There are still used performance and luxury car bargains out there that offer a huge amount for the money. Porsches, Bentleys and BMWs that used to cost huge amounts of money but that can now be bought for just a few thousand pounds. The problem is once you buy them the maintenance costs will most probably bankrupt you!

Hi Jack, The Bentley Continental GT is a W12, not a V12. I have had my 2004 car for 15 years. I bought it at 45,000 miles with a full service history when it was 3 years old and have driven it 3,000 miles a year. It has now done 90,000 miles and I do not intend to sell it. I use a Bentley Specialist Garage for servicing and have had everything done as it has been needed so everything works. Most service bills were around £800 to £1,600 but there have also been a few £4,000 bills. That said the total cost of ownership which includes Depreciation, Servicing, Fuel, Tyres, Insurance etc has worked out to be just £95 per week. I think if you can find a good car with service history you are safe. However you must consider even though it is in perfect working order when you buy it the following day something could go wrong and it could cost a few thousand to fix, that doesn't mean you were sold a bad car it is just normal but it is still much less expensive than buying a new mediocre car.

I was invited by Bentley to drive an early GT at Upper Heyford. After getting familiar with the car, I was invited to drive 'spiritedly' at which point the car went into limp mode. I was struck that the warnings on the dashboard were the same as you'd get on a cooking VW! An engine ecu had failed on test.

A mate of mine bought a DB7 Volante a few years ago. Nice car low miles etc. Took it to Aston for a service. Their favourite phrase was ‘we suggest’ or ‘we recommend’. They wanted to change the brake discs and pads for £1000’s … he questioned it and they where only 30% worn. The tyres were Michelin instead of Dunlop… they suggested they be change despite being almost new… He didn’t keep the car long as he drove it in the summer with his roof down taking his mate for a blast. Pulled up at a bus stop and got heckled. They got called a pair of ‘benders’😂😂😂. Sold it and bought a Conti GT. Opened the door on a busy road and a taxi took the door off!! Big cars big bills I’m afraid 🥹

I think you nailed it when you stated that because used ones are relatively inexpensive the second and third owners can’t or won’t pay the maintenance/repair costs so overall condition is a crapshoot. Fun and interesting discussion.

I had a Audi 2007 B7 S4 V8 Avant from 2016-2021 and I think there is a hack to some performance motoring. It wasn't the RS4 so no bespoke suspension and no TFSI V8. It was basically an A4 with some modifications. This meant that although it was thirsty, it was reliable and have a six speed manual. 80% of parts were "normal" A4. It had some exhaust mods so sounded lovely (without being too loud, which meant the V8 rumble could be enjoyed at lower speeds). A 6,900 rpm red line and short gearing meant it made good noises under the limit Servicing was around 400 and realistically needed an oil change every 10k, although you could get away with 15k Then....after about 45,000 (95k-141k) it developed and misfire then started it the next day...and that was it. It was a bad engine design with plastic guides and I knew the faults, but basically any serious work was an engine out job. It died. My mechanic quoted £5-6k realistically and it was basically a new engine required. I sold it to my mechanic for £1k You *can* get 70-80% of the enjoyment of say a higher performance model with just the model down from it - like a 340i to an M3 or a Carrera S to 911T, you get the idea for potentially 30-40% less running cost (fuel aside, dependent on model) The thing is with VAG group high end cars like the Bentley, the same basic infrastructure is on something like an A8 W12 (don't by the way) Great vid. I really reckon a comparison of "nearly" cars would be a good one

Hello Jack. I had an Audi RS6 V10 (2010) and that was a thirsty beast but actually reliable. Potentially could bankrupt you though. All these cars you mention are for wealthy people. The fact that they are cheap now doesn’t mean they are cheap to run. I’d say the Bentley is the worst. I’ve heard of some huge bills. None of them are as bad as Range Rovers. I know three people who had £15-22,000 bills on Range Rovers. Failed engines common place. Lack of maintenance is main reason. People try and run these on a Ford Focus budget. These sorts of vehicles should only be bought if you’ve got a contingency fund of £10-£15,000 to blow on repairs.

