Today my 2013 Sonata decided to implode. Blown motor and rod knocking after Hyundai did the engine recall and gave it the green light!! P0014 and P1326 codes thrown. What a mess!

Honda then had an issue with clearcoat failure/delamination & blamed it on customer not waxing the vehicle enough. I got bit by Honda transmission & paint issue so I'm done. Was looking to get Kia Soul, but seems like it's hit & miss with Kia/Hyundai.

Update: Our 2015 Sonata Sport with the Theta 2 GDI engine (2.4L) started rod knocking something furious out of nowhere. We had 138,000mi on the engine and car, and always did our own oil changes and usual maintenance on time. Called the dealership and they let us know they'd have to diagnose it and that there's 4 things they look for. There's three tests they perform and they look for scorched oil and heavy varnishing that can only happen with severe lack of oil changes. They also look at the "bearing clearance and tolerance" on all bearings and they look at "bearing wear" on all the bearings. The final thing they look at is the computer showing engine issues leading up to the bearing failure. If any one of these tests fail and your engine doesn't meet standard, then they replace the engine (so long as your engine doesn't have obvious severe neglect internally. Which, will be apparent via scorched oil in every nook and cranny along with extremely heavy varnish). Our car failed the bearing clearance test only, and the service reps instantly applied for a brand new engine through Hyundai. Hyundai responded back within 2hrs approving a complete engine replacement. The dealership then gave us a fully loaded 2021 Santa Fe with 600 miles on it as a loaner car until they finished our car. Around a week and a half is what it took for them to replace our engine with a new one after shipping and all, and we had a bill of $0.00 in the end. It was rather painless, easy to do, and they didn't provide the least bit of pushback on the engine replacement. The rep also mentioned to me, and showed me, that Hyundai sent out an internal memo company-wide that all the particular 2.4L in our car, all are now extended LIFETIME powertrain warranties (for original owners) because of the class action about this particular engine. Even the replacement engine we have now has a lifetime warranty on it along with the original transmission. This was all at 138,000mi on the car and wellllll above the 100k original warranty. And they still didn't so much as hesitate to make it right. We also had no diagnostic fees to pay or anything else. In the beginning, we were told that one of two outcomes were possible: #1- they discover something that rejects us from being able to get a replacement engine (severe lack of maintenance, any self-repairs that were done with negligence that caused the severe damage as a result) and we would only be on the hook for a $150 diagnostics fee. #2 - They see the engine wasn't severely neglected, it fails one of the standardized tests mentioned above, and Hyundai accepts their request for an engine replacement. They required zero paperwork, evidence of our oil changes, or any maintenance paperwork from us. We've replaced the oil pan, water pump, valve cover gasket, PCV valve, Belts, pulleys, and all kinds of things on our own on the car previously (all self-maintained) and they didn't require anything of the sort to verify or show that we've done anything on the car. They simply just took it in, checked out the look on it to make sure it wasn't severely neglected, and then got a brand new long block and installed it. The cost of the long-block was just north of $5500 and the labor was around $2800. All was waived by Hyundai and we just took back our car and were sent on our way. So, my advice, is that anyone worrying about an engine replacement just get the car in their and make good with your service rep you're talking to. It's a fairly easy process so long as you're courteous with them, straight up about the situation and history of the car (we told them exactly what all we'd done as self maintenance and etc) and they'll usually be on your side and try to get you right, because they have to maintain 5 star service reviews as best as they can. But, ultimately, it comes down to Hyundai Corp approving or denying your claim.

Unfortunately it wasn’t that easy for anyone in the early days of our ownership. I ate a massive loss selling my Sonata & will never purchase another product of theirs. My dealership experience when I first began to experience a very slight knock (before the knock issue was a known issue) really sealed the deal for me with Hyundai. All the dealership wanted to do is sell me a new car. Ya, cause why not double down on one terrible car for a second one.

