They aren't that bad actually. They werent track grade cars at all (unless it's an ACR), and there was a meeting in Champaign Illinois where I live. There must have been over 30 Vipers there, and at least 5 were ACR's. The ones that hold one of the fastest Nurburgring times for a production road car ever. They sound great, even though I didn't get them taking off on film. I did sit and drive one, but I only got the sitting part on film because it would be dangerous to drive and film at once.

@deKubber I don't know what tires it was on, but I doubt they were P Zeros...the one thing we've always had trouble with is front-end heavy cars with massive understeer, you can see that in the video. The interiors? They've got us there, but some of the new Caddy's are coming along. Spyker, Koenigsegg, etc. don't have great interiors but utilitarian interiors, they work.

The "truck engine of old" was only related to the prototypes of the first 8.0L V10 found in the 1st and 2nd generation Vipers. The 8.4L was an all new engine developed by the then new SRT team. This new V10 had no Fiat/Ferrari help considering it's just a more efficient version of the same engine in the previous generation Viper SRT/10 ACR. Also, there's plenty of cars that are still built here by American manufacturers. Mustang? Corvette? Caravan? 200C? Viper? Fusion? Fiesta? Focus?

I'm not exactly sure why Cosworth is worth mentioning. It's a London based engine maker at its core. The Ford GT40 was engineered by Lola, also English, and its signature look is an Italian Pininfarina design. It was a truly global effort...just like most modern production cars are now.

well if that is your logic then you should exclude the ACR for having add on aerodynamic components that is not road legal the D8 RS should be pulled as well and the ZR1 time should be pulled for having super slick tiers (because if its cold and wet its like trying to drive on butter) the apollo should be pulled.. and all of them should be put on the racing list?

I'm confused. aren't you comparing an actual race car to sport-passenger cars? I mean the sr8 isn't a consumer car. Its not practical for anything other than a racetrack. Second thing that confuses me is the tires are legal are they not? thats what DOT means right, Department of Transportation approved??

The ACR was bone stock, street legal and I was actually wrong about the Vipers 7:12, it actually has a 7:03, but I'm happy you're going to enjoy that LS3 Camaro!

the ACR viper is an impressive car but its over 100k and the Radical SR8 (the fastest production car to go around the ring) is about 80k..... and the tires fitted to the ACR, ZO6, ZR1 and ZL1 are not legal world wide (same tires fitted to a 911 GT2 shaved over 14sec off)

no... there are not many corners at the Ring were AWD or RWD give you a big traction advantage... most likely it would be slower because of the added weight.

and what's the camaro ZL1's time/general performance specs? then compare to Aventador (shown in this video), and the 911 GT2 and GT3... heck, just a Turbo S. amuse me... i just want to know when this car is actually better than the flagships this host claims it hangs with. remember, 2-3 seconds is forgivable due to many variables, 10+ is pretty much out of class league, 20+ and it might as well be a minivan racing a porsche.

right, but even the more extreme sports and super cars have SOME level of practicality. the sr8 is production by technicality, but it's a flat out race car. For example. there are street legal Nascars that you can buy for around 50,000. But does that mean that you can really compare one to a sporty consumer car around that same price? i don't think you can really pit them against each other for a comparison. So you should exclude the sr8 from that list and compare it to other lamans race cars.

We'll see about that. So far none of those can even hang with the last generation Viper ACR on the ring. The new Viper TA is quicker than the old ACR around Laguna Seca and the NEW ACR is still yet to come :)

the Gumpert Apollo wasnt even trying ..race driver who did the laptime with the Gumpert claimed with some suspension adjustments (stock fully adjustable suspension from factory) the Apollo can easy go under 7min on road tires.. The ACR laptime to be honest was driven with not street legal aerodynamic parts.. which are even in the USA not street legal.. not to talk about Radical SR3-8 dont get me wrong I am German and ordered me a Camaro 45th Anniversary Edition LS3 stick :)

So 991 Carrera S 7:39 400hp Camaro ZL1 7:31 580hp yes, the ZL1 is fast for it's price, but is it a good car? 50% more HP and still slower? Not really impressive (but on the other side ... it's the performance / feature combo that matters, and at 1/2 the price ... I can see how it appeals). ZL1 : 19mpg 911 : 27mpg US still don't care about fuel economy ... hence they go high power, low mpg.

