Such a precise and beautiful lecture on what happened by Sheikh Yasir Qadhi. I also had the same question as the brother who asked, "Why did Rasulullah (saw) even inquired about A'ishah's (r.a.) innocence in private?" Even though he (saw) defended her publicly. I heard a lecture from a women scholar (sister Taimiyyah from al-Huda Foundation) which made perfect sense to me. It was because Rasulullah (saw) did not just play the part of a husband, but he (saw) was also the head of state and the judiciary, the legislature etc. If someone has been accused of adulty, even if it was from his (saw) own household, he (saw) has to be able to be fair to verify. Hence a simple verification from her as a testament to that slander would suffice. But A'ishah of course is his (saw) wife. What a complicated situation to be in. Your husband is not just someone you love dearly, but always holds the hat of a judiciary, where he (saw) has to be fair even within his (saw) household. This clearly shows the amazing character of our prophet Muhammad (saw) as a husband, as a head of state, as a judiciary, as the legislature etc. He (saw) was in the truest sense, the perfect example of all.

"أَرْبَعٌ فِي أُمَّتِي مِنْ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ لا يَتْرُكُونَهُنَّ: الْفَخْرُ فِي الأَحْسَابِ، وَالطَّعْنُ فِي الأَنْسَابِ، وَالاسْتِسْقَاءُ بِالنُّجُومِ، وَالنِّيَاحَةُ" Four this will stay in my umma: Proudness in tribalism Genealogy doubting Astrology Whailing over the dead.
