Hi Dave, Very nice video. I have changed out my SS Differential to a ZL1 differential. I'm guessing the rebuild procedure is the same? Do you know if there is a posi unit available for the ZL1 differentials? If so, is there one you suggest over another?
@dazeofgloryshopworks58066 ай бұрын
The procedure is essentially the same. There may be a couple small differences but paying attention to the manufacturer of the gears recommendations will work out just fine. As for a ZL1 upgrade posi, I believe eaton true trac is available for it but I confess it has been a while since I went through the searching on them. Keep me posted on your diff build please! And if I can be of any help, I'll certainly try for you. 🤘🏼

I’ve been in the auto industry for 30 years and have never heard a ring hear called a crown gear, I kept listening and I believe I hear a Canadian accent perhaps, it’s interesting to me how each area or region has their own names for certain things.
@dazeofgloryshopworks58068 ай бұрын
You sir are 100% right. We call em either crown or ring but in school for the mechanic trade it's normally called a crown gear. But yes Canadian all the way. The variance of lingo isn't even just region to region. Mechanic to parts department to engineering and all the terms can be wildly different. Haha gotta love it when everyone is talking the same part with totally different names 😂😂 thanks for checking the video!!

Can’t wait to get mine built for my 2010 2SS coupe…. I think I’m going with a AAM 3.91 full diff build kit. I didn’t know whether to retain the stock Chevy Positrac limited slip, but I do know that I think I wanted something better-performing. I’m essentially going to only be re-using the diff housing/casing; the diff bushings will most likely be replaced as well.

AAM makes a great kit. I would recommend an upgraded posi. Sounds like it's gonna be a sweet build! 🤘🏼

Loved the video. Great step by step. What brand g ear set did you use on this build? How is the differential now that it is installed in your friends vehicle? Thanks.
@dazeofgloryshopworks5806 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! The gear set we used was motive race brand. It's the same quality as Richmond as far as I'm concerned since motive bought out Richmond years ago. The gears are running good. He did develop a slight howl at 80km/hr or 50miles an hour. But he also gave it a couple nitrous blasts soon as the breakin mileage was complete.... so he created the howl. I'd have given it longer and fresh oil before any nitrous hits hahaha. But runs smooth and he is happy.

Super longwinded crown gear install on day 1 (the easy part), I was surprised that you skipped the bearing cup install and pinion bearing polish. Did you have that part done somewhere else?
@dazeofgloryshopworks58068 ай бұрын
So I had to freeze the pinion bearing cups and it was time sensitive once I pulled them from the freezer. Didn't out the camera on for it. Was more worried about getting them in properly. As for the bearing polishing for the slipper bearing, I could have shown my process and probably should have. As this is not the last diff for me to do , I will show that process in the next diff build video. Thanks for checking the video and the feedback on improvements. 🤘🏼

@@dazeofgloryshopworks5806 Starting at 27:34 mark- The pattern is terrible...way to much pinion shim. It's obvious to see with the flat line you have at the root of the gear tooth. You're not even close yet. I noticed the stock diff mount bushings removed, it WILL be a noisy diff with stock diff mount bushings and really loud with aftermarket rigid bushings. Reduce your pinion depth .002-.005, then reset your backlash to spec, then check your paint.

@@jimmyfreeze3782 you're correct on the noise of the driveline transmitting through the car. It's what my customer was going for as he runs the car on nitrous and is no stranger to high rpm launches. The solid mounts help where he wants it to help. 🤘🏼 thanks for checking the video again sir

Great info Dave. Have a 2010 Camaro SS with LS-3. Thinking of switching the 3:45 to 3:91 or even 4:11. Can’t tackle this project I’m thinking but learned a ton sir. How does your friend like the new gears ? I’m not sure if I should look for a diff with the 3:91 already in it- 1 LE have those factory or buy a set of 3:91 I found in my area with 21,000 miles. Thanks again, Mike
@dazeofgloryshopworks580611 ай бұрын
Hey Mike, thanks for the comment. My buddy loves the gears. They fit his driving style perfectly for what he is after. I wouldn't be afraid of running the used 3.91's at all. If you can inspect them and it's good to be able to measure the backlash before they're removed from the housing. But if that's not possible, just have em set up to factory specs and get a good pattern check before using them. Should be just minty for you 🤘🏼

Hi, what would the labor cost be for this job in your area?
@dazeofgloryshopworks58063 ай бұрын
Hi, it's hard to estimate truly, but if the differential is already out and dropped off, the shop would say anywhere from 3-5 hours labour. That's if all goes smoothly. Our labour rates are around $145.00 Canadian $$ and then add shop supplies and tax, between $500 and $800 to do the work.

I always wondered why the bearings are press fit. Even with a 'slip fit' I doubt the race would ever spin after everything is torqued together.👍
@dazeofgloryshopworks58064 ай бұрын
I've rebuilt a pile of diffs from most manufacturers but the ones the races have spun in the case are always the same. Hard abuse, overheat, low fluid levels. You're right I think though. If everything is good when torqued together and the thing is maintained , I wound see any reason for concern at all. 🤘🏼

What do you have for pinion depth I have the same rear end my pattern don't look as good as yours
@dazeofgloryshopworks5806 Жыл бұрын
If you're building stronger, I recommend motive or Richmond gears. And the posi I used was a eaton tru-trac I believe. Very strong. As for the rest, he did get aftermarket axles and urethane bushings for the diff mounts and control arms.

I missed the pinion depth part. My mistake. I was at work and glanced instead of reading. My apologies. I lucked out with using the factory pinion shim that's was in the old gear set. When you have to select different shims, always change it by 5 thou thicker and then thinner and run your patterns each time. That'll tell you which direction you need to go.

@dazeofgloryshopworks5806 Жыл бұрын
Truth be told, I don't know if I measured the original shim when I pulled it out. When building diffs for a living, you got used to just swapping the original shim to the new gear set and starting there. What is the build on your diff? Gear ratio change? Brand gears and posi? Can you email me a picture of your current pattern? (dartdave408@gmail.com) Also, did your posi fail or is this strictly upgrade?
