This is only a temp fix, as the AMD GPU itself is defective and this fix usually doesn't last very long. You should also shield components around the GPU with at least aluminum foil, or better option would be HVAC metal tape which is thicker. Your best fix is to disable the AMD GPU at the firmware level ( DosDude1 ) which will force the machine to use onboard intel graphics.

What a good idea. Basically turning it into a giant heatsink that would be able to contain and dissipate all the heat coming from the AMD GPU, which clearly can’t handle it. I’m going to try this.

@Covist Great video! 👏 Some food for thought, you might want to mention the use of liquid flux, the use of aluminum foil to deflect heat from other components on the logic board, the temp of the reflow gun, ie. ~ 225 - 235F to remelt the solder joints for the GPU, the time you keep the GPU and remelting temp, and a link to a tear down, ie. a link to the ifixit tear down. Otherwise, the video was put together very well and to the point. Thanks for sharing. cheers 🍻 Chris

With the understanding that this is a temporary solution, can / should one do this over and over again? Or does this process have detrimental effects over time and eventually will kill the gpu and / or other components around it making the computer totally irreparable?
@Covist
@Covist 6 жыл бұрын
I don't have a large sample size nor have I done this many times, so I can't say for sure. But I think it'd be safe to assume that eventually it would die one way or another. In fact, just the problem showing up in the first place, before applying this "fix", already shows that its failing, so it's just a matter of time until its fully dead.

Worked 50% for me and I wonder if it’s because I used a blow dryer rather than a heat gun. What I mean by the 50% is that for the past year it was a black screen not even wavy lines. I applied new thermal paste, used a blow dryer on the gpu as I didn’t have a heat gun and I’m back to the boot screen with Apple logo with wavy lines and obviously does not boot fully. So I’m 50% there with some action happening and no longer a black screen. Should I try it again with a heat gun if so can I leave the heat sink on and use the heat gun or should I remove, clean paste, use heat gun and reapply paste?

That’s great but a lot of us have the same issue as him, my late 2011 15” wouldn’t boot (blurry screen, black screen and shut down before it would fully boot) so I had no way of getting into the system to disable the GPU and delete the library files until I did this procedure. This procedure worked like a charm, it was able to boot and then I disabled the GPU and deleted the files. Now it works like a charm.

@Covist
@Covist 6 жыл бұрын
It'll depend on your heat gun, but I had it heating it for maybe somewhere between 5-10min. Honestly though, it's not a huge deal if you didn't heat enough, cause you can just do it again and heat it longer. Also, on the backside of the GPU, there are two pins that hold the board off the back casing. Be careful about those, cause if you heat it too hot, they may come off.

Hello Man, thanks for video - it is rather interesting for me as 1. Have the 2011 one, which still consider as the best construction wise (Unibody) - it allows me unlimited SSD upgrade, what for my musical hobby and even the business a bit is quite principle issue as the musical libraries are damn big for usual architecture of the modern lines of Macbook Pro. 2. The GPU after 10 years of functioning as it expected to has died has and by recommendation of local Apple Service was cut off as it was found that for my requirements to Graphic like Chrome, KZbin and GUI of musical programs the other one of CPU is more than enough so I shouldn't cry a lot of loosing that dead one. But having in mind to enhance my activity a bit - thinking to buy some more 2012 ones, having the same constructional failure as the 2011 one, but also the same required feature of Disk upgrade. Therefore like herewith to ask your opinion should I buy those ones mid 2012 ? For how long, on your professional opinion, those, announced by seller as perfectly tested and working, will function well until its GPU problem will remind me about itself ?

Because you didn't reflow anything. The solder isn't actually at fault here. What's failing is the bond between the gpu silicone and it's PCB (not motherboard) and that melts much easier than solder. You hit it with higher temps and most likely it will melt again and stop working

@Covist
@Covist 6 жыл бұрын
It can be very daunting for an amateur and it'll depend on if your naturally good or not at these types of things. So I guess it comes down to how much importance is it to you to get it working again. If it's very important, then I would suggest finding someone experienced to do it just to maximize your chances for revival. But if it's not important, then sure why not? It'll be a good learning experience, and plus if it's already not working, the worst outcome is that it stays nonfunctional. Not like you can really any less functional lol

It's not B.S.. People keep doing it because it works. Not can you show any evidence otherwise (and yes, I am including that Louis Rossmann vide, where he incorrectly speculates about the chip internals from logically fallacious arguments, and misstatements of fact. But I guess it makes you feel smart to be the lone voice. In fact, the cause of failure is well known, and is due to the poor chip design of the AMD GPU used in these machines as well as the inadequate air circulation, causing heat buildup that the lead free solder is inadequate to withstand without failure. Contrary to Rossmann's claims, the fallacy of his theory is shown by the fact that, while the 2010s and 2011 soon fail again after this repair (due to the exact same issues) the 2012, which has the EXACT same solder, and almost the exact same logic board, does NOT suffer from this issue (because in 2012 Apple switched from the AMD GPU to the NVIDIA). Try thinking for yourself, from facts and evidence, not from what other people tell out on the internets.

I'm an old timer in terms of electronics. The abnormal thing about re-flowing a chip is that its not proper. When a component fails it's replaced. Logic chips do not normally fail, failure is because of defect in design, manufacturing or improper application. IMO logic chips such as the CPU and the GPU fail because they run too hot. In other words they were meant to fail and obviously the makers know it.

