Once you get your hands on a supercharged 556-horsepower 2009 Cadillac CTS-V, you know that you need a 500-hp 2008 BMW M5 with which to measure it. It's a matter of practical science.
Of course, there's a sizable price difference between the $59,995 CTS-V and the $86,675 M5, and we don't want to get our comparison results skewed by mere money. Maybe we should add the 507-hp 2009 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG to our science project. Trouble is, this Merc's $86,875 price tag still doesn't put the CTS-V under any pressure.
We had a better idea. We opted for the more nimble 2009 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. This compact sedan cranks out only 451 hp, but it weighs almost 400 pounds less than the E63, and its base price of $58,075 rings up about $2,000 cheaper than the CTS-V.
Is the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V a true benchmark in the super sedan category? Measured against the pure performance of the 2008 BMW M5 and the value of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, we knew the truth would come out.

wow...acceleration test, then skidpad, then slalom, then 60-0 braking! Very thorough job edmunds. It's amazing how you read drivers minds. I mean I can't tell you how many times I've encountered a slalom and skidpad setup on public road. I honestly don't know why others within the auto media measure lap times on road courses. What is that crap about? To me a good set of cones on a drag strip is what it's all about when it come to performance driving.

The caddy has over 100BHP more than the C63 and is supercharged...that's not a fair fight is it? At least use the E55 AMG or something.... Although i'd love to see a comparison test between the CTS-V and the new 800BHP Brabus E V12

First of all the CTS-V is in a different class, second Mercedes C 63 AMG doesn't have turbos or supercharges) Also the Mercedes 63 AMG is the strongest V8 ever made!

Every "first drive" video of the C63 that i've seen mentions how communicative, confidence-inspiring, and great the steering and handling of the car is. Infact, in the most recent comparison test against the 2008 BMW M5 & 2009 Cadillac CTS-V, the C63 was rated first in overall driving dynamics, fun-to-drive, handling, and steering performance. So, to describe the handling,"isn't the greatest" wouldn't be the right way to describe it, & even saying it's "good" is definitely an understatement

You know we are biased toward our piece of craps. So get over it. I enjoy my car because it is cheap to maintain runs forever when maintained and runs circles around most cars out there. Mercedes are overpriced and when they break they are expensive to repair. They do break just as much as any other car. I used to work on all makes of cars. So I can speak from experience. Do you even own a Mercedes or are you just dreaming of one for some reason and defending the crap out of them? Just curious.

Mass (kg)- the mass of the car. And the Force (Nm)- the torque of the car. More torque = better acceleration Lower mass (weight) = better acceleration

I was just wondering, but you know, the mercedes c63 amg is lighter about 300-500kg than cls 6,3 and cl 6,3 amg. that's why it's faster. But know the question is, whether c63 is faster going from 100km/h to 200km/h. because when you go on such speeds, it's the question of engine and "horses" that you have. I don't think that the mass of the car is the most important thing in this case. what do you think?

well, when inside line compared those cars, they said they were comparing the best sport sedans out there (i don't know why the m3 wasn't in there), & a large portion of the comparison took place on track. It was commented on rotating its nose towards the apex better than the 2008 M5 or 2009 CTS-V. So this car definitely holds up, on and off the track, but, when its handling is compared to the M3's, that's where the line is drawn. & i would take insideline's word for it before I took Top Gear's

I have to give credit were to the C63-AMG, but then again I can't help but notice that the M5 is bigger and still did nearly as good as the Mec, and the same goes for the CTS-V. This is just me, but I think I would still pay the extra $2k for the CTS-V, but that being said I'm also a huge fan of the tunability and simplicity of the LS series of engines. It would be awsome to see all three of these cars face off at the same track and same time though.

Sorry, but the 63 AMG is the strongest Mercedes has claimed it is the world's most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 engine!!! No GM naturally asoirated engine is stronger then that. Also that 5,4 L engine in SLR GT produces 680 HP and there is no GM Model that can even be close to pure European V8 POWER.

The Mercedes 6.2L engine produces 525HP in SL 63 AMG and CL 63 AMG and is the strongest naturally-aspirated V8 engine known to mankind. WOW 3.8L? lol Remember the BMW M10 1.5L inline-four with 1500 HP from 1986? Or is that too smalll and too powerful for you?

Top Gear. They none of them, including "the stig" could hit the apex with the car. On road it may have good dynamics, and good feel, but when pushed to the limits on a track it doesnt hold up. Obviously not many people will be taking it on a track to test limits, but thats not the point.

@zxcv123123 actually the C63 is in the same car class as the CTS-V, but journalists just compare the CTS-V to the M5 because of its output. A true competitor to the M5 would be a STS-V in terms of car segment

Handles better? On normal road you will never have chance to notice that small difference between those cars, unless you are crazy behind the wheels. In normal daily life the C63 will be much more fun because of its power !

Yes and even so it still got out performed in all those test except for the skid pad (they were identical there). It's still a very badass sedan though.

Ever hear of the current Corvette z06 and the, GM's sister company in down under, the Holden Commodore HSV 427. It has 505 HP naturally aspirated. If you can't beat naturally aspirated, GM made V6 turbos that made way more power than any Euro V8, V12, etc. Buick GNX motors made 1000 horsepower out of a 3.8 liter turbo V6 back in the late 80's. Maybe before your time. Not sure.

car and driver review got the exact same car to do 0-60 in 3.9sec and 1/4 mile in 12 second flat maybe its the Condition, and a better surface, or maybe better drivers somehow... although its an automatic this car is a torque monster nonetheless !!! thumbs up so everybody see the beast numbers in car and driver written review!!

@AZ37DD the E-class and 5-series are mid-size cars. The 7-series and S-class are classifies as LWB. Cadillac designed the CTS to compete in the entry-level luxury segment, and it designed the STS to compete in the luxury mid-size segment. If anyone did a comparison of a v6 CTS, they would not compare it to a six cylinder 5 series, they would compare it to a six cylinder 3-series.

@player1vladimir The 1.5l your speaking of was based on the M10. It put out about 1300hp in qualifying, but ran about 850-900hp most of the time. This is a racecar engine. Its easy to pump out insane hp/l numbers when you have insane amounts of money and the engine only needs to last a few races.