Up until a couple of years ago, I worked as a motorfactor. The garage owner of our biggest client bought a Bentley continental. He called me asking to source a set of new wiper blades (just replacement blades, not arms as well). I spent a whole day trying to track any suppliers that sold some that were the correct size and fitment. At the time no one supplied them excent directly from Bentley. If I remember correctly they were about £120. Crazy money!!

My father (a garage owner in the 1960s) used to have a policy of buying old, depreciated luxury cars. the keys to doing so were 1) try to buy cars that had been conscientiously maintained, so the mechanicals work 2) don't worry if some of the toys break. That still works today. In 1985, I had a 1975 Cadillac. When the air-conditioner failed, and would have cost more than the car was worth to maintain, I adopted a seasonal procedure. In spring, bypass the heater matrix. In fall, connect it up and control the cabin temperature with the power windows. Today, fusspot regulations may cause problems with that. The risk with supercars is that they get owned by rich idiots who ignore maintenance or can't afford it when their scams coillapse. (The "big hat, no cattle crowd".)

My contribution is the Maserati Quattroporte 5. I’ve just bought one for £12k. My history file shows a consistent 3k a year to keep on the road. It’s a 2005 duo select and only has 25k miles on it. It’s a cheap way into a Ferrari engined 4 door but I’m under no illusion of the maintenance costs. I’ve just been told a new wheel bearing is £1200 all in… one wheel bearing fitted!

I owned an E60 M5 , it was a dealer demo car with 2,500miles with every conceivable extra. I used it every day for for business for 6 years and did just over 145,000 miles. It averaged 17 miles per gallon driven in manual mode 100% of the time, and apart from the SMG which was a pain in traffic and a few frustrating computer glitches that were normally cleared by a quick stop and restart I had absolutely no issues whatsoever. Eventually the ever rising employee car tax and fuel costs forced me into a dirty diesel 535d and then an X5 hybrid (don't buy one!) but I still miss that V10 and the front end bite on fast corners. Don't listen to the people who have never owned, they are great cars and one day I will by another and get the gear box changed for a manual.

Loved this. The Golden Rule applied here is: ALWAYS, ALWAYS know the risks, do your homework and buy the Very Best Example you can possibly afford. A car that has been maintained, not neglected. NEVER buy a very cheap car on a whim, they are always cheap for very expensive reasons! Find a good specialist (There’s one for any and every ‘special’ car) and discuss preventative maintenance and likely issues. I did this with my 996 (2 owners, 30k miles, FSH, mint when bought) and have budgeted and paid for preventative maintenance - guess what? 2 years and 15k miles later, no horror stories, just pure enjoyment. May sound smug - but I absolutely couldn’t afford an engine change or (£10k+) rebuild, and needed the car to be 100% reliable. Really great vid Jack, loved it.

Very well done on this Jack, brilliant as usual and fair warning to anyone who loves these cars. I ran a BMW M6 a few years ago, kept going into limp mode almost every run, various other issues such as water ingress in boot and front axle snapped part of one of the securing bits causing a noise when moving. Fabulous car to drive and look at, absolutely loved it but cost for the six years I owned it was thousands. Hated to part with it but even at the time my mechanic warned me to let it go. Cost more in six years than my E36 325 cost in twenty years. Keep em coming Jack, the Bentley W12 engine sounds wonderful and was tempted with one of the cheaper ones but was warned off, thankfully.

It's worth noting that these "complex electrical systems" have filtered down to modern mid range cars of today. Manufacturers purposely make it Incredible difficult to repair these larger (sealed etc) units so this type of problem will only increase in future making repairs in general less cost effective.

