Toyota has a special service campaign on this air injection pump for 2012 Tacomas. Supposed to replace for free, but this is a great idea to avoid the hassle of the dealership

My 2012 just hit 100,000 so I’m checking everything for preventative maintenance. The old filter actually looked brand new. No wear and tear, no dirt or bugs. I changed it thinking that maybe it looked so clean because it wasn’t filtering anything.

I passed smog, but my registration in California just got blocked for this recall. Good thing I'm taking care of this early in the month.

Keep old parts in truck in California, won't pass smog without it. I put tool and part in zip lock under back seat

That's what I do too, though TX is way more relaxed. I keep old parts for warranty purposes though

This is a mod everyone can do. Even with little to no experience the average person can do it. Help save yourself $$$ with a $13 dollar filter. Great little video to help Taco owners save their engines! 👍🏼

Completely agree with you. Ive seen people post about this mod on Facebook's Toyota Tacoma Enthusiast page and alot of people think its pointless and stupid. I completely disagree with them. Thanks for watching :)

Five Foot I see people wasting money left and right on pointless mods. It’s their truck, they can do what they want with it. I think it makes more sense to spend $13 bucks and save a thousand down the road. My ‘12 had 70k on it when I did the mod and the OG filter was dry and super brittle. I’m so glad I found out about this before the thing came apart and ruined perfectly good parts. Cheers!

Pretty sure this fan is making a high-pitch squeal while I'm driving, then slows down and eventually stops when I stop. Really annoying. I'm going to try this mod and see if it helps free-up some flow. Thanks!

It can't be this pump. This pump only turns on when you start the truck, will run for about 30 seconds, and shutdown the rest of your trip. Its got to be something else. Maybe a bearing going out? wheel bearing, carrier bearing, or something stuck on the brakes like a small rock?

Question...Should the pump run constantly or at more of a pulse?

The pump should only run at start-up for a few seconds when the engine is cold. Once the engine reaches operating temps, and the cats are nice and toasty warm, the pump will not run, or it shouldnt run, if it does, then something is wrong. I've came across some comments where the pump will turn on as soon as you turn off the engine; though my truck has never done this.

It adds air to the exhaust, to my knowledge mostly during startup to add oxygen for catalytic warmup.

My truck, sadly, threw out the infamous P2441 code... I've cleared the code and she is running fine. Im waiting for P2440 and P2442 so I can take in to the Stealership for repairs. 7/23/2018

Today, my 2012 Toyota Tacoma had the engine light and Track off lights on. I went into KZbin and checked the gas cap but the lights still stayed on. I went to Autozone and they did a diagnostic on the engine light and it came back P2442 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve Stuck. I'm suppose to go to the dealership tomorrow.

Have no clue. It’s weird. And I think newer year Tacomas don’t have it either. Some older Tacoma have also. But idk man.

So you remove the foam I’m assuming and the new filter does the rest? What if you already had it pop a check eng and Tach off light?

Yes, got rid of the foam inside the pump housing and the installed the filter breather so it catches the big particles. If the CEL is on, if you know the CEL code is for the Secondary Air Injection System, take your truck to your local dealership, they will cover the fix under warranty.

Thanks. Called Toyota customer service. They gave me a # and set me up for an appointment for warranty service. As for the pump I took the screw out and the top would not come off. I didn’t want to break it trying since it’s under warranty.

The top is just hard to pop off but it will not break. I was afraid too but a little tug and it came out. Glad yours is getting fixed. How many miles? My 2012 has 94k miles and haven't had issues with the pump yet.

Ok I tried again and got it off. The sponge is intact so that’s a relief. Must just be the valve. I blew in that hose and it did appear to let the air go through which it’s not supposed to do. It popped the P2442 code

It doesnt get wet, unless you drive without an engine hood. I've driven hours through thunderstorms and the pump and engine bay is as dry as the Sahara Desert.

Dustin R that goes over the pump? I visited an oliendo Toyota part store. Type Toyota parts on google and you'll see several Toyota parts store links come up. From there just navigate through their options until you can find the cover. At $45 just for the cover, it's not worth it lol I tried eBay but didn't find it.
