2009 Subaru Forester Engine Removal (EJ253)

Several months ago, a family friend of mine asked if I could change the engine in their 2009 Subaru Forester with the EJ253 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. Having never taken on an engine replacement before, the task was a bit intimidating, but I was up for the challenge. With some help from Colby, Nathaniel, and Tyler, we were able to swap out the old engine, which purged oil from every seal, for a remanufactured, leak-free block. This is video the first of two, which highlights the removal of the old block.

Thanks for the great video. I have the exact same model and year with 210K on it and am trying to decide what to do with it. Obviously thinking about buying a rebuilt long block. Your videos are very helpful.

I didn't see the engine mounts mentioned hope you got those! On an 1st Gen Outback the hood raises just past vertical so you don't have to remove it to lift engine out.

It all leaks from up top. Oil pressure sensor.