07:41 - Not a bad lap time at all…! Hitting 171 mph as he passes under the Adenauer bridge on the straight is right up there. I don't think my 2000 Camaro SS would have done quite so well.

i hate to remind you, but the Camaro is built strictly in Canada. to be close minded about vehicles in regards to where they're from is absolutely silly. I drive a 2011 Ford Edge SEL AWD (made in canada), my wife has a 2008 Nissan Altima 3.5SE (made in america). when we got them, i researched price, reliability, practicality, fun, and looks. we ended up with them out of a fist full of cars and dealerships looking to meet my needs. had nothing to do with brand or country of origin.

a few things wrong with your statement the shelby cobra is the british built AC Cobra, C4 corvettes were helped out by lotus, the 2000 GTO's were australian made monaros built in the 90's and the Ford GT is european with an american engine and since 2005 LS series engines are made in australia the LS9 was modeled off the LS3 S/C by walkinsaw performance

1. The Camaro isn't a Holden product. Only the chassis is a Holden product. The Zeta platform was developed by Holden. Everything else was developed here in the good ole USA. 2. The new Viper isn't a Fiat product. Just because Fiat bought out Chrysler, doesn't necessarily mean they build Chrysler products now. There is no Ferrari "DNA" in the new Viper. They might have consulted with Ferrari engineers on the chassis tuning (since it's the same chassis from before), but there's no Ferrari DNA.

Go see the Car and Driver 2013 lightning lap results. The little Camaro SS 1LE beat the new BMW M5 and M6 around VIR and ran the same lap time as the C63 AMG Black Series. There's also a test where the little Chevy Sonic runs a quicker time though the cones than the new FRS/BRZ. GM knows how to do suspensions, hell, they LICENSED the magnetic suspension thats in the ZL1/ZR1 to Ferrari.

I'm missing something. The 911 GT2 did it in 7:33. The GT-R 7:29. The Lamborghini dit it in 7:40, but that was in 2007. This is faster than the 7:41 the ZL1 managed. The ZR1 did it in 7:19 in 2011 though.

7:41 is a great lap time for the camaro and yes it is a lot cheaper than a ferrari, but ferrari is not only a car, its about the heritage of the brand the prestige and many other things american brands will never comprehend. By the way the 458 Italia did a lap time of 7:28, and if you see the specs its about 18 hp less than the ZL1 but still faster, so dont ever think about being compared to those supercar makes. Ferrari and Lamborghini are way up high than Ford or Chevrolet period.

They use the same materials, but the reason the Viper will never be as good as the Corvette now, is because Fiat owns Chrysler. Since Ferrari is the super car performance brand for that company, the CEO will never let Viper surpass the latest Ferrari in terms of performance, its strictly limited now. Corvette will always be on top in performance however.

GM is really turning out some impressive vehicles now. The new Stingray looks magical, the ZL1 is an engineering marvel, the older ZR1 is insanely good. Not one of their vehicles now would I give bad rep, except for maybe the Malibu, the back is butt ugly.

But it's simply my experience: American cars are simple and reliable (1 exception I do have to make though...) German cars are far more refined and therefore less reliable. They have to stuff an aweful load of tech-gimmicks in it to justify the price...

And still the GT-R is 20 grand more. If it comes to power per buck ratio, just about nothing beats a Vette or the new Viper. I'd like to see the new SRT or ACR go up against a GT-R. And the GT-R was a whole model year newer, remember that. It can make all the difference. They are still fast as hell, but the old Skylines were the best.

this car sells for 54grand. meaning you get a car that will not only beat all of those cars i said on a track, but with only minor mods will beat them in a drag race (if it doesn't already) and can hit 200mph for only 16 grand more. So in simple terms for about 75 grand you get a 2012 car that can hit 200mph, dominate a track, rule a dragstrip and seat 4 comfortably. Now show me Any Porsche, Lambo, Merc, Audi, or BMW that you can say the same thing about

Next gen Mustang- IRS (they've had 'em before, 2003-2004 Cobras) svelte lines, even more brakes (and the present Mustang still cuts good track and brake numbers, many folks have commented on how good a job Ford did); Camaro- actually a Holden product, but is a subsidiary of GM. New Viper? FIAT product w/ alot of Ferrari DNA and American V-10. New Corvette?...it'll be a notch up from today's offering. Welcome to the "Global" economy!

There sure are- Subaru, BMW, Mercedes, Hyundai/KIA, Nissan, VW /Audis now. But like "American" cars, the parts come from all over. My wife's DD Buick has parts from 7 countries, assembled in Oshawa, Ontario. BMW's euro-built cars w/auto trannies come from GM/Hydra-matic in Strasbourg, France. A lot of things are still assembled here in the US, but there is truly no "All-American" built cars anymore. We can argue back and forth on minute points, but what the hell is a 'domestic' these days?
