I'm sorry I was not more clear about the direction I took and why in this video. I truly felt going into this job (fuel pump running continuously and a no com, that we had a shorted reference circuit (I've seen it many times). Then with me teaching a class of 20 students while live troubleshooting, I got tunnel vision. But these procedure shown are super important to know how to do as 99% of people are lost after checking fuses. What do you do when the fuses are good? "Must be a bad engine computer"...nope, it sure isn't :-) So I will say this again, yes, I should have started with fuses, but do yourself a favor and watch the shorted MAP sensor video and you will have a better understanding. I’m a DIY guy with a decent arsenal of troubleshooting equipment. I work on all our cars (2 that are over 200k miles and a truck at 150k) plus help a lot of friends/family. Stumbled across your videos working on one of our vehicles and have watched a lot since then. Sometimes I find myself saying “Why doesn’t he just.....?” but then I remind myself that you’re teaching systems and processes and concepts rather than a specific procedure. I actually think some of your best videos are like this where you get to a fault taking a little round-about path because it shows more of the whole picture. Someone at home might have been inclined to chase why the fuel pump was running full time and they would have eventually gotten to powers/grounds at the computer, found the fuse, and then (hopefully) looked for the cause of the fuse burning out. It’s not direct, but it’s not necessarily wrong either.

I have a 96 buick roadmaster with a 5.7l v8. I recently lost all fuel pressure. I've replaced the fuel assembly, fuel pump, regulator and relay. I'm still not getting any pressure. One thing to keep in mind, unplugging a sensor assumes the short is in the sensor. This video showed us that a harness can be shorted as well. Unplugging the sensor would not have caught that. However, checking the fuses would have pointed a technician in the right direction eventually. Thank you for the awesome videos you provide us with Danner!

Instead of cutting a perfectly fine wire, why don’t you remove the pin bushing from the connector housing with the appropriate terminal removal tool and simply push the pin pushing back into the connector housing when done? It takes only a few seconds. That’s how I work. Other than that, you have a real gift of teaching. I learned a lot from you.

yep, I seen the harness wasn't behind the pump where it should have been in the older footage! it's little details like that which make or break repair work, causing future issues. the worst part is, they may have seen it and decided NOT to redo the job (to beat book time) or just sloppily put on a zip-tie which broke apart long ago. I always look over everything and often find possible future issues, but you cannot catch them all.

Paul I have a question where I’m seeking only guidance upon a direction to go in. So customer on Audi Q5 2.0 had oil level temp sensor say no engine oil stop. He freaked and put 6 litres of oil in. So likely it already had nearly 5 litres the amount it should have. Oil was up in air mass. Oil was bursting out seems where turbo joined into exhaust. First 02 reading stuck, rich not surprising either. So learnt on Audi Q5 when bonnet open it triggers electronics to check oil level and temp sensor. This is a variable resistor. Batt volt in. Ground. And a white purple signal out which on fluke multimeter in slow mo video shows it jumps between 200 and 800 milli volts stop on some figures in between. No scope here sorry but sensor is brand new. Checked ECM where signal wire goes and power and ground to sensor. Power and ground both good to sensor. ECM wire to sensor at at ECM is showing alternating figures suggesting wire to sensor good. Bonnet catch switch wiring on diagram goes to a power control module. So now I know on my AUTEL ms906 I can see oil height in live data. Yet behind steering wheel in dash it says key on stop oil low. Yet in middle of car dash the infotainment system it says cannot communicate with oil sensor. I’m thinking and guessing the BCM does the job of handling the low oil message. Any way you know to confirm that. So the question. What’s my direction now on fault finding this, without that is simply buying second hand replacement electronics from eBay in a set and changing the lot to get rid of this headache. I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to be a parts changer. Get my meaning

My 2004 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 has had me chasing my tail for months. Every possible code has been shown. Starting with the (No 5v reference) Replaced maf sensor and new wiring pig tail. All other sensors except the crankshaft sensor have been replaced. It's not fun to do. I'm sure you're aware of the difficulty for that, especially without a 2nd set of skinny arms and hands, right?. So, I've also recently replaced the ECM. It seemed logical and I was unsuccessful. The code (No 5v reference Maf sensor) came back and I think it actually laughed at me. :) :(... So then I just watched your entire educational video and I'm about to venture out to my Cheap Jeep project and look at that O2 Sensor wiring and see if someone didn't route it through the water pump as you pointed out. It makes Sooo much sense if that's the case. Boy oh boy I hope that's the problem and you saved me from that crankshaft sensor replacement. So I will give you the answer when I find it. Great video and diagnosis that no other video offered. I wouldn't have considered a second 5v wire or something like wiring improperly reinstalled against the exhaust pipe. Thanks again To be continued. Lol

