That bolt for the Steering Knuckle (M12 x 1.5 x 80mm) is not reusable according to Volkswagen . It does have specific torque + another 90 or 180 degree(don't know exactly) so it is stretched and may fail if you use it second time . Same thing with the axle bolt . I'll be buying those and try to do the job without disconnecting the axle.

The two bolts and two nuts cost me $19 CND at the dealer.
@TheRwdyAudi
@TheRwdyAudi 2 жыл бұрын
@@r.t.7925 Thats cheap around 28 $us I think. my usual rule of thumb with stretch to torque to yield is if its steel and not in the engine it probably okay to reuse ... now i can say from experience your okay reusing your axle bolts lol done it many times with no problems and i beat the snot out them lol
@hardcore4476

The dealer reuses everything unless the bolt looks damaged. A guy at Volkswagen dealership told me that and couldn’t believe it! I agree if it’s something like flywheel or motor mounts or something really important use new!

You're right. He's supposed to torque it to 148 ft-lbs off the ground, plus 180 degrees with the car on the ground. This guy simply just went full send on it with an 1,000 ft-lb impact wrench because he's too lazy to use a torque wrench.

I'm watching this instead of going outside to do it. Seems there are a few different ways of doing it. Using a spreader tool to open the knuckle while smacking it and just loosening the top three bolts in the tower and just swinging the hub assembly out of the way. I'm too lazy to take that whole thing off. OK more videos to watch.

Also some guys have used a 2x4 or metal bar to hold the strut in place so you can whack on the spindle and separate it. Placing the bar against the nut brace.

did you need to get aligning after replacing the struts?
@TheRwdyAudi

Yes you will need to get an alignment afterwards. The design of these struts directly affects your alignment. That said you can get it pretty close if you mark/index everything ahead of time. This customer happen to have e a lifetime alignment at firestone.

Hi I have a 14 jetta and the Monroe struts won’t slide in the whole where it stays, I tried to open the whole even more and won’t fit. Do I have to hammer it in and force it on?
@TheRwdyAudi
@TheRwdyAudi 3 жыл бұрын
Great question and thanks for asking it. short anwer is no you shouldn't need to apply a lot of force a little hammering is okay but they should drop in. try to cleaning the bore up and verify you have the correct part number and part sometimes stuff get missed box . Also using alittle lube or even anti seize can and will help out with fitment

I had this same exact issue on my 2013 Jetta S- turns out that most cars take a 55mm wide strut assembly, but VW also made a variant for certain trims and models that call for the 50mm one instead. After hours and hours of fighting it to go in, I realized I had been sent a 55mm strut housing and needed to return it and find and install a 50mm one.

I would take issue with the axle bolt. I tried to get it off a Jeep Liberty for a bearing replacement and ended up having to pull the whole left axle out and replacing because it wouldn’t budge. Honestly I’d think moving the caliper was a solid idea but I’d be more inclined to fiddle and hammer at the sleeve the lower strut is piped into. I’ve never had one not give eventually but it also reduces removing all those extra pieces. Just ordered the kit for my GLI so I appreciate the vid 👍🏻 but I may use some different methods. Also my bigger issue is removing my alternator pulley as it just won’t budge and VW gives no room to work. How hard is it to pull the alternator?
@TheRwdyAudi
@TheRwdyAudi 4 жыл бұрын
Pulling the alternator isnt awful very very do able. By the way I was checking out your channel you got some really awesome looking stuff I'm have to check it out. I don't think an alternator job is gonna be very difficult 😎

@@TheRwdyAudi good to know, seems straight forward but I did my serpentine pulley (just the pulley) and still have a stupid whine/chirping. Just can’t get any leverage or proper placement because they shoehorned it in leaving no space. My wife’s 3.7L Liberty is like cake to work on, thanks for the props, maybe I’ll vid the alternator job too.

My top spline has to be a 7mm. The 8mm is too big. The 6mm first, but as soon as I apply pressure it spins. Has anyone else had their’s be a 7mm? I’ll comment again once it comes in the mail for me to try the 7.

Thanks for the feed back.... I've been tossing the idea around of doing voice overs in separate uploads with the lapse camera ...lol "youtube gurus " say it good idea ... personally I think we all learn differently so the more ways something is made available the better.

@@TheRwdyAudi The KZbin gurus are wrong. Instructional videos should never be put at super speed, it completely defeats the purpose.
@TheRwdyAudi
@TheRwdyAudi 2 жыл бұрын
That's a fair statement as I'm doing more of these I'll be very real I see higher retention when I don't incorporate the "lapse" section of the upload(especially with diy)that said I still hold firm to the ideals that we all different and each learn and comprehend in different manners. So to completely remove "lapse" style content from the channel would essentially alienate all of those who are looking for that style upload to get them through "X" job. What I will consider is separating the two forms of content, in the macro of it I'm all ready filming the work and it not much more time to create 2 separate pieces of content. Thank for your thoughts, the feed back means alot to me. An allows me to better cater to my viewers.👊😎
