When you go above 4K RPM, this turbo gets lit up! You can take on a 6cyl as long as you hit the red line. Anything below 4k,you might as well be towing a pontoon. If you want to take pass at 60mph, downshift to 3rd, and you will pass with ease.

'Scores' like a video game don't really equate directly but will help train drivers to be more aware and maybe lighter-footed. The instantaneous mpg readouts, cruise control, and trip meters of the newer cars are great. Got my first new car in a long time in Nov. 2013 and just travelling down the highway and clicking the cruise up/down a bit to see how that affects mpg is great! I encourage all to keep a little spiral-edge notepad in their glovebox and record gas-to-fill, total mileage, trip mileage mileage-per-trip, $/gal and the station you filled at. You also note when you do oil/filter changes/ air filter changes... Its your car's diary and way to record your journeys and a way to know the Shell station at XYZ provides better gas than the Chevron at BCD. Most don't take the time but if you have the data and can save a couple hundred dollars a year its good for you and the environment. Oh, and I did like this peek at the Hyundai Veloster...just got on a rant about the new instrumentation gizmos :-/

i think this review is great shows how good MPG u can get. i think that really important, and yes the car is a turbo but most people dont understand the turbo doesnt mean fast car. most company add the turbo for a little bit of power with a a better fuel efficiency. Turbos in this kind of car is just for fuel efficiency. it probably is at 5-7 PSI. although i think hyundai added the turbo for a more, sportier feel? but i dont know anyways i really like the review.

Unless you're going to a race track, I don't see the need for a FASTER, HARDER engine. To be frank, the 201 hp, 195-lb torque with Dual clutch transmission and a twin-scroll turbocharger is all you need to beat the traffic and handle in the corners.
@Satirical_whit11 жыл бұрын
The turbo doesn't come with Dual Clutch Trans (fyi).
@tomasmolinari154311 жыл бұрын
Uh... Yes it does. Look at their website, the NON-TURBO doesn't come with DCT, the turbo does, in MANUAL transmission, because automatic dual clutch transmission is silly.
@Satirical_whit11 жыл бұрын
Tomas Molinari ...have YOU looked at their website? The base Veloster is the one that offers DCT, the Turbo does not come with the option. 1.6L 6-Speed Dual Clutch Transmission +$1,250 (Standard Veloster) Neither of the Veloster Turbo trim options is DCT. They offer a 6 spd manual and 6 spd auto, but the auto is NOT DCT.

@guyportmonteau50219 жыл бұрын
Haha, the thumbs down numbers probably happened because many expected this to not be about fuel economy at all. One thing for sure, this review is excellent simply for the fact - of what you know you can achieve if you wanted to. Not everyone is going to cane this car every day. Even enthusiasts will have moments of enjoying the entirety of the Veloster, not just the handling only, turbo or athleticism. It probably does great on long trips and should be pretty comfortable as a daily driver. It's a cool car, it will be interesting to see if it makes it to a second generation. Regardless, I still want one, maybe even a base with a manual. I don't care about mainstream thinking. This car has the best warranty, it's reliable, sporty vs sports car - don't really care. Even a certain amount of performance is alright, then after that the higher fuel economy is good - just look at how crazy driver's are these days - if you purchase a sports car, many times people will block you on an on-ramp and you safely have to stay behind them. The practicality aspect has to be acknowledged and any version of the Veloster throws all the competitors under the bus for the features, overall quality and value. It would be great if Hyundai produces a GTI or Mazda 3 contender, but it doesn't matter at a difference of $10,000.00, because that's what after-market tuning is for.

Thanks! We saw a 2 MPG drop when running the A/C in highway testing on a mild day (mid 70s).
@TheJuice309911 жыл бұрын
Of course this car has great fuel economy . . . . . . it's a 1.6 liter. AND being a 1.6 liter it doesn't have the performance other cars in the market have. All depends on what you want out of it. If you want a decently stylish car with good MPG then go for it. Personally I think they needed at least 2 liters.
@mpgomatic12 жыл бұрын
Looks like it's rated at 22 city / 34 highway / 26 combined, so 27 MPG average is good ... it all depends on how, what, where, and when you drive. The more in-town, stop-n-go driving, the lower the numbers. On the highway, cruising speed and driving style can make a huge difference.