Hyundai has honored all warranty and tsb issues with our 2013 Sonata and then some. What happened before the class-action is typical to ALL manufacturers. Unless there's legislation they won't do it. My Highlander needed a new engine well under warranty due to a known VVTI TSB that although common didn't result in a class-action. I dumped it for a ridiculously high price and said goodbye to Toyota.

My 13 kia koup with the SAME engine blew at 55k miles. I had to pay out of pocket $5480 for a new, used engine with 60k miles on it. Kia and Hyundai recalled every other make and model with this engine except the 2013 kia k oup with the theta 2 engine. ALL MAKES AND MODELS WITH THE THETA 2 SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED AT NO COST.

Don't ever buy another GDI engine again. They are nothing but problems. My 2013 Hyundai sonta se needed a new engine after 68,000 miles on it. Hyundai use cheap and unreliable engines. Guess what, yesterday my engine went out again. Now I have 81,000 miles on it. Never again will I buy a Hyundai of any kind.

Dealing with a similar issue with my 17 Veloster. Died before Christmas. Had it towed to several dealerships. Finally a Hyundai dealer did the SW upgrade, said my catalytic converter was plugged. They pulled O2 sensor and I was able drive it home. It went to limp mode in the way home, maybe 7 mile trip, thought it was because of O2 sensor being unplugged to allow engine to breath. Cleaned the cat, hooked O2 up. Took to get oil change, ce light came on again, then a minute later , limp mode. Got it back home and pulled the codes. P1326. See what dealer says now.

I have a 2014 Kia Sportage with this same engine i think. Its a 2.4. It started using a quart of oil every 2000 miles when it was at only 80,000 miles. Its 110,000 miles now and hasnt got worse but i hate it using oil. I am going to add Engine Restore when i change the oil and see if it will stop the oil usage.

My Hyundai hit 150k miles an my knock sensor code came up as well as 3 other recall codes. My check engine light kept flashing an my speeds reduced to under 60mph an would stall too. It started knocking the day before taking it in to Hyundai. After diagnosing the car, Hyundai service department did a BCT (bearing test) and it failed so they hooked me up with a BRAND NEW MOTOR FOR FREEEEEE no fees or nothing.

My 2016 Hyundai Sonota started consuming large amounts of oil at about 80,000 miles. I ignored at first, didn't think it was a big issue. Also at times I would hear a low knocking/ ticking sound when accelerating . It wasn't very easy to hear, unless it was silent. I also ignored that sound because no engine light or any type of lights would show up on my dashboard & it was running good. Then one day when my car was at about 99,700 miles I was driving to the grocery store & suddenly heard this loud knocking sound. Drove it I would say about 3 more miles then the engine light came on & began to flash & my vehicle slowed down completely. I was u able to speed up because I guess it was on "limp mode." I pulled over to the side of the road. Had tow truck take my car to closest Hyundai dealer. They diagnosed it with the p1326 code & replaced my engine at no cost.

At least your getting your engine is getting replaced, that's the good thing. If you believe the parts don't need to be replaced at the moment then I wouldn't but if you have believe the parts do need to be replaced then go for it. Have you asked if the parts they are suggesting to be replaced will be covered under warranty?

Thanks for the video. Hyundai has just left the customers out in the dark with those leaky/oil-burning engines ⚙😡 in model year 2013-2019. Hyundai a Korean firm at the first place, and its here for that "One-Time profit with No-strings attached" in the future! ™ To my sonata company did the software update later to prevent that bearing failures. Just traded in my 2018 sonata with 12,500 because of this issue. The vehicle set the p1326 code and went into 'limp home mode' two weeks back, which is an indicator of irregular engine sounds that could lead to a rod bearing seizure & or catastrophic engine failure. Everyone in the auto sales industry is aware of this defect, so any vehicle that has this run of engines knows the resale value is crap. Nobody in their right mind would buy a used one, even if the engine was replaced. How can you trust it? As usual, the customer gets screwed either way.

I bought a 2011 sonata last year. The car come with engine replaced, paperwork from the dealership was given to me when I bought it. My car started making a ticking noise a few weeks ago. Oil is good, not burning alot, not milky looking. 😕 I hope these comments about the engine is covered for life is true because I'm a mother of 3, I can't afford another engine or car.

