My questions at the end, about why running a ground wire back to the PCM: 1. For input circuits, this helps clean up the signals, I understand that. But this is an output where this type of accuracy isn't necessary. 2. It is an un-switched constant ground on the computer board, but I've never attempted to test one of these circuits with the key off! 3. As many stated in part one, there may be despiking diodes involved for this design. 4. I've seen power side switched outputs that are grounded externally, so what it the difference? If we need diode suppression as the reason, how are these designs done? 5. I understand that it could be a monitored circuit, for current flow. Thanks everyone!! Final thoughts, tread carefully with Flagship1
@michaelsparmann3368
@michaelsparmann3368 3 жыл бұрын
This is most likely for 2 reasons: - Flyback protection diodes as you already mentioned (because this is a highly inductive load) - Reduced electromagnetic emissions from the harness, and especially from these specific wires to others running in parallel, by getting ripple current in both directions to cancel out. If this wasn't done, you could see the purge solenoid drive PWM on a current clamp put around the whole harness, that would be a bad thing (large loop area) So this is something that seems reasonable on a PWMed inductive load.

FWIW I used FS1 for a Chrysler PCM replacement due to a shorted injector driver and had no issues. I think it took a little longer than expected but it was for a 2004 in 2020 - it looked new compared to my NW PA rusty pile thanks to Chrysler for mounting it in the front fender well. Aside from that no other issues and it was plug and play.

We used them 5 times. First one was no problem. The subsequent 4 were a nightmare. New codes showing up and other drivability concerns to say the least. It took them forever to correct the problem (sending us a replacement) and on 2 of those four occasions, we had to go and directly pick them up from them. They are about an hour round trip from we are on Long Island, NY. A real big pain in the ass for a busy shop like us when they tout about their shipping. No bueno. Needless to say we don’t use them anymore. We found a great company in Florida for all our re man computers. If we can’t get OEM and we can’t program them we call them. Take it for what you will. Great channel.

I was going to say that the stalling or rough running pertaining to his one initial complaint came to me as you were ending this video, that when you closed the purge valve and it stalled that the ground side of the wire in the computer may have making random or spontaneous connections before having it diagnosed. But you came to a near conclusion understanding as to the rough or stalling issues. Excellent work.

Great video Danner Boys as always, Chrysler has always had ground problems that makes you want to pull your hair out.I agree 100% the stalling is because of the charcoal canister being saturated with fuel.I got a buddy who has a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country that had the same problem with the Purge valve not working had the same computer circuit problem.I will keep Flagship 1 in mind the next time because it cost way less.Hope you feel better Paul and hope the rest of your family don't come down with what you have,Stay safe everyone and have a Blessed Week.

Yeah the Chrysler thing with APP2 is true. I work at a RAM dealer the first time I saw it when they were training us in classes it through me off. But basically its a self test the computer does to verify it has control of the circuit and since its a redundant system it only cares to test one side of it. Same thing with the throttle body, just don't stick your finger in there with the power connected... It will snap your finger off. LOL

Having the ground going back to the computer would ensure a consistent ground, i.e. a bunch on things grounded to point A, and a bunch of other things grounded to point B can lead to a slightly different ground potential between the two and this can drive computers crazy.

A few months ago i had a 06 grand caravan that would stall under acceleration. I determined the crank and cam sensor where loosing grounds. Long story short shared grounds, when egr when it opened it would pull down the ground circuit for cam and crank. I simply relocated sensor ground for egr to block and all is well. NO codes. I never really understood how egr pulled sensor grounds by opening. And yes tried a new egr with same results. I have been wanting to ask you what you thought about this for awhile. I appreciate the feedback and thoughts there is not many people to ask tough questions to especially around here and with out your training I never would have fixed the car!

If you don’t have to return the core, crack that sucker open and see where that ground trace goes. If it leads into a muddled mess of integrated circuits, let it remain a mystery. If not, you might see that it runs right into a ground pin going out with just a bit of filtering along the way. Which still won’t explain much as to why, but I always have to tear it apart... :D

@@mph5896 I opened up a “modern” aftermarket voltage regulator for my 1992 Dodge 350 a couple of years ago. It was filled with wet sand. The only electrical component inside was a single little zener diode or something like that (I don’t remember exactly what it was). The stuff that the sand was soaked in had a very distinct odor that I was not familiar with, I assume some kind of heat dissipating material. I couldn’t believe that a $30 part the size of my hand would be 80% sand 19% casing, and 1% functional parts. I don’t know if they are all built like that, but I know I went through about a dozen of them (under warranty) before finally changing brands, so I wasn’t replacing them once a month.

