2011 Pacific Typhoon Season Animation

This is an animation of the 2011 Pacific typhoon season. It was a below average season that featured 27 tropical cyclones, 21 of which were named by the JMA. It produced 3 C5 super typhoons, however all peaking with 160 mph (260 km/h) maximum sustained winds. It featured one of the deadliest Filipino storms ever, with Washi causing more than 1,000 deaths.

Typhoons Mina (Nanmadol), Pedring (Nesat), and Quiel (Nalgae) are both Category 3 typhoons which battered Luzon with maximum winds of 120 mph (195 km/h). They are both tied with Hurricane Irene which hit Bahamas. Tropical Storm Sendong (Washi) is a weak but deadly tropical storm that caused massive flash floods in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, killing 1,080 people.

1. Nanmadol (Mina) is the strongest and costliest storm of the season, packing 10-minute sustained winds of 120 mph (195 km/h) before making landfall in Northern Cagayan. 2. Nesat (Pedring) and Nalgae (Quiel) are two major Category 3 storms that battered Luzon with winds of 120 mph (195 km/h). 3. Washi (Sendong) is the deadliest storm of the season, killing over 1,450 people from flash floods in Northern Mindanao, especially in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.
