Great Vid! I have the same MacBook and would definitely recommend these upgrades. One suggestion I'd make, which may suit some people is to get rid of the dvd drive. Stick the 500gb hard drive in its place for storing large files on (iTunes, Photos etc) and get a smaller 128gb or 256gb SSD to run the OS. You can easily get a USB caddy for the dvd drive if you still require one.

Enjoyed the video. Really like to see when people are able to still put older macs to good use, even today. My main computer is a late 2015 27" iMac with 32 GB Ram, and a skyLake quad core 3.3 ghz i5. and 2 GB of dedicated graphics. Personally I'm not a fan of adobe software, but have Final cut pro X. Based on your test, it looks like this mac will have even more performance for a long time. I also tend to run Virtual machines to run additional operating systems, and having the extra RM makes that nice. I also have a 2 TB Fusion drive, but have considered an external SSD down the road for faster storage. have a great day!

Apple yas slowly become the company I love to hate. Why solder the dam RAM to the board?
@MarkSpurrell6 жыл бұрын
If I were to guess, it's to stop consumers from buying their low-end models and doing a cheaper DIY upgrade themselves. If the RAM is soldered to the board, it becomes much harder to upgrade and therefore consumers are forced to pay Apple more money for their more high-end systems. It's shady at best, but it seems to be working for them (as much as I hate it).

badgernikes exactly the reason why I don’t buy new model. It is a way to max its own company’s profit. Like I use kingstone ram in this, which comes with life time gurantee, but in later models if ur ram dies, you need to replace the whole logic board.

ill point this out you dont do 4k editing unless you have a 4K monitor runing in 4k other wise you can properly edit your files the macbook pro on an external display maxes out at 1080p tops interal of course is far less resulotion i have a mid 2012 macbook pro my self also been an apple computer user sence 1981 and also apple certified tech sence 1990 , the 2012 does a great job once upgraded to the max ram and SSD for 720 and 1080 and lower res stuff but once you start pushing it beyond that range well keep doing it over and over and youll fry that poor laptop video editing is very hard on any computer so you need the right compuer for the job and this one well 1080p like i said is its max abilitys with out causing problems .
@samuelholmes12285 жыл бұрын
You should try replacing the optical drive with a drive caddy and put a second ssd in its place and then make both ssd's in a raid 0 it would give it even faster performance by cutting the data transfer speed in half then you might find that it will do an exceptional job editing the video's and give you twice as much storage capacity. After all no one really uses optical drives any more and if you need to you could get a portable usb 3.0 optical drive.

Good video. Either way, the way to work 4k in any non-linear editor, would be through proxies. By not handling the material natively, the performance is even higher. Everything has to do with the budget, I would not buy a new MBP today. Because, to the contrary that before, today there are other options. The unbody trashed the MBP.
@MarkSpurrell6 жыл бұрын

Hi Mark thanks for such an informative video it really helped but however i have a question if you could help i have a Macbook pro mid 12, 2.9 Ghz core I7, 8GB and i also have bought a new action camera DJI Cosmo action, Final cut pro says compatibility macOS 10.14.6 or later but mine is 10.11.6 does that mean my macbook would be too old to edit videos on the final cut pro? Would i need a newer laptop or should i use a different video editing software? Many Thanks

I am currently looking at a mid-2012 MPB upgraded with 2 250gb SSD drives, 16GB Ram, and an intel i7 2.3 Quad Core for 850 Canadian. That seems to be a decent price in my neck of the woods. I am looking to use it for music production, mostly Native Instruments Maschine and Massive, and Ableton Live 9. Is this a good deal?

Silly question but what about temperature while rendering? I do have a 2012 15' MacBook Pro and I have some issues rendering/exporting 4k footage as the GPU and the CPU escalates till 95ºC (203º F) and I don't feel comfortable with my Mac peaking that temperature. Is it safe anyway?

I NEEDED THIS VIDEO. I'm on a Mid-2012 13 inch i7 with 8GB RAM. Video editing is the only thing I struggle with. I've been debating whether to upgrade or buy a new MBP and give in to that #donglelife. After seeing this, I'm probably gonna upgrade to keep my ports BUT... how does your upgraded laptop handle 1080p & 4k in Resolve? If I have to upgrade the SSD & Ram & buy FCPX that's the price of a new Windows ultraportable. Hence my back & forth-ing.

Glad it helped! Playback in Resolve is sometimes difficult at 4k. Lots of stuttering. Less so at 1080p, but then again, I have the i5, not the i7, so your experience may vary slightly. To be totally honest, if you have the financial means to buy the new MBP, do it. This video are for those people who don't have that buying power and only want to spend a little bit of money to get better performance out of what they already have. Dongles are a real bummer, but to be honest, I have a feeling they're going to be less of a problem in the near future. There are a lot of monitors coming out now with USB-C ports that can transfer data AND charge the laptop at the same time, so a dongle won't even be necessary if you're at your desk at home.
