Listen to what an engine knock/rod knock sounds like on any combustion engine.
The difference between an engine knock and a valve train noise is the speed of the sound and location.

My car developed a rod knock at 300k miles. Been driving like that for a year and a half, 700 miles every week. I comute 2 hours to work each way. At first the knock was noticeable while taking off from a stop. Now i can hear it at all times very subtly, almost not noticeable. My car has 370k miles now. Got a new engine ready to install. My car is a honda accord.

I doubt very much that you had a rod knock, car wouldn’t last an hour let alone a year and a half, makes no difference which vehicle manufacturer.Probably had detonation which can sound similar.

Mine was caused by a weak oil pump. Didn't detect the pump cause I was running it in town and not much stress. Changed my spark plugs today after what seemed like a misfire earlier. while listening to the engine I heard what sounded what sounded like rattling with the hood up. First thing that came to mind was a potential knock, not knowing what an engine knock sounds like. This reassured me it was definitely not an engine knock but something just moving around or working. thanks for the video nice and short and straight to the point.

could be your lifters, or injectors. (injectors can be super clicky sounding, and its normal) If its your lifters or lash adjusters depending on the engine type this can also be normal, but if its like super loud, you might want to look into it.

Misfire can be caused by almost any electrical component related to ignition. Especially all the ground bolts, and wiring harnesses. And airflow and pressure sensor,.and O2 sensors. The spark plug gets dirty, but so does every connection on the vehicle.

About the same description with what happened to my TJ. Had a misfire when I changed all six spark plugs. Ran the code and had two cylinder misfires in 3 and 4. I swear, all I did was change the plugs out of cylinders 1 and 2 with 3 and 4 and vice versa. That "knock" went away. Not sure exactly what it could have been.

Good video, straight to the point, thank you for this. My engine (transverse DOHC V6, with timing belt to the exhaust cams, and intake and exhaust cams on each head linked by a chain) developed a pretty soft knock that starts once the engine gets up to temp and is almost unnoticeable at idle, audible at low RPM (800-1600 rpm or so) and then can't be heard after 3000 RPM, and it's decidedly at valvetrain pace. It got milder when swapping from 10W-40 to 5W-30, and got louder again once I added some "hydraulic lifter additive", leading me to suspect either something with the valvetrain itself or possibly a form of piston slap caused by gunked oil rings. Cracking open the front head revealed that I was missing(!) the lower chain guide for the cam chain on that head, and that the plastic surface on the remaining top guide had disintegrated. I wouldn't have even realized this was an issue until I found pieces of the plastic guide bit in the oil pan, and pulled up engine schematics to check how it's supposed to look. I've not yet examined the rear head. I've been fearing more substantial damage, but since this car is old but new to me, I suspect someone half-assed an engine overhaul at some point and left some parts out, giving me hope that the noise is just due to a problem with the chains and possibly some debris in a lifter. I've ordered a new set of chains and guides, and will be inspecting and cleaning all lifters and flushing with 0W-20 (and maybe a flush solution) in the hopes that the noise goes away and that the engine isn't on its way out. Again, thanks for this. You've given me some optimism. :) Edit: I also borescoped the cylinders to check for obvious burn marks or signs of valve impact, but I couldn't find anything of the sort.

Hey no problem and good luck with the job. Chain and guides will probably fix it. How many other things can go wrong all at the same time? I don’t think so.
@peterjohnson9438
@peterjohnson9438 Жыл бұрын
@@Motorcarnut Thanks for the reply! I'm a pessimist by nature, I expect the worst :) Those chains and guides need fixing, but the noise could also come from the hydraulic timing belt tensioner, so swapping that out at the same time might well fix it. Cars are fun. I'm still at the phase where I'll throw parts at problems, then feel stupid when the issue that actually caused my concern turned out to be something simple and dumb.

