so she going to need 10 mm pliers a Phillips screwdriver and 30min or less.
drain coolant safe manners. remover the hole camp and hose.
remover three 10mm(only) bolt and slide the thermostat out.
same way you toke the old one out replace it same way and important part fill and run car to get all the air bubble out. is you don't do this car will o er heat and damage the new part. when your cooking fan turn in and you don't see no more bubble you good make sure you run the heater also when doing this step.

Why replace the thermostat anyway? Mechanic couldn't give me a reason.

Do t know why they didn't have you a reason. But here why if you over heated of it never been changed in the last five year. Why you there if important to do so.. but some shop will do this as a mark up. If none from above the reuse it. Just under $10.00. the labor shouldn't be there if you doing alt. Because you have to remover this part. Any professional tech can answer your question on demand. There lot of shady shop today and many just want to get over on people too.
