My grandfather was part of the old knothole gang. We loved listening to and watching the Cardinals together. He was in real bad heath in 2011. I kept him up to date as best I could to his understanding. He passed in July. And we somehow won it all that year. I bought the championship dvd they came out with after that. It's still in it's original wrapping never opened up. Just could never do it. I felt they won for him even though I know that's not a reality. So basically I'm going to enjoy this because I rarely visit that year and the memories. Will never open or watch that DVD but it will never leave me either.

My family has roots from Southern Illinois and later the St. Louis region, which is why when I was introduced to the game of baseball, I was introduced to the Cardinals. As I grew up and my interests in sports wavered between baseball and other sports, I've come to realize that the St. Louis ballclub would be my favorite regardless. They are the second most successful franchise in MLB history, and the way they have achieved that is far different from the rest. When you look at all the successful eras of the franchise, there is a standout group of owners/managers and players where the personalities of these guys are seemingly larger than life. There is just a different ethos to this team and I'm 100% behind it.

Don’t count on it. There are only about 3 position players on this team that could start for the 2011 team. As far as the pitching staff is concerned, the number 3 starter on the 2011 team would be the ace of this year’s team, and the only guy in this year’s bullpen that would have a spot in the 2011 bullpen is Helsley. The 2011 team also had Tony LaRussa as manager. Comparing LaRussa to Marmol is like comparing Muhammad Ali to Tex Cobb.

The movie that came with the DVD set was a better production I think, with more from each team, but this was good also. Game 6 was the most exciting game in my lifetime. I saw Hank hit number 715, saw all the homers in 98, seen so many huge sports moments in my lifetime, but the Freese triple in the 9th was spectacular, Berkman's hit to tie, then the Freese homer in the 11th... legendary! One of my best friend's wife's son went to Rice and played on the same college team with LB. So awesome to see Berkman get his ring after all these years, and it wasn't a free ride for him, he really earned it. Game 6 was a microcosm of the Cardinal's season. What an unbelievable year.

I am very sorry to hear that you lost your grandpa. I've lost my grandparents, and I know how much that hurts. However, I can assure you that your grandpa had absolutely nothing to do with the Cardinals winning the World Series in 2011. That's legitimate nonsense. How many fans of the Braves, Phillies, Brewers, and Rangers lost loved ones around the same time? How many of them would have assigned that team winning to their lost loved ones? Rather than make yourself feel better about the loss of your grandfather by assigning him some (false) post-mortem magical power to influence the outcomes of baseball games, why not just remember what he actually was, and what he actually did? Again, I am truly sorry for your loss. However, that level of ridiculous thinking is not only factually wrong, but potentially dangerous, especially for those that are hurting and looking for something to grasp onto.
@TheEricHart Жыл бұрын
@@cardinalsbaseballclassics Hey man, I can believe what I want. My grandpa and I grew up bonding over the Cardinals and this is what I choose to believe. Obviously it's not likely, but it's how I like to think and how I was thinking when I was watching it happen live during the hardest time of my life. Cardinals played a great season they deserve a lot of credit for making it happen, but us fans and true believers in higher power also have some part as well. Even told David Freese the story once and he thought it was cool and he said there was something magical going on in that dugout. Thanks for the videos, I'm surprised you talk to your supporters this way.
@cardinalsbaseballclassics Жыл бұрын
@@TheEricHart I'm very sensitive to what I would gently term "flim-flam" being shared on here. One person might read that, and dilute themselves into thinking something harmful, dangerous, or just flat out wrong is real. I'm not interested in what makes people feel warm and fuzzy; I'm much more concerned with reality. I do not believe in anything supernatural, or any sort of higher power. If you do, I can't stop you, but I am not, nor do I care to be, convinced of things for which there is no solid evidence. My Grandma was a lover of butterflies, specifically Monarchs. The day she died, her sister was on a walk in the woods, passed by a big patch of milkweed, and saw dozens of Monarchs take off in flight. She says that at that moment, she knew her sister was dead. That's a load of bunk. The Monarchs were there because they love milkweed, and her presence scared them off. It would have happened were it the day before, or the day after. There was nothing supernatural about it. Ascribing some sort of power to someone that is dead requires an awful lot of evidence for it to be taken seriously, or at least it should. People use these types of things, as you described, as a coping mechanism. While I understand that, this is not a religious channel. This is a baseball channel. I don't want that kind of stuff on here. I do not believe that ridiculous beliefs should be respected just because someone holds them sincerely. I respect you, but not your belief. If you're going to post something that preposterous online, be prepared to get called out on it. I have enough respect for you to tell you that I am positive you are wrong, but that I am very sorry for the loss of your grandfather. There are healthier ways to gain closure than by assigning him post-mortem supernatural influence over sporting events.

Having watched every game of the 2011 season, and every game thus far of the 2021 season, they are completely different animals. The 2011 team underperformed in the first half, and, oh yeah, had a Hall of Famer Manager, First Baseman, and Catcher, as well as All-Stars in Right Field, Left Field, Third Base, Shortstop, and a Cy Young winner the Rotation. The 2021 Cardinals are about what I thought they'd be - a team with subpar offense, mediocre pitching, and virtually no depth. They're a slightly above .500 team at best. There is no way in hell they make the playoffs, much less win the World Series. In fact, I feel so confident in that assessment that if the 2021 Cardinals win the World Series, I'll buy you an authentic jersey of the player of your choice.
