I have owned a 911, a boxster, and now drive a 2011 Cayman S and I can't find a reason to ever drive a different car. I'm 70 years old and have owned most of the sports cars I dreamed about when I was younger. The Cayman has all the boxes checked and, as far as I'm concerned, my search for the perfect sports car has ended.

So great to hear this - and I 100% agree. I've had a couple of Boxsters - 3 911s from a 993 which I really loved. But I'm on my 3rd Cayman now - 6 speed manual , 2016, 981 - and it's just about the perfect car.

I'm going on 8 years of owning a 2014 cayman s...it's still hard for me to "upgrade" to a 911....but when I get the itch...I drive my cayman and say....what for? This is the BEST car I've ever had!

A rare manual! I have a PDK and, although it's technically excellent, I'm bored to tears and craving having a manual Porsche again (with Sports Exhaust, obviously).

You missed the sports exaust. It really makes the driving experience even better. With a shorter gear ratio, like a 911, it would be even faster. Give it the same engine as the carreraS, and i think it would outperform it. Its just a better sportscar due to its mid engine configuration. I also love the 911, dont get me wrong. But perhps now more a GT car, a great one. This cayman 981 is just a masterpiece!

I never had test car without it. Still, for the same money that you have to pay for the Burmester system you can get the Bose system and the PSE sport exhaust. Great review - sent to me by a friend who wanted to reinforce my own purchase decision. A year ago, I pulled most of my hair out trying to decide between a very heavily discounted brand new 2012 911 GTS (MSRP $119,000; price $85,000), a heavily discounted brand new 2012 base 991 Carrera (MSRP $96,000; price $80,000) and waiting for the new 2014 Cayman S. I chose the last, placed my custom order in January, 2013 and waited not-so-patiently for the car to arrive in May,2013. Now, with 6 months and nearly 7,000 miles under my belt, VERY happy with my decision. The "deal" doesn't look as good on paper - MSRP on Cayman S was $78,935 with a modest 5% discount to $75,000, but the driving enjoyment is a significant notch up from my previous 2005 911S Cab, which I drove "only" 30,000 miles in 5+ years. Had I not already owned a 997, the 2012 911 GTS would have likely been my choice. But the new mid engine, lighter weight and tighter handling Cayman S is such a joy to drive, that I'm not missing the extra power of the GTS or the extra size of the 991. It fits me like a glove and engages me like no other car I've owned. White, PASM, Sport Chrono, Infotainment, 20" Carrera S wheels, Adaptive sport seats, 6-speed manual. Check in with me at 10 years and 120k miles, I'll still be smiling. Great reviews and I'll be forwarding your site to other friends that will greatly appreciate your insights. Best regards.

(No, not teaching her on Cayman, rather my Acura TL 6-speed). Unfortunately, we are both still stalling out too much. Regarding your dream car, recently met an owner of a 2012 GT3 with 4,000 miles who was trading it in at my dealership to order a 2014 Cayman S. He never made it to the track and he claimed driving the car on the traffic clogged roads around Washington DC was "too punishing" with it's super tight suspension and heavyweight clutch. I'll take a shot of the Cayman tomorrow with my i-phone if you can tell me what to do from there.

I don't know if it's different for Europe but here in America they have high end Burmester sound systems as an optional upgrade in certain Mercedes models. I worked at a Mercedes dealer and am therefore a fan so that's why I even make a clarification...that and because their sound is amazing. I drove a 2015 S550 with the high end Burmester 3d surround sound upgrade and I had never heard anything close to it before! Also, I do realize this video wasn't made in 2015 but rather 2013. As an awesome side note: I just rented a Cayman S for a day when I went on vacation and it was nothing short of mind blowing and incredible in every way. Everything said in this video is absolutely spot on. I too did not have the optional sport exhaust but still laughed every time I floored it. Muscle cars (whether German or American etc) are great fun but I enjoy cars that make me smile not just from power or sound, though the Cayman has both in crazy doses, but also from the sheer astonishment that occurs while getting to know just how capable this car is in the turns. With one full throttle pop in automatic and sport mode...and at 70 mph on the freeway...it went from 6th gear to 2nd gear without ever touching a paddle! I only just got into cars a year ago and so don't have years of driving experience but this was so easy to drift and not worry about losing control. My dream car right now is a 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS (still deciding on options and colors). It was insane fun without Lamborghini-like scary and offers everything I personally would ever want out of a sports car....and for around 80 grand!