For computer circuits, it is not uncommon to have your hard power supply ground and a floating common. Can also be called signal ground, floating ground, isolated ground. I do not recall the proper term. On our remote terminal units, this was accomplished with 2 diodes in parallel cathode to anode providing a 0.7v isolation. This helps with ground loops and noise. when you get a chance, measure the potential difference between the 2 "grounds" on that car.

if the ground goes somewhere other than back to the ECM board, it could become elevated above the computers ground level or vice versa and cause the valve to be controlled wrong or think there's an issue and set codes. also there's back EMF pulses and you wouldn't want them running backwards through or across other grounds in a big ground loop. that could whack all sorts of things out.

I read something about a year ago where the Chrysler Dodge vehicles use the ASD relay and the computer after the vehicle has been shut off to run the purge valve several times. this may take up to an hour after shutdown. this may be the other monitored circuit that was/is looking for that ground and why it was throwing that code in video 1.
@Dr._Diag
@Dr._Diag 2 жыл бұрын
No purge solenoid actuation with key off after shutdown, but the PCM does monitor the ESIM (emission system integrity monitor) to see if a natural vacuum occurs, which should suck the plastic weight inside the ESIM up, closing the ESIM switch, and the PCM can monitor how long the switch stays closed to determine if, and how large the EVAP leak is.
@josephwash109
@josephwash109 3 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering if the old PCM was actually good and just had a faulty external ground. It seems to explain everything. If the ASD relay uses that same ground, it seems likely that's why it was also setting a code for that. Intermittently, the ground reaches a point where it can't support current flow for everything, and it drops out. This would also explain the stalling, even after the replacement PCM was installed. If the ASD relay turns off, the coils and injectors lose power, and the engine stalls. Regarding the ground side wire to the PCM, it has to be there for the PCM to verify circuit integrity. Since it's a high-side driver, the PCM knows when it powers the high side of the circuit, but how can it verify the purge solenoid got the command? If the PCM applies a bias voltage to the solenoid coil and it can measure it on the ground side, the PCM knows the circuit is intact. No voltage measured indicates an open circuit, which will set a code.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 жыл бұрын
No sir, I proved the stall was the canister saturation and if it had a faulty external ground on this system: 1 - the problem would have still be there and 2- multiple circuits (not just one output) would have been affected.

In terms of the ground going through the PCM and not being external, the only explanation I can think of, and I could be off here, is the design is to accommodate the engine harness & PCM, being used across multiple chassis and engine configurations and the engineers just deciding to go through the PCM instead of having to add in a splice and ground lug for this particular configuration. Just a thought.

Not true… I am a mechanic… A customer of mine had an engine computer on an early 2000s nissan. The computer burnt due to a solenoid drawing too many amps. He replaced it with a flagship one. Car still didn’t start. Took it to dealership. Dealership put in a new immobilizer and the flagship one computer wouldn’t take the program. Customer takes it to us. Since the immobilizer was new and oem and the flagship one computer could communicate, we got a used computer from junk yard… car started no problem. Also customer couldn’t get his money back. Also, pine hallow auto channel showed bad flagship one computer as well

@@mikesabin8568 it's called life my man! If you're looking for everything to be perfect then you need to keep looking. Because you won't find it in this lifetime! I can promise you that! With that out the way, alot of mechanic are far from mechanics, especially the ones that think they are or the "certified ones" With that being said I was speaking of my experiences with them. I've had way more OEM Parts come damaged or not working over the years compared to the remanufactured parts. Most of the time it's the "mechanic" and the few times that it's not just swap the part out, they offer lifetime warranty. It starts with the attitude you have when you call them!

