Instead of running a wire up to the battery, would it be advisable to splice into the circuit powering that 12V accessory plug in the trunk?

That sounds pretty advisable to me.

@@timkrouse345 This is not advisable. Many circuits wired in this way fail. For safety purposes, trailer lights require direct connection to a vehicle's battery.

Ignore the guy that says thats not safe, its basically a 12v supply from the battery just wires are ran for you already