I'm noticing the same issue. After buying my old car but new to me 2011 Chevy Impala. I notice on cold start ups here and there it makes a knock/ticking noise for a minute then goes away. If i rev the car to 3000rpm or above i can kinda hear somthing. Im scared and not sure what to do. The car runs fine and only has 58k miles clean title.
@peterjohnson9438
@peterjohnson9438 11 ай бұрын
@@BobbyISS the difference here is that my knock *started* when the engine warmed up, whereas yours ends once the engine gets warm. Most engines will resonate at some frequencies (2000 and 3000 are quite common), so if there's anything at all loose on there it might rattle. Some ticking at startup can also be caused by lifters/hydraulic lash adjusters having drained and not getting up to pressure until the oil flows freely. Sometimes fuel injectors will also get really noisy while still working well. I'd suggest you take it to a reliable mechanic and get them to listen to it (perhaps with a stethoscope) as it starts up, warms up and then as you rev it up and have them give you their opinion. As a follow up to my posts.. the car works now. Needed new chain guides and timing belt components (tensioner, idlers, water pump, belt) and fresh oil. I'm keeping an eye on the metal content in the oil, because there's still a chance that a bearing might be on its way out.

Nice video. You describe the higher rate Main Connecting Rod Bearing Knock from severely worn bearings due to oil starvation and half rate Valve Knock from bad Lifters and Cam wear due to oil starvation as well. But you should include "Detonation" Knock (or Pinging) which is caused when the air/fuel mixture burns rapidly other than from the spark flame front (a smooth flame burn from the spark, and a rapid explosive burn spontaneously from another area in the cylinder - usually near a piston edge). That Knock is a bit more random and is a sharper in tone and duration. Pinging can lead to a hole being blown through the piston, the cylinder, the valves, head gasket, or even crack the head.

I have a 2020 Toyota Corolla with 41,000 miles on it. On my way home from work about a week ago I ran over an object that destroyed my upper and lower oil pan. I took it to the dealership to get this diagnostic. What they wanted to replace it was something I couldn’t afford at the moment. So I took my car to a local shop to get it done. The local shop J.B Weld the upper aluminum oil pan and replaced the lower oil pan with a new one. I get the car back and it’s make this exact sound from the video. My car has been saying low oil pressure off and no. Which I have told the local shop. They then tells me that I need a new engine, but this is damn near a brand new car. What should I do ?

A family member changed their own oil and didn't quite tighten up their cartridge filter all the way in their 2.4L Ecotec which caused a leak. After a week or so it was making some pretty nasty knocking noise, sounded like rod knock. I added about 4 quarts total of a mix of 5w-20, 5w-30, 10w-30, and 10w-40 that I had on hand just to get them on the road and the knock seems to have gone away completely. It's a tough little engine, I expected far less from a modern Chevy product.
@Motorcarnut

Glad to hear it worked out. It probably wasn't a metal to metal rod knock because damage would be done and adding oil would not save it. Probably was the valve train.

@@Motorcarnut The knock was intermittent, which was odd. It went away at higher speed, but was loud as hell at lower speeds, say, under 30 mph. Thank you for the comment! Yes, if possible drop the oil pan and see which rod spun the bearing and how bad it is. Sometimes you can get away with just polishing up the crank journal and replace the bearings but that’s usually rare. Most of the times if a rod didn’t poke through the block you’ll end up replacing the crankshaft which ever rod that failed and all main and rod bearings.

