Charity shop electrical tester here - we get a LOT of TVs (only outnumbered in donations by lamps). I'd say I have an 80% success rate with them. I do find it's the newer ones that have problems. Had to bin a 41" Sony today as it wouldn't even power up. But a month ago I got a 4:3 Sony from 2007 that works perfectly (though it still hasn't sold, even though I priced it at £15). I think the public would be horrified to learn exactly how many TVs went to the recycling after a small amount of time after manufacture. I can generally coax even old VHS recorders back to life, but TVs? No. What you have is usually what you get.

Put working boards on eBay at a sensible price? No warranty obviously, but there's clearly a UK community that wants random stuff like that. Your dead TV may save others?

Not an edit. Add high Res photos of what you have. Some might be looking and can see the markings on yours when the one they're working on is just a pile of dust. Edit: I've sometimes looked at a burnt mess in front of me and internet photos showed me what should be there.

Great video Allen as always, yes that 2700uf cap in the older vestels was always the culprit, never really got any screen issues at all with them, but samsung now on the other hand the later stuff, your right about the screen issues all started really from the mu series and just got worse, we at work see a lot of 50" samsung with panel failure blank screen but bl lit and rebooting, the 50" seemed a lot worse, weve had 100's of them but nothing we can do, happens loads with 55/65/75 even 43" and the other problem is they will come on perfect for a few minutes then the picture will start twitching vertically like double image every few seconds, but the older vestel was pretty much bullet proof, sort of new what the problem was with the vestel, just from the thumbnail, but take care and keep up the good work

The older ones have an array of analogue inputs which the newer ones often lack - useful things to have around.

I'm always surprised by how many S-Video connectors I see on old TVs. Did anyone actually use S-Video?

I get what you mean about people wanting to keep old and familiar stuff going. Last Sunday I had an older couple come in to the repair cafe with a portable DVD player that no longer works on battery. Sure enough, there was a big puffy lithium battery pack inside. I could only find one on ebay and at £13 its probably not far short of buying a newer DVD model. It's only a Bush/Argos budget thing. However, dementia is a cruel beast. He still knows how to use this system and his wife said she would buy a brand one but it'd confuse him too much. Later that evening I checked ebay again and that battery was sold. I hope it was his wife and I get to see them come in again in a couple of weeks time. A least they won't get a bill, repair cafes are run by volunteers and I really want to fix this for them.

@@georgeprout42 lovely story and I hope you get one. Have you tried AliExpress. They should have it. I love the idea of repair cafes , sadly not one near me. Keep up the good work.

@@allenfleckney5969Cheers Allen. Yeah Ali was the first place I checked, I get at least one delivery a week from them. It's like being a kid at Christmas every time; a stocking full of lots of little individually wrapped presents. I have 4 repair cafes within ~3 miles of me, I have to pick and choose as I can't really do all of them or I'll get home one day to find the locks have been changed.

Update: They came back today and I fitted the replacement battery they'd bought. A few minutes later it was back up and running again. Smiles all around and some tears of joy. This kind of result really makes it all so worthwhile.

I don't need to watch the video to say which one will be in the dumpster. But i will watch it just to find out if i am right Modern TV's are throw away items, just as mobile phones are.

Allen can I ask you just out of curiosity. I've noticed quite often you say it's a screen problem and can't be fixed. Are you genuinely saying it's unfixable or from a business point of view, the labour cost to a customer would be too high?

My 2004 Pioneer 50” HD plasma is still running like it just came out the box. I wouldn’t worry too much. Not 4K but still looks better, to me, than the 2024 models in the shop.
