As a lifelong Vikings fan, I don’t know why I’m rewatching this. Is it masochism? Idk. I distinctly remember this game as I was 19 years old and this was the first Vikings season I truly invested in. I watched EVERY game. Every pass. Every run. Every touchdown. Every emotion. I’ll never forget jumping up and down with my friends as Favre got us in the red zone late in the fourth quarter and hugging each other, shouting, “WE’RE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL! WE’RE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!” Pure elation. Then it happened…. Brett Favre threw across his body over Chester Taylor into the defense’s arms. We watched in horror as we screamed, “NOOOOOO.” You all know how the rest of the game goes. Another typical heartbreak for the Vikings fans. I should know better not to get my hopes up. This was a pivotal moment in my Vikings fandom. Maybe one day, just one day, I’ll be able to witness my beloved team even MAKE it to a Super Bowl. Until then, I will sit and keep my hope in check. The fact that Favre's performance in this game is defined by the INT at the end feels like a travesty, but it's really just the cruel reality of sports. For the first 59 minutes, Favre was the best player on the field fpr either team, and he did it while his teammates fumbled about 482 times & he was taking the most savage/dirty beatdown a QB has endured in modern NFL history. But all anyone remembers is the pick.

Disagree with lots of what you said. The only travesty was the pass interference call in O.T. THAT was B.S. The refs called some late hit calls. He threw (Favre ) two pics, the second one he had a receiver wide open to his right, or he could have ran for 10 yards putting them in field goal range. What 6 fumbles. They beat themselves. Brees got pumbled in the O.T. period as well, That Packers defender DROVE him into the turf and there was no call.

The saints won fair and square on the field, there's no cheating involved there. In the locker rooms, the Saints were dirty and that's a fact, but it isn't cheating. By your definition, any team who intentionally tried to hurt a player in the history of the NFL should have their superbowls taken away or have asterisks by them. The 85 bears had players who wanted to hurt people. The Raiders of the 70s and 80s. Even someone as recent as Hines Ward intentionally blindside blocked players with Helmet hits so they'd be out of the game, they even named the Rule after him. It isn't cheating, it's just being mean. You people need to get over yourselves. I disagree with you, and that pass interference wasn't the only bogus overtime call, but its refreshing to see a Saints fan say something beyond "LOL SALTY, WHODAT" as if they would handle this kind of game with some sort of dignified aplomb. And as a lifelong Vikings fan, I can admit we turned the ball over too many times to expect a win, but sometimes you can turn it over alot and still DESERVE the win, without the Refs having to step in.

@@wyatts7840 You know pre 2010s these hits were pretty much acceptable? Every team hit like this and most flags weren't thrown. It's only when they revised rules a few years later when these were considered dirty hits. 2012 is when Bountygate came out, and up until then, these hits were considered perfectly normal and everyone tends to forget that. This game was considered relatively clean and fine until bountygate came out. Yes there was one High-Low on Favre that should have been called, but it wasn't. Other than that, the game was decently officiated with a few missed calls. Bountygate was a horrible moral issue, but it wasn't cheating and most of these hits were normal in the NFL pre-2010.

One similar hit on Brees or a high/low to return the favor would have sent the message and put a stop to it. Childress should have protected his future HOF QB but he let it all happen. If your pitcher hits a batter in baseball your team gets beaned in the next inning.

This was a great game. Peyton had a fantastic season in 2009 but I remember watching this game and viewing it as the true Super Bowl, whichever team won the NFC Championship was going to be the team to lift the Lombardi trophy, these were the two best teams in the NFL that season. I truly thought the Vikings had it, their offense was pretty close to the Saints as far as scoring and yards accumulated but Minnesota had a much better defense along with the best running back in the NFL. Detailed list of all the late hits (and blateat cheap shots) by New Orleans.. 14:44 (Too loud to see the ref waving the play dead...) 18:36 (McCrey Lowers helmet to hit Favre in Chin) 27:43 (Not penalty worthy, but noticeably late contact into the target areas of Favre (Head/knee) 1:14:50 (Lift and drive, despite what Aikman is saying, clear PF and cheap) 1:17:25 (The infamous high-low, despite no flag, NFL head of Officiating Perreira would later say it was the "poster child" of roughing the QB. Ref had just called PF 2 plays earlier, so he probably swallowed the flag on this one out of fear of influencing the game too much. Terrible.) Bonus list of "interesting" decisions by the Refs 1:02:04 (Probably wouldn't have mattered, but fumbles happen on the goalline.) 1:07:02 (Didn't matter, but obvious hold of the jersey isn't called..) 1:55:45 (Pretty good hold on #59 Heath Farwell, the Vikings best special teamer. Takes him right out of the play on a big return.) 2:03:33 (Ball is clearly fumbled, replay shows possession is regained at the waist of the RB, exactly where he landed, which is the 42 1/2 yard line, with the marker at the 42.. yet somehow Perreira explains that the refs said "No clear visual evidence of where to mark it since he was in the air." ) 2:05:06 (Questionable as to whether it was uncatchable as the TE was falling, but extremely light contact on this PI. Just a weird, bad call to make in a game where they're letting things go, and one that puts NO into FG range.) 2:07:01 (Another "Not enough visual evidence" play where the ball is clearly trapped on the ground.)

1:14:26 funny Aikman was a quarterback and defended this hit. 1:15:51 Aikman says about the Saints player, "He didn't know the ball was out (of Favre's hands)", again, funny Aikman is saying that. Anyone who has played a little playground football knows you CAN feel the ball leave the quarterback's hands, you can sense it in his body, you can feel the release, and if you are driving in low at his legs you can tell by the way his legs stop moving that the ball is gone. The notion that the defender has so much momentum and can't stop... you can stop, it's just been taught in football so long to get that hit in even if you're late getting to the QB. Aikman says that's how they teach pop warner kids to tackle. Something should be changed about the way we're training these kids. They should be teaching these kids when the ball comes out of the QB's hands don't waste your energy tackling the QB, turn around and follow where the ball went. Hey I love football, I love listening to the old football players talk about their time playing the game. Years from now I don't want to hear Brett Favre or Troy Aikman saying "I do have some good, funny, dramatic football stories to tell but I can't remember them now." The game can be softened up quite a bit and still be violent and physical.

On a side note, another Viking named Fran Tarkenton held the passing yards record for I think over 15 years until Dan Marino broke it. Now there are several QBs who have passed them both. It's a different game the last 20 years.