Hi Jack, As an owner of an M6 (for 3 years) I'm not sure where you did your research on the M5. I get 13mpg if I drive it hard, but over 20mpg is doable if driving sedately. The leather is absolutely not baggy, the Merino leather is good. A well kept one will not bankrupt anyone... Mine is still under BMW warranty at 17 years old. It is not cheap to run and you cannot run it on a shoestring, that would be daft, but they are reliable and well made IF they have been cared for as designed. Loads have sailed past 100k miles and a fair few 200k and are still going strong. Keep up the work on the influenzo though, that is where your channel shines!

I think the sad part particularly with the likes of the BMW, Porsche and Bentley GT, is not just that they are expensive cars to buy (when new) and now to maintain, but the fact they have been built to a budget. Knowing someone well who used to work in the costing area of the car industry, the mark-up on some of this stuff will be ridiculous. The Bentley will be using the same naff quality materials for vacuum pipes etc as much much cheaper cars. The same with the BMW. The reason for the bearing issue is cost-cutting. Premium cars of old weren't immune from this but if you tore down an 80s M series BMW (I had one), you wouldn't see amazing specifications but engineering quality for its time was top draw and proof in the pudding, I ran one up to near 190K miles with an exhaust manifold gasket and water pump being its only crime. Leaving the McLaren & Chiron to one side, the common issue of the rest is a poorly made product. 'Shiny' on the outside but blatant cost-cutting under the skin, which makes them as appealing as a 90's Hyundai as a used prospect.

SMG pumps aren’t an M5 specific issue; happens on plenty of E46 M3’s. The big end bearings issues are because of the crazy thick oil and super tight tolerances are really tight too. When the cars aren’t warmed on properly the bearings wear prematurely. Again, not restricted to the E6x M5; also coo in on the E9x M3 and it affects plenty of S54 powered cars like the Z4M and E46 M3.

I bought a i8 roadster, a future classic since it is a unique peace in BMW history. It was one year old with 1.200km and sold for the half of the sticker price. And - as all BMWs in Switzerland - came with a 10 year or 100k km free-cost service maintenance program. In the first 3 years even brake pads and everything else (without tires) is included. One of the cheapest ways to drive an exotic car.

You have to budget for rod bearings for several NA M cars (S54, S65, S85) and many have already been done. Budget for an SMG pump too and get both of these things done and you'll actually have a pretty reliable car. There is still nothing like the E60 M5 and it's a bargain these days, a must-drive for any petrolhead. Can't speak for the other cars as I don't have any experience with them.

Great video. My friend had three modern BMW's and they were awful money pits. A lot of plastic in the engine bay. BMW = Burn My Wallet. But then again if cars were only about common sense people would just buy old grey Volvo V70's and Toyotas.

I've just bought a Jaguar XJ 3.0ltr supercharged portfolio, it had 16,000 miles on it and was serviced every 2000 miles as well as being garaged all its life. A £74,000 car that I paid £19,000 for. I've done 3000 miles in since I bought it and I put it into my Jag specialist for a gearbox service (it's 10 years old) and it's 2000 mile engine service. I got new wheel nuts for it too, (a must on an XJ) and that came to £926 all in. My philosophy is, if you can't afford to maintain one, don't buy one.

High mileage Cayennes are cheap in Australia but the other 2 are at least double your quoted prices here, my son owns a 2008 M3 with the S65 V8 and its worth approx AU$60,000, rod bearings are a service item on those due to BMW's very small clearances, if I could buy any of the cars you mentioned at anywhere near the UK prices I would buy a Bentley but the cheapest one for sale here is close to AU$90,000.00, an almost new convertible is for sale for AU$600,000.00, on the positive side an AU car won't have any rust.

Hello @Number27, Just found your channel. This was a great video. I have a question regarding the Bentley Segment you did here. Do those issues you pointed out on the GT also apply to the 2010-2012 Bentley Continental Supersports Coupe? As this I think has the same powertrain. Twin Turbo V12 with AWD. Thanks

Hi, I believe later cars had a rerouted vacuum line (after 2007) so that issue would be much easier to solve if it came up. Also as others pointed out the head gaskets are available now through a third party specialist!