A few months ago I bought a pcm for my 95 camry from Flagship one. It cost $199 and took me almost a month to get. After I installed the pcm from Flagship, the car didn't drive the same. The shift points where all delayed and the OD light was flashing. And there was no WOT downshift at all. Apparently the car needed to learn the new pcm and after a few drive cycles, the car drove normal as before. The pcm went back to the default mode after a week of driving. I called customer service and I had to fill out a form about my issue and a few days later told me to ship the pcm back. I haven't done it yet because I dont have another car and I don't want to wait another month for it to come back.. Since then the car now has been driving normal. Except for the door locks flickering constantly back and forth when the driver's door is open with the key in the ign.

It's funny how us mechanics are debating about maybe the ground this and that key off lose ground trying to connect the dots to the issue when the answer is from the manufacturer of the computer who designed the internal circuit. But it sucks we can't call up the designer of the computer to ask them

I'd never buy from Flagship1. My Silverado had problem with the KAM, with their PCM I couldn't program the keys. I returned it and lost around $80.00. I could see that they sent me one straight from the junkyard. Bought one from Florida and done.

Why not pull the hose to the canister off at the purge solenoid (so you don’t have to actuate ANYTHING), attach it to a mightyvac fluid evacuator for 15 min (with the fuel filler cap removed so you don’t collapse the tank) to remove raw fuel, and vapors in order to prevent stalling condition. ASD (auto shutdown) circuit is controlled with a low side driver in the PCM, with a fused power supply on the voltage side. I would IMAGINE that the internal ground distribution got screwed up some when you made the ground for the purge solenoid. Now that the ground circuit is constantly grounded….. It’d be nice to see module power, and ground distribution.

I put a Flagship One ECM on 2007 Dodge Charger 3.5 HO V6, due to hearing about how Chrysler 300 and Charger going into limp mode. Didn't have an issue and then, keep in mind too it had gone into limp mode about 3 times before replacing the ECM, then come to find out it went into limp mode again after the ECM replacement. Made a bad call again thinking throttle body was acting up on it, replaced that (I know Parts Changer cannon lol) then it went into limp mode again. Well did all the continuity checks to every sensor related pretty much dealing with this problem and never would guess why. Stupid red tabs on the wire connectors love to break off on Chrysler/Dodge vehicles at least in that MY and come to find out, my wife was helping me and I saw something happened on my Autel scan tool and it was either TPS or APP related and asked her what she did, she had wiggled the connector on the throttle body. That's when I had my AHA moment lol. The red tab being broken and not keeping it locked in place, the little vibration in the engine it jiggled off, so had to temporarily fix it till the owner can buy a new wiring connector for it. So in my book, Flagship One is okay to me. I do have a question for you and was wondering if I could email you my question at some point about an intermittent stalling that happens on my 2014 Chevy Malibu 2.5L LS 4 cylinder after certain Auto Stop events. My email is levster24@yahoo.com and awesome videos all the time from you. They help me tremendously. On a side note, I hadn't really watched many of your videos till after replacing that ECM on that Charger. Now I always check grounds, powers, fuses, everything I can. I even was able to diagnose my own car issues except the intermittent Auto Stop stalling on my vehicle better than the 3 weeks I took it to the dealership. So Thank You!! I appreciate you.

Same deal here. They didn't have the ecm I needed but said they'd rebuild the one we had. Vehicle issue was it would randomly stall. Got the ecm back and when it would crank the cruise control would pull it WOT. Took 4 weeks to get the ecm back after they said 1 week turn around, contacted them and they said they'd take care of it and send me a return label... 3 weeks went by with excuses and different people because the other person wasn't there etc. Then they said we damaged ecm before originally shipping and all kinds of crazy stuff, said they replaced the connector. After 2 months of being drug around on sending the unit back I decided to pop the cover off (no tamper label and still just as dirty as when we mailed it to them) it only appeared they replaced a few capacitors. Connector was never messed with and no jell removed from any part of the board besides where the 3 or 4 capacitors were.

I was talking with pinehollow ( Ivan) on a 2014 dodge van with a app code. I told him I figured it out app 2 signal keeps dropping out and he said look again. Sure enough that was not the issue. It ended up having the 5 volt supply shorting to ground (a wire rubbing, it was the hardest find because it only short for a split sec. plus it wouldn't act up for hrs). Its weird it only set app code even though the 5volt supplied throttle position, crank sensor and a couple other things. I would of got burned if it wasn't for ivan .