I bought a ‘98 Jeep Grand Cherokee (as is) it was running a little rough. I didn’t think much of it. After replacing the plugs and wires it didn’t help. Then after driving it about 10 minutes it died. It restarted and backfired and died again. It started right back up, and i drove it for about 45 minutes with no problems. It set for a couple of days, it would start run for a couple of minutes then die. It would have to set for a few minutes then it would start and repeat the thing. I borrowed a code reader and the only code was bad ignition coil. That made sense so I replaced it. Now no codes show up, so I checked the 3 sensors and left them unplugged and ent to the next one all read 5.1 volts. The electric door lock doesn’t work on drivers door, but once in a while it makes a noise. One electric window doesn’t work. Could this cause it to run and die? Another thing I have no idea how long it has been setting, it has only 94,527 mile and has a salvage title. Could old gas cause this problem? Sometimes it will run for 30 minutes to an hour with no problems. So while it was running smooth idling about 600 to 700 rpms I started wiggling wires and when I got to the first cluster of wires on the computer, t6he plug toward the motor it died. I thought I found the problem, so I made a wedge and slipped it in to hold it tight. I drove it about 5 miles and it died. It died 3 more times before I go it home. So now I’m totally lost. I bought this for my grandson, now he said he didn’t want it even if I get it fixed. So I’m going to sell it, and try to recoup my money. I can’t sell it like this, I need to fix whatever the problem is. Can you help, got any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hi I am a fan and watch your videos. I Do have a situation and hoping I get some direction. I have a question on 2004 suzuki that cranks but not start , and no comm issue and but have proper ground and power on pins 4,6 , and 16 on the DLC . Also ECU is not grounding the control wire on the fuel pum relay control wire, therefore no power on fuel pump. However, I noticed igintion fuse that power fuel pump also powers the ecu and the spark plugs, that wire if I cut it from the fuse now the cut wire stilled attached to ecu shows ground. with a light test This supposed to be power but shows ground when disconned from the fuse does this mean there is a short in the ECU? Also the ECU is not grounding the control wire for fuel pump relay as I said. Would you say the ECU is shorted? Thanks

Paul, I just wanted to say that I enjoy your videos a lot. I have a quick question I wanted to run by you to see your thoughts. You talk about unplugging sensors one by one to find the faulted sensor. We know that sometimes these sensors can be a pain to find and disconnect. What would your thoughts be to take a 120v to 5v dc transformer like you use to charge your computers at home, unplug the ECM, TCM, whatever you are working on and use the wires out of the transformer to hook up to the 5V reference and sensor ground on the harness side. After you do this it will energize all 5V circuits. Then take your amp clamp on your meter and go to each 5v reference leg on the sensor and see what leg maxes out to whatever the mA rating is on the transformer is? Wouldn’t this show what sensor is shorting out without having to disconnect each sensor or without having to really open up each circuit? This will obviously put a load on the transformer and you wouldn’t be able to keep it plugged in very long. By using a small enough transformer though you wouldn’t risk overloading the conductors. Just curious on your thoughts.

It would work but you still have to work at each leg of the sensor circuits. Not sure it would save much time. Especially with today's cars that all run separate reference wires back to the computer for each sensor. They are shared internally, but not externally like in the car in this video. Then some are using up to 4 different regulators now. 😉

Mine has the infamous, "No Bus," error. The scanner thinks the key is not even on. Thus, the ECM is bad or crusty wiring is causing the error. The ASD circuit is shorted to ground. Before the shut down, an error denoting the catalytic converter located in the front part of the exhaust manifold was functioning far below perimeters. Maybe I should check out that oxygen sensor harness. The voltage gauge was going crazy right before shut down. After shutdown, the battery was hissing. I suspect a big shirt circuit, probably right where you found your large wire damage.

Intermittent problems are super difficult. Find out what all runs off of that circuit and then do a good visual inspection, especially on the areas of the harness where there is heat and vibration.

@@nancylewis7142 2 months ago is the last time it blew? And it's a daily driver? That won't be easy to reproduce. But yes, I'd look under the hood first. Visual inspections of everything near heat and look closely at where all the harnesses are rubbing. Also watch my Hummer case study with the shorted reference circuit for an idea. Where do you get your wiring diagrams from? I've Bern looking for a wiring diagram for my 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7l. All I can find are diagrams for hemis. I've never had to work on electrical on cars, but this issue hs been driving me crazy

I am not pro by any means,but what I do when looking for shorts,is to substitute a light bulb in place of the fuse,so when you find the short the bulb lights so as to not waste fuses and when you move a harness you may see the light flash as the short comes and goes.The bulb needs to draw at least as much amperage as the fuses' rating. I simply soldered wires to a blown fuse and connected a headlamp to it,so just plug into fuse socket.
@ScannerDanner4 жыл бұрын
You can do that but not on circuits that have low resistance outputs. Your test light can easily find a path to ground through the fuel pump and O2 heater circuits and would light just as brightly as if you were connected straight to ground. So, you can use that method but you must know about this variable or you will absolutely chase your tail on some cars.
@lesbender2364 жыл бұрын
@@ScannerDanner I agree,but if you have say a 5 amp fuse and the test light .in this case a headlight bulb that draws more than 5 amps,it will not light until there is low enough resistance to draw whatever it requires. I was not speaking of a regular test light,in which case you are correct. Thanks for responding

Hmmm. Next time im running into a short on a 5v ref im gonna put a low amp clamp on it and see if i can call it that way. A short pulling the voltage down meens more current flows than what is suported by the circuit...
@ScannerDanner4 жыл бұрын
That would be correct BUT, the computer systems are smart and will actually disable to 5v regulator (isolates it from the circuit) as soon as a short is sensed, so this method would prove to be frustrating on some models.
@stevejakobsen27654 жыл бұрын
@@ScannerDanner Ah. That is true. To fight that one would have to have the scope running to catch it when you turn the key on. You know, before it cuts out to protect itself

I've got a 97 Cherokee crank but no start, dash doesn't work, no power to the OBD2 I probed power going into the ECM , 12 volts good.. tested the grounds zero ohms on the grounds for the ECM but the 5 volt out of the ECM do not have power is that a bad ecm? Or do I need further diagnostic?
@ScannerDanner3 жыл бұрын
there is more than one 12v supply on the ecm, you will have at least one wire that is hot all the time and then another that is ignition power. Also the ohm test for the grounds is NOT a good test. Here is why kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5TWf4KAq8ljl9E Also, the fact that your dash doesn't work either is telling you, that you have another issue You will need some good wiring diagrams eautorepair.adtrk.biz/?a=10817&c=24&p=r&s1=