Great video and very thorough and unbiased review...from someone who admits their true enthusiasm for the 911 too so that much was both surprising and also very welcome. I do agree with your final conclusions that the 981 does now give drivers an option or shall I saw a moment of pause between a base 991 and a Cayman S especially. In addition with the changes between the 997 and 991 in terms of technology, driving dynamics, ergonomics, and price...there are some who would actually chose the 981 instead. I must say I am one of them...currently have 2009 997 C4S and have ordered a 2014 Cayman S (PSE, PASM, 6spd, Bose, Sport seat) and drove a PDK version at the dealership. IMHO the Cayman S in its new generation is much more fun to enjoy than my 997 C4S..at least here in the states where we don't have an autobahn to enjoy. Versus a 991 I think it still can hold its own and it then becomes a personal choice as to what the driver/owner is looking for. Size and power/performance vs a more driver focused nible car that you can push both yourself and the car in more normal driving experiences that are more prevalent here in the US. The 981 overall is a very well put together piece of machinery and its new dynamics combined with its new styling just sold the deal for me. I've had 4 911's (996, 997.1, 997.2 S and 997.2 C4S) along with a Cayenne S and Boxster 987.2 so I know my Porsches but would be interesting in your analysis or thoughts of my conclusions and 997 vs Cayman comparison. The 911 will always be the king...but the new Cayman/Boxster's well...maybe we're seeing a new prince to the thrown evolve. Great reviews my friend keep up the good work! :) Auf Wiedersehen

Hi Guido. Congratulations on another thoughtful, informative review. Yours are some of the finest on the internet. I love the 911 but also think the Cayman is very impressive. I'm glad you chose the manual transmission car, as I would. It's a shame that so few people opt for the manual or even know how to drive one these days. The 981s are certainly better driver's car to me, but my problem is that i don't get to drive as much without rear seats ... but the 991 isn't so perfect for its price tag to me. Once again, an excellent review, Guido. You really should have your own television show. I haven't driven the new Cayman S, but you"re probably right that its layout is so well suited for its engine that it offers a better driving experience than a base 911. Yet, the 911 is just so much more of a car than the Cayman. The 911 is, as you've mentioned, a more mature car, a more desirable car. Put those two cars side by side, and the 911 -- even the base one -- will stand out.

Hi had the 997s gen 2 with pdk for a year when I took my 911 for service the gave me a 2014 Cayman s with pdk for a day . God it was so good I just couldn't BELIVE that after driving the 911 for a year and the Cayman for A day it felt much better to me handling grip and the sound that it delivers Intoxicating !! The interior colour is called agate grey / amber orange...So it's not a camera effect.. I started reviewing cars for american friends. I personally don't watch german car shows, only american or english ones. So it feels very natural to me and there aren't any germans that I know of, that have the same feedback that I get...My accent is pretty strong, but I don't force anybody to watch my videos...Hope that answers your questions ;)

Pierre, I'm well known for being a 911-fan, so I personally would always have a 911 instead of any other sportscar. My personal favourite is still the 997.2 GT3. Drove one this year and made a short video. This car will be one of the last sportscars purely focused on driving, real driving for me: Having a manual, the gloroius 3.8 liter engine, best suspension and steering in the world...I doubt the new GT3 with PDK will be as satiesfying to drive on public roads for me. Very nice review!! I did not know that that kind of electronic existed associated to manual gearboxes for the less experienced drivers that can't heel and toe. We've already spoke about this and you know my opinion regarding manual gears...manual is the way to go!

Love your review. I am in love with the new Cayman. I recently got a F30 335i. If listened to my heart, I would have spent the extra money on the Cayman.