When you test drive it, listen on a cold start for rattling. If it rattles, walk away! Ask about the engines history and if it was replaced, or if it burns oil. If the oil is clean and full, also walk away. Also ask if BOTH engine recalls have been done.

​ JrZ CarZ working on my friends car. just found a fat hole where the #1 cylinder. Same thing as you, out of warranty. Update: so after some research it shows that the car should still be in warranty since they extended it to 10 years/120k miles we will see how this process goes since the car is technically a 15 but manufacture Nov of 2014. Hopefully they don't give the owner a hard time

The wife's sonata threw this same code few days ago. We had just gotten back from a road trip a a day or 2 before. I'm glad this didn't happen going or coming. Called up the dealer to have them check it out, said they are booked up for the wk (I wonder why😏) and top it off they dont have any loaners. Dropped it off yesterday, no word from them yet. Hyundais are a piece of crap for a car. The tail lights always going out, the dash is full of cracks, looks like a spider web, and the pass seatbelt receptacle needs replacing. I've had a few cars in my time and never had any of those issues.

It’s the Theta engine design. Known failure. 2012 sonata 2.4 at 80K. Long story short recent dealer replaced the long block with a rebuilt long block. They are not putting new long blocks in. $0 charge. biggest angst is I just bought an ‘18 Sportage, before this, loaded with the 2.4 Theta. One week after the sale Kia sends a notice that the engine is lifetime warranty because of this known failure. They know it’s a junk engine. They’re still putting them in and selling them like that! That’s BS. They now have a 2.5 design, but still selling ‘20 models with the 2.4.

I lost my 2.0T last October. I've had a $16k lawn ornament since then. I was 10k miles beyond the already extended miles. I got a letter from the Hyundai Theta 2 Engine Settlement a week ago. They've extended the warranty on the 2.oT and the 2.4 to lifetime. Been making calls and visiting my local Hyundai dealership this past week. Was told if I can get the Campaign-953 update into my car, I'll qualify for a new engine. This directly from Hyundai Customer Care. Car is headed to the dealership this weekend.

They told me I could be rejected because I did not have the update installed in the car. However I got no notice saying I needed the update . This just happened to me Saturday with a 2013 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L GDI with 131,000 I had to tow it to the dealership today and I have to pay a $135.00 diagnostic fee I have only had this car 2 years bought it at 96,000 miles hope Hyundai dose the right thing 🤷🏽‍♂️

No but I’m sure the dealership knew I take care of my car I just put a new front end suspension on it just before that happen all brand new control arms axles in and out tie rods sway bar bushings and sway links break calipers break pads and rotors I also had just did the oil change a week before my motor failed I change my oil every 3000 miles also I had just change the spark plugs when I did the last oil change before the motor failed

I have seen many such videos on hyundai kia engine failures and fires,brake oil leaks and related class action lawsuits by customers. Yet reviewers dont say anything and most buyers are blissfully unaware. Even scotty kilmer noticed cam wear at 100k on a genesis model and always mentions that this is an inferior brand.

woo i still have my '14 sonata - 3 years ago my engine stalled while driving on i75 during 5 oclock rush hour. Luckily, I was able to slowly exit and pull over. I was able to start the car and drive it to my local hyundai service center and repaired the issue without cost. Mine was code: P0014 & P1326. Luckily, The 2011-2016 Hyundai Sonatas were offered an extended warranty

You got 4k more miles than I did. Just hope Hyundai still covers it. No warning, no knocking, no check-engine light. It just seized on the interstate on-ramp. I work at a Hyundai dealer and knew about this before getting the car. They assured me Hyundai was going to replace it when it happened. That was 3 years ago and it just broke 2 days ago.

My 2018 sonata did this at 30k was knock sensor wire and soft ware update and now I’m at 51k and it’s doing again and can’t go over 7mph and it is also burning 3quarts of oils in a 4K mile time frame

What ended up happening in your situation? My 2018 sonata went into limp mode with 5,600 miles when I was leaving the dealership after getting the 953 campaign done. No issues since but I’m only at 39,000 miles.