Great stuff. I'm wondering if the Veloster's highway MPGs will raise a bit if it's lowered a bit. Eibach has a set of springs with a 1.2-inch drop. There are low-rolling-resistance tires in the base model's 215/45R17 size, but not the Turbo's 215/40-18.

No one said this was competing against the genesis for power. You can look at the engine specs and know that for yourself. What the Veloster does is give you a good mix of performance, style, and power. You can't have you cake and eat it too, but the Veloster comes pretty damn close.

It suppose it all depends on how much money you want to keep and how much you want to leave with the people that control the oil. Over the course of 100,000 or 150,000 miles, it all adds up (without getting into any environmental aspects). The difference between 20 and 35 miles per gallon at 100,000 miles driven with an average cost per gallon of $4 is $8,600. ($20K vs $11.4K) At 150,000 miles driven, it's $12,900. It's perfectly okay to stomp on it when necessary ... :)

Hopefully, Hyundai will make the Velosiraptor R model of the Veloster Turbo like the model prepped and built by Cosworth. But for the money, the Veloster Turbo is a lot of car for the money. The live axle in rear is what holds this car back a lot in terms of handling. But there's an easy 50 HP accessible through aftermarket turbo back exhaust, bigger intercooler, piping, inlet and upping boost 2-3 psi(safe).

Just putting the numbers out there. It's not chump change. :) Gas prices differ on a regional basis. Regular may be close to $3 right now in some parts of the country, but Premium might be $4 somewhere else. Compare driving the Veloster Turbo to driving a Mitsubishi EVO. (As a personal example, my S2K gets about 24 MPG when I'm easy on it, and it uses Premium.) Bottom line: we won't see gas fall below $3 for long. It's only going to go up. Forces in the middle east will keep it that way.

FWD vs RWD vs AWD, eh? You're all over the map! ;) Hyundai delivers a lot of value, across their line. The Veloster has a quirky design, but it's a solid little car for the money. Comfort is subjective - much of it comes down to how *you* fit into the seats. The FRS seats are tight, for example. You've gotta try them all on to see how they fit. To do it properly, braking, body roll, and cabin noise need to be tested with instrumentation. Have you test driven all three?

Ive driven the BRZ and WRX and the Genesis R-Spec 2.0T. I was not impressed with the R-Spec, and never thought the Veloster was a nice car, but the more I look at it the nicer it looks. I know its not the fastest, or best driving, especially comparing with a BRZ. but for the price, and the the interior it seems like a great car for the price. I loved the BRZ seats, hated the WRX seats. So if it can compete with comfort and of brz and WRX I might give it a shot. Thanks for the response.

Hey, it's your cash. Keep giving it to the oil companies. They love it. :) There are LOTS of ways to get great MPGs without driving a Prius.
@Rawtashk3412 жыл бұрын
Except that it's not the same price. The genesis (coupe, I assume you're referring to) starts off at over 3k more in price, doesn't have all the interior amenities that the Veloster has, and gets a combined 24mg, as opposed to the Veloster's 31mpg. So, right there you're spending about $50 a month MORE on gas. Extrapolate that out over a 72 month loan and you're looking at $3400 more of the Genesis. Also, insurance on a genesis is around $33 a month more. So, $88 more per month in hidden costs.

Hey Dan, did this car really feel like it had 201hp? Having reviewed as many and varied types of vehicle that you have, I thought you would be the most qualified person to answer this but the prevailing theory is that Korean horse power is not the same as standard power? They seem to over estimate their numbers. Lots of reviews on this car suggests it runs more like a 170hp car.

but if you drive an EVO then why are you concerned with the money from gas? It's already an expensive car. I'm just confused with the priorities you have. Logically it doesn't make sense to get a sports car with a ton of power and drive it with concern for gas mileage. To be fair, I enjoy your reviews. I'm not trying to cause conflict, but I'm not sure it's a realistic perspective for most drivers. I don't question your math, but not many people are choosing between 20 and 35 mpg cars.
