I don’t understand why some techs insist on resurfacing perfectly good rotors that weren’t causing any problems!
@Charlie_Crown2 жыл бұрын
If I'm doing the brakes on my car, myself, and if there's a lip on the rotor, but the rest is smooth, like no groves, then i'll carry on using that rotor, as is, no problem. But Peter here is clearly a perfectionist, and he's got the machine ready to go, so absolutely no harm smoothing off that lip, nice clean job, I like the attention to detail. But if I get someone to do the job instead, and there's a significant cost to getting that done, and it's only a lip, but no groves, then I tell that tech to just put on the brake pads, make sure everything is freed up and lubricated, and that will be it. But it's far worse when they try sell you new rotors, possibly inferior ones, just because of a non interfering little lip, as I personally wouldn't be against a resurface, depending on cost and necessity, in that instance, so i'd find that to be the preferable option 👍

Great video and it's refreshing to see a mechanic take such pride in his job and work ethic. I wish there were more like you over here in Australia.

I love your intro sentence. " Hello friends and welcome to Toyota maintenance KZbin channnnnnel".....lol. You seem like the friendliest man on the planet. Hello from Calgary Canada.

I bought some inexpensive rotors online and they have been golden. Smooth as silk. Lasted three years and counting and brake better with the ceramic brake pads.

The same. The reason for me to buy aftermarket is because some shops charge more for resurfacing then what I buy a new good quality rotor for. Also, rotors get thinner and for us, backyard mechanics, how do I know when it's too thin? I only have good experience with aftermarket parts and Toyota, I think, used Raybestos anyway or not?
@TomasCirip9 ай бұрын
Also, one more point. For mechanics - they have a machine maybe it makes sense to resurface, I don't have one at home.

A 100k vehicle and you don't need to beat the rotor off? I do live in the rust belt...sucks to be us!

You will never get this thorough of a brake job at a Midas or Pep Boys. To those guys time is money so it is sell & install new (in many cases cheap Chinese aftermarket) rotors, slap in new pads (again, cheap made in China ones) and you're done. So very important to pull those slide pins and re-lube but many shops rarely do it.

I heard that in an effort to reduce weight for better fuel efficiency, the rotors today aren't make of the same materials as in the past. Lighter metals so it can't be resurfaced. I had pulsating brakes in the front and had it resurfaced only to have the same problem 1 year later. Not worth the money IMHO. I ended up going aftermarket with new pads and rotor. Haven't had the same problem for a long time. I will be replacing the rear brakes soon so I will do the same, go aftermarket and replace the rotors as well. And I didn't go for a no-name aftermarket part, I got a Bosch Quietcast.

When I was a teenager, before the public knew the danger of asbestos, they used to blow away the brake dust on the backing plate and the attached brake parts with compressed air at 175 pounds per square inch pressure, in tire and auto repair shops. Luckily, where I worked in the summer, they never did many brake jobs. And I would do my best to avoid any dust clouds when they did. And, for the record, the producers of asbestos knew it caused cancer way back in the 1930's. They are still paying people today, not because asbestos was dangerous and potentially harmful, but because they knew it was, but failed to warn consumers of the danger to their health. The legal doctrine which made them liable is known as 'failure to warn'. (I read the case summary.) That is one reason why you see so many warning labels and warning illustrations on things today. They don't want to get sued and lose for 'failure to warn'.
Great video. You mentioned "YOUR" new brake bedding procedure on test drive. Please explain, how you do it! Thanks!!
@joeteich72372 жыл бұрын
If using same brand pads, do NOT turn rotor if ok. Proven that pad material is in rotor, and helps new pad to bed in and helps braking function.

Slider pins have rubber ring on them inside especially thr lower one. You need to use special grease for slider pins. Glycol soap based Niglube RM by Nippon grease
@jamram99242 жыл бұрын
I don’t know of any shop that uses Glycol based grease. I’ve used silicone paste for years with great success. It has a 2000-2500 degree operating temperature. Some shops do replace the brake hardware that come with many aftermarket pads to include Akebeno pads, which Ove used for years. Peter appears to have done a great job inspecting it and able to reuse it.

peter peter peter, good video, thank you for that.

It is dependent on how long time the resurfacing needs. Compare that time to the price of new rotors and you’ll be able to evaluate what is more beneficial for you and the customer. In Sweden they don’t (in general) resurface rotors at all. The labor cost is higher than new rotors and the customer will have fresh brakes that will last.

I worked on a Toyota 4 Runner rear 06 brakes and rotors the lug nuts broke one on each side they just had tires put on don't no where I used torque wrench just snaped was there any problems with those on that year it was my bosses I told him the other stop probly cross threaded them they where hard coming off threads where messed up he didn't seem to trust me been working on cars for 35 years just wondering if there was something with that year or you think the other shop didn't torque them right they where tight coming of if you reply back I'll show this to him I did hundreds and hundreds for rear brakes first time I had this much trouble with 2 lug nuts on a easy brake job other than people really stripping them out they look good at first came off very hard I'm always careful with somones else's car.

So only one fast cut on the rotor?? Just by the way it sounds i can tell by the end that rotor was making so much noise, and any tech knows those clamps really suck they can come off at any time , they never stay in place
@dadgarage79662 жыл бұрын
Good you could pull off the rotor without busting the parking brake shoe hold down pins.

Can you damage ABS by compressing the caliper piston?
@LAactor2 жыл бұрын
I don't claim to be an expert like that ride person in the comments said of everyone here. Maybe he doesn't understand some techs like watching try different ways there are to do things and take tips to improve. For example I like taking off the brake hardware and changing it altogether. Then I take the bracket where it lives and clean that area well and then brake grease that area before putting the hardware clips back in to prevent disc squeals. Then paint the circle head of where the piston contacts the pad as well as the ears on the other side. I also like to open the bleeder when I compress the piston so I can flush out all that heat cycled and piston/rubber seal contaminated old brake fluid out. Can't do that in rust states or you break it off but I don't want a comeback if they have old rubber lines and rubber gets pushed back into the master cylinder seals going the wrong way. Other than that, perfect about the anti-sneeze jk seize on the hub face. Always likes to get stuck. And I leave off the rubber adjustment cover until after the parking brake is adjusted. Other than that, it's exactly how I would have done it! Minus the grease on the ears. It should slide fine on the slippery stainless surface. And I feel like a car wash would just wash it away. Or if it's never washed with string jets, acts like a dirt magnet. Great advice about pumping the brakes. Everyone says it but so many forget to. I make a good habit to know where the emergency brake is just in case I'm extra tired one day.

should we clean and lubricate the piston boot as well ?
@davidg57042 жыл бұрын
Imo I clean piston boot before compressing piston. Use same synthetic grease around rubber seal. I also coat inside piston because in salted areas the piston can become pitted and corroded.
@davidg57042 жыл бұрын
I also remove master cylinder cover so pressure doesn't cause issues with fluid overflow.

Very interesting perspective we don't get to see every day if not working in a shop. With the Sienna in the air it looks like an oversized Matrix. Or one of the new #CorollaCross vehicles. Basically same principles, Corolla Hatch or even mini RAV. Cant call the CH-R a mini RAV or Corolla Hatch. It's a strange cousin in its own way

Maybe adoption. Like the new Supra is German genes.

These rotors are too thin to begin with. I had 2012. Every 5 years I replace pad and rotors. Rotors are not they expensive even the OEM.