Great video. This whole litany of potential problems just illustrates how badly engineered and developed supposedly "quality" makes are. Most of these faults are exacerbated by deliberately designing these heaps to be difficult or impossible to repair, and then charging rip-off spare prices. These companies should not be allowed to trade and rest on their laurels if this is the dire rubbish they produce.

*BENTLEY* I think Tavarish highlighted that the cooling hose that goes through the "V" will eventually need replacing ( as it does on many older BMW's ), and that this is an engine out job. But if you can buy a used one for GBP15k, spend another GBP7k on general maintenance + gearbox vacuum line fix; and then another GBP20k on a new engine + installation, you'd have a lot of newly refreshed car for GBP45k ish

I tend to think this is the reason I enjoy older luxury cars rather more than at least some of their owners. After all, I have the pleasure of admiring them when they drive by or sometimes from the inside, happily thinking that it's without the cost of owning, driving and maintaining. If something sounds too good to be true, like you say with the M5, that's because it is - cliché wisdom, but it always comes true. Off course if you're really into an M5, cayenne or continental GT and have the budget to get them really right when necessary, I can admire you too. But they are cars for rich people, whatever their selling price; the "luxury car for golf-money"-story is an illusion.

great video, one suggestion though..Could you ,when speaking of fuel consumption, also provide them in metric(liters/kilometer)? I think I speak for most continentals when I say miles per gallon means nothing to me.This maybe a sensitive subject,I know Brits somehow want to hang on to Imperial units, but us European folk don't understand them. small gripe but otherwise love your work

Hmm, interesting. It depends what you mean by "quality". Undoubtedly a pair of Church's or Edward Green shoes are fabulous quality - perfect stitching, gorgeous leather, immaculate finish. And so they ought to be at hovering around £1000 a pair. But they will crease across the top, give you blisters when new, stain/fade in the rain/slush/sun - and get ruddy great holes in the soles after a similar amount of pounding the pavements than more ordinary leather footwear. Many people would argue therefore, against such premium makes as being of "superior" quality. By the way, speaking of holes in soles and the repairs thereof, if you send off a pair of Church's to their Northamptonshire factory, admittedly they'll effectively deconstruct it and Goodyear welt the new parts in - as well as any sundries like new insoles, clean and polish and a soft shoebag for them to go in when returned to you, but the price of that - so just in short, new heel and sole - is £290 including VAT but excluding postage - somewhere north of £300 all in, with which amount you could otherwise purchase a brand new pair of still quality kicks. Interestingly, I used to wander round the smarter parts of St James's looking in the good shops' windows - when, in those days (the late 80s), I was supposed to be doing my anatomy dissection or a biochemistry experiment. Suffice to say my interests lay elsewhere and I'm not a doctor although did have a time in pharmaceuticals. Anyway I recall in a distinctly unstudenty way lusting after good shoes. I recall they seemed expensive then, but more in a reassuring way, rather than seemingly outlandish - in a band around £220-£300 - so when I saw some of the models they obviously still make as they're still listed in the 2023 catalogue - I could remember the names like it was yesterday - I couldn't believe my eyes seeing £940 for the Chetwyn Oxford brogues. But then I did some more research and found out that prices have risen from 1989 to 2023, 3.18 times according to various websites, making today's £940 the same as 1989's £295. Even as I write it, I can hardly believe it and possibly you're suffering the same mental block as me😄 It seems almost sacrilegious to say it but, exactly as parodied by Mike Myers' Dr Evel in the Austin Powers movie "One million dollars...m'wah ha ha ha..." doesn't seem a ludicrous amount. I don't know how old you are but I'm not exactly decrepit (in my early fifties) yet getting my head round the notion of the thick end of a grand for a (very) good pair of shoes - despite the fact I proved it to myself that it's more or less entirely in line with inflation - isn't easy. So yup, sometimes what seems wild to some - isn't to others...