I had a bearing knock in my dodge ram v8, and It was coming from the right side rear oil pan area but it wasnt as loud as yours; yours is further advanced than mine was, or it has something to do with the kind of engine it is; right away I supected the bearings, and I recently replaced them. Would like to know, I have a 2012 Lincoln MKS 3.7lb engine vehicle that while the timing chain was on I put cam holders on and turned the crankshaft counter clockwise to get the old crankshaft bolt off. When I did it made a ratcheting sound and immediately stopped. Wasn’t sure what it was and thought the cam holders would hold all shafts in time because chains were all on, but when I was thinking about it I was thinking is it possible that the secondary ( small) timing chain jumped a tooth when testing to rotate backwards? I was thinking this was possible but not sure and did so much work didn’t want to put it back together in total before I know if I either messed something up or messed the timing up and need to take everything off and reduce all the timing?
@Motorcarnut
@Motorcarnut 2 жыл бұрын
You probably did jump timing, you’re never supposed to turn the crankshaft in the other direction of normal rotation for that reason, when you do you compress the tensioner and that’s when chain will jump. That ratcheting sound was probably that.

Not sure if you'll see this question but I had this same noise after a Mechanic did my head gaskets. Not sure if I even needed headgaskets I just offered to do them since I had the money. Had smoke coming out of tail pipe when turning from a full stop hitting the gas. I would have to lay off the gas then continue for it to go. But my mechanic worked on my 02 chevy impala v6 3.8 I told him to replace my head gaskets. He had my car for a while and the night he put the engine back together he cranked it up for me. It sounded so smooth like butter. 2 days later (kept car to put on the egr valve) it was knocking like this I was losing oil pressure and everything. To this day I do not know what warranted this kind of behavior. The guy was a family member of mine and he used to be a heavy drinker. I remember he said he drove 30 minutes away and back after I heard it crank up that night. Heads got machined and everything. I wonder if maybe he was drunk and floored it too hard and broke the bottom end. Or if he just misplaced something or didn't torque anything down? I wonder in my situation where it just fails out of nowhere what could have happened? I have the video of the sound on my KZbin channel
@Motorcarnut
@Motorcarnut Жыл бұрын
Wow, It's hard to predict what he could of done wrong. Maybe he didn't change or check engine oil that could of been low and caused the knock and then put oil in it when he realized it and it was too late? IDK. I actually have a video on that engine's head gasket replacement and there is no valve timing to mess up to cause that problem as well. So had to be low or no oil IMO. Hi motorcarnut, I've been having a light tapping noise only when engine is warm on a 2020 Honda HRV 1.8L engine with CVT (14k miles). Noise is heard only in drive, reverse when accelerating slowly, specially between 1000 and 1400 rpm. No noise at idle. Changed spark plugs, engine oil was clean, all levels good. Also I've read in several forums that a lot of people have had this noise from 0 miles. And that honda and dealerships have told them that it's normal. Is not the sound of ticking, it's a tapping noise behind the ticking, it's not loud, but once you hear it you can't forget about it. I have a video of it in my youtube channel and also made a playlist of sounds that are similar. Can you please hear them and maybe tell if in fact it's just a normal noise or something to be afraid of? Have had many mechanics listen to it, the first said that it could be the tensioner and that most Honda's make that noise, that it can't be rod knock sin the car only has 15k miles and hasn't been abused. Another said it could be a motor mount since he used a stethoscope and the tapping noise was heard loudly in the left motor mount but it doesn't have any leaks... could it be the hpfp or just a rythmic resonating noise? No CEL's, no performance loss... i just want to make sure nothing is wrong with my car. I've driving it with that noise for more than 10k miles without getting worse.
@Motorcarnut

Hey, I just listened to that noise. What I would do is take the serpentine belt off to rule out a pulley, tensioner or bearing noise, and see if you still hear that noise, if you do, it's an engine knock. The speed of the sound means it's the crankshaft not the camshaft as the crank spins faster than the camshaft. That noise IS NOT normal. How can the dealer mechanic not hear that. Take the car back before it gets worse and they blame you!

This kind of knocking developed on my jaguar xe 20d and would increase in frequency when accelerating- but the noise would completely stop once the engine heated up. I had read some posts of people saying if it goes away when the engine heats up then dont worry. Well, rip my 20d after 140,000 miles almost 😢, i took it to the dealership to figure out what it is and they suspect its an engine bearing, which it does sound similar to this.
