spark plug. I used the spark plug lubricant and AC Delco iridium plugs. I hope this information helps anyone with a 2012 Acadia, Traverse, or Enclave, it was not much trouble at all to change the spark plugs.

I have a 2009 Saturn Outlook, same exact engine though, and I too have had a stumbling problem with the engine. The check engine light did come on for me and when I had it check it stated that had a misfire in one of the cylinders, can't remember which one exactly, but found your video and it is exactly what my car is doing. It was very helpful in figuring out how to get to the plugs, I wasn't sure I'd be able to do it because no where else out there shows how the home mechanic can do this. They want you to have everything serviced by a dealer and spend tons of money. So this was very helpful and thanks for posting it. I just figured that I would go ahead and replace all the plugs and see if that would correct the problem.

Good video but as explained elsewhere 2, 4, and 6 are at the front. 1, 3 ,and 5 are against the firewall. I was about to make a big mistake until someone straightened me out as I had misfires on 4 and 6. I actually thought I had transmission issues since I didn't have any codes. Stuttering on upgrades will give similar symptoms. The good thing is I didn't have to remove the intake to change the number 4 and 6 coils. I did remove a connector bracket that helped me wiggle out number 6 and I removed the vacuum hose nipple right above number 4. You can see this nipple in the video. The only issue I had was that the coil boot separated from the coil when I pulled number 4 out. It was stuck on the spark plug and I had to dig it out with a 90 degree scribe.

Thanks for this vid. I own an '08 and it's about time for my plugs to be changed. I too have been experiencing the idle time dipping. I cleaned my MAF sensor, adjusted it, and replaced filter thinking it was an air/fuel ratio issue as idle is high at times. I have no codes either, so spark has GOT to be what the next step is. Cheers!! Thanks again for the share ;-)

Good video, just a few comments. 1. i would replace the intake manifold gasket, never reuse a gasket. 2. always use OEM spark plugs, never cheap out on ignition parts. 3. you said tighten the manifold bolts in a circular pattern, should be criss cross. Also you should just do one plug at a time.

You can take the engine cover off the top and access a small area to the left where you can reach in behind the intake. I have small arms and could reach all the way to the back plug. Remove the coil with a 1/4" ratchet to get to the plug. I then used a plug socket and several short extensions and added them to the socket under the cowling. Harbor freight has locking extensions that make it much easier. Hope this helps.

Mr. Thomason, thanks for sharing. When I did mine, I recall that I couldn't get the coil and plug boot to come out of the tube (it would hit the intake manifold before it cleared the hole). If the coil and boot come apart, then it may be possible the way you described. However, given how easy it is to remove the intake and give yourself total access to do the job looking straight on regardless how big your arms are, I would still do it the way I did. Thanks for the good information.

I'm guessing when they put some coolant in the motor they spilt some and it landed by your intake manifold and burnt up and evaporated, other than that I'm at a loss for what it could be.

The reason you had different gaps on the old plugs is because they are worn. The way I start new plugs in the threads is using a 8"-10" piece of 5/16 hose. Slip hose on plug, insert plug into well via hose, hand thread by spinning hose, pull hose off plug and finish with (torque) wrench. This is an old mechanic trick that I think works better than anything for starting "coil on plug" spark plugs.

Actually it's not that hard at all. I had a 305 code for misfire on cylinder 5. As I started to pull hoses I saw that I could actually see the coil pack I needed to remove. Left all hoses attached and removed the pack. Swapped it to a different cylinder and the code 305 changed to a 303, yay! The code moved, bad coil pack. Did this at 1:30 AM! Had to baby my way home and it took me an extra hour to get home. Anyway, once the code moved, put it all back together then went to the parts store this morning and got a replacement pack. Replaced it in about 5 minutes. I didn't need to pull the cover off like the video shows. I'm sure that the front ones might need the cover removed.

Hi, I just watched your video on changing spark plugs...great help, as I am in the process of replacing a coil ( #5 to be exact) in my 2009 Saturn Outlook with the 3.6 VVT engine. I am wondering if you could possibly tell me...which cylinder that is? Nowhere in my Chilton's does it call out the cylinders or how to count them or from what direction when facing the engine from the front of the vehicle.

+Jerry Mack 1 3 5 2 4 6 You don't need to remove the manifold for that one. Much easier. I just replaced two coil packs on my 2009 Outlook as well. Good luck!

+Jason Keeley thanks for the diagram. I believe you are right, despite what I say in the video. I would still recommend changing all plugs which requires the manifold to be removed. However it now makes sense that the dealer would have been able to swap my #3 and #5 plugs/coils without removing the intake.