Exactly. I was telling my girlfriend that for example Sony electronics from the 60’s,70’s and 80’s are so durable and lost a long time because back then companies weren’t thinking about planned obsolescence, they were built to last. Now they’re built to break for people to upgrade and spend more money. I used to have an old Apple IIGS, a Mac LC 575, a G4 MDD and until is old then all a few years ago they all worked perfectly.

It will fail again as it is not a permanent fix. Dead GPU is a dead gpu. I solved this by a long term fix provided below. It is not easy however it definitely works. It works because it deactivates AMD GPU and always routes signals from iGPU to display. There is soldering involved which is very difficult for average user. forums.macrumors.com/threads/permanently-disable-2011-15-17-macbook-pro-dedicated-gpu-gmux-ic-bypass.2134019/

Sorry, this is not recommended, the GPU problem on this machines aren't the balls (BGA), the actual AMD CHIP is defected, this chips have a connection between the silicon and the GPU plate and then below that we have the actual balls that technicians re-flow or reballing.. the truth is that re-flow or reballing the same GPU chip is not fix the issue, this AMD GPUs are bad, they are defected from the manufacture, if you put heat on your board you will make the problem worst, and permanent break your device, but if you instead take this machine to a technician that will REPLACE the ACTUAL chip, or disable the dedicated graphics, you will fix the device. Because as i say, this chips are broken from the manufacture, heat wont solve the problem! Is better disable the dedicated GPU, because even if you find a NEW GPU CHIP this is most like are BAD to.. PLEAS STOP MAKING VIDEOS BURNING BOARDS.. for more info i recommend watch the video "kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3LGdqdmbJiImtU&t="

Thanks for the info, but why isn't anybody else here pist off at Apple for this? Am I the only one thinking, wait a minute, I payed top dollar for a machine which had a design/hardware flaw which now gives me stress, destroyed my initial investment and gives me a lot of extra work now that I need to get all the information off the SSD and HD? Way to go Apple, that surely legitimize their prices. "claps sarcastically"

Tech visit is not inexpensive. Anything free that extends the life of the machine is worthwhile. Mid 2011 iMac has same AMD GPU issue. I have successfully baked five AMD cards and all of them came back to life. All of mine are still going. To be fair, some users report still going strong after several years, others report dead in a few months. I have a dead Late 2011 17 inch with GPU failure that will get this treatment soon. This isn’t a fix. The problem is that the gpu has failed an by heating it you are temporarily reforming the silicon in the chip. This is because it has suffered heat damage. The solution is to replace the chip. This method you show is only a temporary solution good for recovering data off of a dead device only.

Would be great to add, heat gun proximity, timing and or temperature goal for the chip heating step. I've seen oven versions of this fix and I've also seen heat guns burn things really quickly. It would be great if Apple or an investigative journalist made a video explaining the failure why it happened and what they did about it. I get it that they needed to draw the line somewhere with warranty but for known issues why didn't they recall and get the chip supplier or board assembly company to claim against their insurance? This failure really tarnishes Apples reputation and is added to the horrendous fail in the launch of maps, the IOS update iPhone 6 battery issues..
@Covist

This video wasn't meant to be a step by step guide, but you are correct, I would need to include those if it was. As for the issue, Apple actually determined it was a design flaw and they extended the warranty for the affect MacBooks. But that extended warranty has since ended. So that's why I went and opened it up and tried to fix it myself.

This isnt a fix. Please stop spreading misinformation. This is a bandaid on a broken leg. The GPU is the issues and your hot air gun didnt even reflow the solder under the chip if you had the edge bonding wouldnt have allowed the chip to settle so any broken joint (even though these solder joints arent the issue) would not reflow properly. Also Solder to wet and make a solid connection requires flux. You added none. What you did do is head the epoxy underfill around the GPU Die. This heating causes the epoxy to flex and expand which allows the microscopic solder bumps on the underside of the die to touch their respective pad.

My only suggestion is to build your own goddamn computer, without all of that GPU & heating problems crap! I get it, Foxconn or Catcher Technology, which is headquartered in Taiwan, but does its manufacturing in mainland China, that assemble MacBook pro's, makes shitty computers! All macs, are not even American made! They are made in china and other domesticated countries. So with this understanding, through research, it is better to learn how to build your own, because what is being put in your computer and on your logic board or motherboard, to make it overheat in the first place, from poor ventilation, built by cheap builders and designers, that get their parts to build the computer, from all kinds of different parts companies, that give the building companies, used and refurbished parts, that are not built properly in the first place? So the good news is, F%#* apple! This is a big scandalous ass company! They do not care about you as an individual buying their products and devices! Even with apple care! Research shows from reviews, better known as apple community, and costumers who are apple fans, that when a problem occurs with their devices, repairs are to expensive, and apple has been caught scamming customers, right here on KZbin! It's all about scamming people, to make more, and more, and more, money, by people being suckers, for their products and devices! Because people love social media, more then themselves, to a certain degree! I was a fool as well, until I found this research out! I am happy I brought cheap budget macs off of eBAY, because I found out that even new updated macs, are having tons of issues and OS X update failures, and causing problems with the logic board, because of once again, cheap parts designed on the computer, by designers and geeks in other countries and states, who are underpaid and treated unfairly, if the rush of the designs and creations are not met with rules and regulations, by these companies that they work hard for! What a goddamn shame! Once again, F##*% apple and their cheap a$$ products and devices! Build and make your own! Cheers!
