2013 Hyundai Elantra Ticking Noise due to Bore Scoring and Piston Slap

The dreaded ticking happens to these engines when they are cold or are operated in a very cold climate such as Canada. This car has been in Minnesota the past few winters and has developed the tick of death. I hear that they are now replacing short blocks in Canada under warranty and extended warranty. Here is the video that shows the bore scoring and piston coating material degraded:
• WHY MY HYUNDAI ENGINE ...

You are spot on, the short piston skirts and high compression pressures put high loads on the cylinder walls and skirts. It seems all Hyundai engines do it to some degree although the Theta engines seem to have taken it to the next level, if ignored the knock rapidly develops into scored bores, burning of the oil, seizing, snapped rod and if you are unlucky the remaining oil exits through the hole in the block lands on the exhaust cat and the car burns to the ground. Even the old 1.6 Lt Alpha engine developed a similar knock but as they were lower compression and much lower horse power they seemed to 'tolerate' the piston slap better, I used to get the same metal out my 1.6 almost every change, it's dense so most of it falls straight to the bottom of the sump although you will find some of it on and around the pump suction screen.

Isn't that good luck if your car with a blown engine catches fire ...ok maybe you don't have fire insurance ...oops!

My old 1.6 had a different problem. It always seemed to burn out coil pack #3 at random times. Though one day I did realize it had a series problem. It wouldn’t turn over one day leading to a burnt out starter. Once that was fixed it would go down the road but would refuse to go over 4000 rpm. It would start sputtering and would refuse to produce power. The final straw was when it ended up mechanically totaled. For the 08 accent I needed a new exhaust system and a new power steering rack. The parts came to 1200 bucks prior to installation and the car was worth 300 bucks. With 128,000 miles on it I just sold it to a salvage yard for 300 bucks and was done with it.

That's a very low milage vehicle for having a knock. I have a 2014 hyundai elantra 1.8 engine that I bought my daughter and last week I got in to it and turned the car one andit made a loud ticking sound initially but almost immediately it went always. After doing lots of research I came to the conclusión. That it was the VVT cam sprockets and timing chain and guides. So I removed the valve cover to find out that the car was full of gummed up sludge. I mean really really bad sludge. My first thought was. This car is a gone. But it did still sounded good after the initial engine start. So I did more research this time on engine sludge and came up with with a video from WatchJRgo on KZbin. Where he bought a Cámaro with lots of sludge but no where near as much as my Daughters Elantra. He uses BG engine restoration kit. I was very escépticas because of how nasty my elantras engine looked. But I said to my self.what could go wrong. Then I bought the Engine treatment wich was $300+ and flushed the engine. And I sweater it was a mirarle. The engine sounds brand new. Then I removed the valve cover to see how good of a job BG did. And I was completly speechless. The top of the cylinder head looked almost new. I posted a video of the before and after the BG treatment. Go check it out. I know that in your occassion you have metal in the oil wich is a terrible news. But for those who just have a ticking sound from the VVT system or timing tensioner. This BG engine restoration kit is something that you should look in to. Good luck

my 2011 hyundai tucson had this same problem, they were not even going to do anything about it. "Were sorry sir, but if you cant prove you have had regular oil changes we cant help you", and i replied with " Sorry mam but I have all my documents i've saved for everything to counter any reason your corporation might pull on me in order to get out of helping me" I save everything in regards to receipts and service reports to anything that costed me a lot of $$ Ever since the xbox RROD i don't mess around with these huge businesses. They're going to fix it no matter how hard i have to battle. and they did. My car is running again.

My 2nd Sonata engine (Hyundai Replacement) has a damaged piston. I have 3000 miles and three months left on the extended warranty they gave me on the second engine. Hyundai USA is telling me that I'm not covered under the recall because the damage wasn't caused by the connector rod. This is not a recall issue. It is a warranty issue. My original warranty which they extended includes Pistons. I've initiated a claim with Hyundai USA. I am waiting to speak with Hyundai USA directly. They are trying to weasel out of their commitment.

Trade it in and buy a different brand. People trade cars in to avoid the hassle associated with selling a questionable car outright ( though stating AS IS in the add absolves you of any and all future issues)

I think I might have this issue in my 2019 Tucson with the GDI variant of the Nu with 21K miles. Sometimes when I start it after it has been sitting for a few days I may hear somewhat of a knock but it seems to go away once warmed up. Is that typical? I use 5W-30 oil and premium fuel. I also experience fuel diluting the engine oil, but it's minor and I keep a close eye on it. Last November I changed the oil and saw no metal shavings.

Mine has the same sound. I have a 2012. Started making the sound a couple years ago. Brought it to the dealer considering I had a recall on something else. Hyundai said the knock was nothing. 2 years later and still there. Someone mentioned it sounds like vvt but ive read these are infamous for piston slap. I'm open to suggestions

This bore scoring seem to be a problem in all these aluminum block engines. The manufacturers need to go back to the drawing board and come up with better engineered solutions.

If you're mechanically able take the engine out, have it bored and get new pistons, have it THOROUGHLY cleaned and get new oil pump, rtc. 4 pistons with rings barely 100.00, WHY chance it and buy another bad engine? The more i watch youtube the more i see these same complaints so its not due to bad maintenance its the shorter piston skirts. I saw someone else that had a salvage car and they werent able to get a new engine either

It was significant bore scoring. Look at my other videos and you'll see the problem. It has nothing to do with the oil or the oil filter. I ended up getting a remanufactured engine from Hyundai and everything's been perfect ever since. I bought a short block and built it up with other components

There is a warranty of 100,000 miles or 10 years so if you're still within that they should cover its plus he'll probably about three thousand additional dollars for all the additional things. There was a class-action lawsuit but that is over as of about 2 years ago
