2010 Impala 9C1 - Swapping the steering wheel (for one with audio controls)

The steering wheel is the main and primary interface with the vehicle. If it’s torn, ripped and nasty; it definitely colors your experience while driving the vehicle. Just did this myself, brand new steering wheel/leather wrapped was 500.00. Found a very lightly used leather wrapped steering wheel with the extra controls for 111.00. Installed it using this video as a rough guide. Worked like a charm. A lot Easier than I thought. Thanks!

🔥🔥🔥Also helpful tip- if air bag light comes on after everything put back together- disconnect battery again and pull just air bag- make sure both air bag power clips are seated all the way into the air bag and you literally hear a click noise. After I did this air bag light went away!!!

glad i re found this video I have an 09 LS and recently got in a fender bender and I got a fender from a guy on face book market place and I asked him about the wheel and he gave me a similar price he even threw in the matching leather shift knob. the only thing was his was a 12 that had the manual shift option (they are 2 extra buttons on the left pod) my car does not have that feature so before I installed the wheel based on your info I removed the left pod from my old crusty wheel and put that one on it. future tip for those who do this swap it is recommended that not only do you remove the battery cable it is best to pull the airbag fuse it is in the fuse block under the hood near the battery other than that it is just as you said TCC.

TIP- 🔥🔥🔥Do not use a steering wheel puller the grey pot metal cracks easy- work the steering wheel out with your hands and arms by pulling it off!!!!

Thanks so much for this video!!! I just finished this project on my 2012. No problem at all!! Funny note... the main nut on mine was no where near as tight as yours... I put a hell of a lot more force than necessary and sent the ratchet flying when the nut spun loose!

Ring seats? Not sure what part you mean. I took the nut off, swapped wheels, and put the nut back on, it was pretty painless. I'm still using that junkyard steering wheel to this day

Yep, it's one of those handy features you don't really use, unless you have it on the car. But once you have it, you get use to it and enjoy having it.

The video is 2 years old now but I just found my 2012 9C1 and my steering wheel is in worse shape than yours with about 1/4" deep wear on the top ( I think whoever was driving it rubbed the palm of their hand on the top of the wheel constantly. Nice to know now how to change it out. Also nice to know that the wiring harness for the radio controls is in there.

Once the airbag is disconnected it shouldnt go off. But also don't put it face down bc if it dies for whatever reason go off it'll launch itself with a good amount of force

Loosen the steering wheel locknut but don't remove it until wheel seperates from column. Then the steering wheel wont come flying at you when pulling.

Did this today. I used the Ford radio removal tool to poke into the hole. Worked real good. Much easier removing these then a Crown Vic steering wheel.

first of all, great video dude. this was an amazing help. secondly, interesting tidbit… i did a steering wheel swap today on my 2013 9C1 to one off a 2013 LT. i didn’t notice until after i was done, but it looks like i’ve lost my two up shift and downshift buttons on the left side, while gaining audio controls. guess the only real use for the L gear w/ up shift and downshift would be maybe for use in snowy weather. not a big deal but just an interesting note. i have my 1st gear in L mode, but i can’t manually shift up or down anymore.

Make sure all connectors are plugged up correctly, try disconnecting and reconnecting your negative terminals, maybe switch the known working paddles off your old wheel onto the new one?

A dealer probably would have charged you $2,000 for the steering wheel and then charged you 2 hours labor to install it. Oh, and there probably would have been another fee related to some fictitious programming on the radio to make the buttons work.

I'm ready to SCREAM at GM... I have a Buick Lucerne, but same setup... The steering wheel is supposed to have two threaded holes for putting a steering wheel puller. They didn't thread the holes on these!!!!! Makes it a LOT easier to remove. You can make a puller, rent one, or buy it for a few bucks at harbor freight. Most all vehicles have those threaded holes to hook it up with but NOT GM now. YUCK. I'm also VERY scared of airbags. I disconnected battery AND pulled airbag fuse. Regardless I'm SUPER careful about where I point the airbag and hold tools while I'm disconnecting the connectors as well. Great video, I'd not have figured it out as this newer design is a big quirkier than the older.

I changed my airbag/audio control harness to include the right audio controls that added to my 08 3.9l impala to program a new aftermarket radio. I installed it but now just like you I have the light on. I checked the passenger side sensor wasn't that. I'd really appreciate any advice on this matter please and thank you

I used just a regular small Phillips screwdriver it’s hard to find the correct spot you have to keep trying - eventually mine popped out fine.

The old steering wheel was a plastic material that was shredding, with no audio controls (shown at 0:26). The replacement steering wheel is leather and has audio controls (shown at 19:09).
