I have a sienna and I’ve always been reluctant to have people in the third row: the rear of the rear axle is very soft. You can see here the rear seats pushed forward and up violently. The van barely moves forward, instead, the rear crumbles. And that’s without luggage behind. The seats move forward, but not the seat belt attachments: people would be crushed by the seat belts as well.
@notmyfaultthisishappening37953 жыл бұрын
I would treat it as an extremely safe 4 or 5 seater. The crumpling of the back of the van will probably save your necks in a crash.

They kinda did, but the law of physics requires a crumble zone to dissipate the force. As you can see, the collision produced not much impact to the second and first row passengers. The third row is just too far back and there isn’t enough distance behind the 3rd row and the rear end.

Well, I was in a 2016 Sienna LE that was rear-ended at 45-50mph by a Hyundai Elantra, and I was seated in the third row. I was completely fine, no immediate injuries. The only issues from that accident are that my neck and back growth need to be monitored because of possible whiplash damage, which put me at greater risk for scoliosis or something. The car even managed to make it home, and it survived the accident and we kept it for another two years until the lease went up in 2019. Just saying, no matter what car you drive, you can still get hurt or killed in a crash. And all cars involved in a wreck will look bad, but just because they look bad doesn’t mean that the people inside are hurt.

there is absolutely no way to tell... the 3rd row definitely got messed up but thats mostly trunk damage... these vans have massive trunks, anyone who hasn't owned one has no idea... its a bigger crumple zone than the front end probably. people get rear ended all the time and people buy vans to use a 3rd row generally, if they were death traps we would know by now.

@FirstLast-kb7kn6 жыл бұрын
Why not evaluate both? There isn't a test in the U.S. for occupant protection in high-speed rear-end collisions (at least not one that the majority of people know about). The IIHS evaluates seat designs, but that is for lower speed collision (about 20 mi/h). This is a realistic situation if you're on the highway and (for example) the engine stalls. Although it is likely to be more severe because you are more likely to get hit by a larger heavier vehicle than a passenger car.

@@d_dawg05 Offset rear collisions are actually far more common than full-on rear collisions because the rear driver most often attempts to swerve too late. Nannestadboy There was a deadly accident in my local town in 2010 involving a semi truck ramming a minivan on the exit ramp of the freeway. The driver of the minivan suffered serious injury, and all of her children were obliterated. While 50 mph is fast, it is still not uncommon for a collision like this to occur.
@teammbopro28974 жыл бұрын
mato filaro My point of this comment was to say that high speed collisions are more common than one may think. Though, I believe most new cars and trucks with large enough spaces between the back of the car and the occupant space would allow the occupants to survive. One of the major reasons why those children died was due to the third seats being so close to the car’s rear. Edit: To your point, the chances of survival in a major semi collision are not high. I doubt someone would survive any collusion over 70 mph, though semi-trucks usually max out as 65 mph and most drivers are not that ignorant to be going over 55 or 60. And to respond to your question, there are very few high speed, rear end crash tests out there, so I can’t name many cars that would hold up, though, again, a larger car where the occupants are far away from the rear would improve survival chances considerably. For example, the front seat passenger was the survivor of the 2010 accident; she was the farthest away from the back of the minivan. I am treating you with as much respect as I can, so could you just respect my beliefs a little, even if you believe it’s BS?

So no they are not and have NEVER been a company concerned with the safety of their clients. They were also one of the only makers that ONLY put in side curtain airbags after (and only until) the government regulated it. (In Canada it was to expensive to add airbags, even though they were standard in the USA...) Toyota has had more safety recalls than any other automotive manufacturer in history.