That makes sense. I was wondering if GM was changing the gasket for each time they swap the plugs. I am going to do this work this weekend on my 2009 Acadia. I have been putting it off for a while because I keep worrying it won't start after I'm done LOL!! Thanks for the video!

I have a 09 SLT with almost identical miles. My miss or stumble is at around 65 mph though. I've had three coils replaced and it always comes back. I wonder if spark plugs are the problem. I will replace them and see if it helps. Thanks for the video.

ctcrhenderson Thanks for the reply, I changed the plugs yesterday. Only hiccup I had was that I did not have an extension long enough to reach spark plugs. After I acquired the extension it went great. Time will tell if it goes away, we haven't driven it a decent distance yet. It usually happens while in cruise control uphill around 65. Also noticed a small stumble at idle. Im thinking the plugs not being gapped correctly from the factory could be the main cause of everyones problems. If true, GMC really dropped the ball on such a minor detail. All the plugs I removed were gaped at around 51. The video helped ALOT, thanks again!!!

Bobby Larkin did That work? mine is doing the same thing (09 SLT) and the dealership said it was the 6th cylinder and it is the ignition coil. and of course they want to charge me 720.00 to replace it.

that liquid around the intake was prob an induction service, if it isnt done right on thes engines it will pool up in the 5 & 6 cylinder, i work in a GM dealership and thes engines are quite the piece of work, they work great! but when they break look da faq out! but a stumble can be a huge range of thing for easy stuff make sure you have proper oil level in this engine!

After figuring out that my 08 Acadia had starting issues at the gas station, I researched and found that a new purge valve would fix it. Well...my last trip to gas station I heard a pop (haven't received the part yet) and now...I have idle issues. Figured it'd be the spark plugs since it's intermittent and only at slower speeds but still feel the shake at regular speeds. I took a look to see where my time will be spent and those plugs were alien to me; thanks for the video...it will be my guide when I change both parts out. Not exactly certain where the purge valve is but it appears its behind the air housing assembly; do you have to remove the manifold to change out the spark plugs?

FearlessMods no coolant needed removal. Only removing the plenum so I didn't get into the intake itself. Thanks for your video. It gave me the confidence to tackle this pretty easily. And saving $350 in labor from local GM stealership.

I've been having the same issue with MINE! Just found this video while doing research. My #6 cylinder keeps filling with oil. I get a drop in RPM's and eventually have a severe loss of power to the vehicle (it becomes sluggish when I apply the throttle). Could this be a manufacter defect since it apparently keeps happening to many of our vehicles in the same spot??

Howdy Mr Fearless Mods,, First, I am learning the hard way on my 2009 Acadia, Thanks to you Video I will like take this on myself! Just starting to have Miss fire issues. Previous Fuel Pump nightmare and so on! any way this is a small excerpt from a Blog that I found interesting But it has to do with a Vacuum Line causing the issue but this is not the Tech that mentioned the Issue! I will check them as I go through and see what happens! Why didn't GM steal that 3.6 from the Saturn Vue? way more power and reliable! This seems to be a motor that was between being finished by Saturn for the Out Look when they Bought back Saturn and stole the Whole Line to reinvent and then Go Bankrupt! Oh I hate being poor and having to think! Thanks For your Video and Time Very Much Appreciated Lets think positive easy fix first- Add 1 can/bottle 'SEAFOAM' or "TECHRON" fuel system cleaner. have you checked connector at coil? also the inj connector. being tight, corrosion free? how does plug look? wet, dry, black, tan? /////// Changed coil and plug. I also found that the vacuum line over the top of cylinder 4 was not tight and was probably losing vacuum. I turned it 3 full turns by hand before it started getting tight. Test drive for approx. 25 miles with no misfire, but it has done this before. Thanks again for your help!

Sorry, moved out of the country so I didn't see you had asked a question. Answer is No, no water leaks in the car. It continued running great until I sold it right before we moved (end of June).
@FearlessMods
@FearlessMods 10 жыл бұрын
Often, a water leak in the car can be attributed to the heater core (small radiator-like component that creates your heat when the blower blows thru it). Not having the vehicle anymore, I can't check on it, but usually they're near the passenger footwell. If that's where your leak is, get some on your finger and smell to see if it's antifreeze. If it is, you've got a different job to search for! Good luck!

Any chance I can get the number six coil pack out without taking off the manifold? And or do you think I could just loosen the bolts on the manifold and squeeze the coil pack out? This is the 2nd coil pack that has died in 6 months. Ah GM quality

I would never loosen the manifold without removing it and replacing the gasket. It's just too easy to do it right and avoid introducing further problems.