2015 sonata with a 2.4L 134,700 miles same thing. Mine doesn’t seem to be burning oil, but same codes, same knock today. Check my oil and it’s definitely got some metallic oil in it which is a symptom as well

This just happened to me tonight!! Had oil changed not too long ago. On my way home power dropped, guess it went in to limp mode. Stopped at the first place i could. Checked oil, gone!! Added 4qt. Limped to the auto parts store, checked , P1326, P0014. Recall was done. So my question is are they supposed to replace my engine? According to NHTSA they are supposed to replace the harness or the engine.

just towed my 2015 Sonata 2.0 Turbo Sport Limited home. Same issue. Limp Mode. I heard no knock driving it. Started hearing it as the AAA driver pulled it onto the flatbed. Just turned the 100,000 mile mark Monday, so of course this happens now, once the warranty expires.

My 2015 Hyundai Sonata Limited started experiencing engine problems (oil consumption, mostly) at 48,000 miles. At 54,000 miles the engine started knocking. The car went into limp mode; the dealer replaced the knock sensor and told me a bad sensor could cause the engine to shake and knock. Two days later, my engine was shaking and knocking and went into limp mode again. I brought it to the dealership again and this time, the manufacturer recommended total engine replacement.

At 320,000 95 Tercel died. Son's 2010 Corolla going strong at 180,000. Daughter's 2006 Civic going strong at 210,000. Have a 2014 Elantra at 145,000. Got it 8/20. Stayed away from Sonata.

It's sad cause I really did like this car.

I don't know what is happening with made in USA Hyundai's, but the ones from Europe which are shipped from Korea, don't seem to have such problems. There's no recall in Europe about these engines. Here I see Hyundai's with 2-300.000km and over and engines still work.

@@tkrdg7885 these Tucsons have Theta 2 engines ?? If yes, then I believe you, Theta 2 engines have problems ( 2.0 mpi, 2.4 mpi, 2.4gdi). In Europe I've seen Tucsons only diesels or 1.6Gdi and 1.6T-gdi (Gamma 2 engines) which seem to work pretty well . Stay away from Theta 2 engines.

in Europe a lot of the Hyundai vehicles have their turbo diesel motors, and not the garbage Theta 2 2.0/2.4 GDI four cylinders. Here in the North American market they went away from the V6s in the 2010-2012 time frame and started using GDI and that is when the problems began (starting in 2013).

I purchased the car in 2019 because it had low miles only like 44,000 but if I would have known I was going to have engine problem I would have purchased something else

Was thinking about replacing my 2001 Honda Accord "beater" with a newer "beater" car. There's a 2013 Sonata GLS near me with 91k miles for a good price. Not so sure it's worth the risk now after knowing of these engine issues.

I live in Australia and the Kia/Hyundai cars here all come from South Korea. The one's you have are all built in Mexico and Alabama if I am correct. Bad quality control ....no problems with cars from South Korea. In fact Hyundai is the 3rd largest supplier of cars in Australia, almost beating Mazda in second place ... I have only had Korean cars since 1997

I bought my 2013 Hyundai Sonata preowned in 2016. In 2017 I was notified by mail that there were some recalls on my car. I took it in for an inspection on the engine, it failed. They replaced the engine, if took two weeks. They also extended the warranty 10 more years. I did receive a rental for the two weeks. Tomorrow we’re taking my car to the dealership due to engine issues again.My car is hesitating whenever I accelerate, I hear a metal rattling sound when driving and the car seems like it’s stopping when I’m giving it gas when I drive. My husband thinks it’s a rod bearing issue. It’s scary. Idk how we’re going to drive it an hour to the appointment with the bad sounds and issues. I have 6890.00 left on the car. Paid 14,900 for it. Btw, I haven’t even got a check engine light with all of the issues. Before the new engine was replaced in 2017, I only had 32,000 miles on it. It has about 63,000 miles on it now
