All up a reasonably accurate and kind review. 2012-2013 Veloster turbo engines are rubbish, Most have been replaced with later model engines. The 2013 - 2014 Automatic Transmissions are bullet proof. The later 2015 on DCT transmissions are a problem. The back seat is only good for a dog or kids. The head lights are fine if re-aimed, (There max height setting is too low.) The media system is a bit crap, The sat nav is so crap you are better off with google on your phone. Other than that the car is fine.

I still own and drive my 2013 Veloster Turbo (bought brand new) on a daily basis and it just passed 220,000kms. I just followed the servicing schedule which is 6 months or 7500kms and it has paid dividends in longevity and reliability.

I'm driving my 2016 Veloster standard version and it has 55k miles. Never had a mechanical problem with my Veloster. This year someone rear ended me and my car had a minor bumper damage and damage on the trunk handle (where the camera is) it was fixed but the handle piece is in back order so they just put it back together (it's working fine for now).

My 2012 just passed 230K and she still drives like a champ. Minimal maintenance and no bad issues. I’m obsessed with this car (which I didn’t even want in the first place!) Fantastic vehicle and I’ll get another one when this one has had enough!

Yes 7500 Km services is what the book specifies not the 10K Jim mentions . In fact Hyundai specify much shorter than 7500km services for "sever conditions" such as short trips . Heartening to know yours has lasted 220K as my son picked one up as his first car . Longevity wasn't that high on the list at the time but he hasn't killed it yet and it's been 6 months .

So I’m confused and would really appreciate Jim’s response to this. So I just watched the Kia Pro-Ceed episode followed by this one. Now both vehicles share the same engine G4FJ engine which Jim gave the Pro-Ceed a stella ‘What goes wrong’ but the Veloster was quite the opposite 🤷‍♂️

I bought a new Veloster 2016 turbo+ and I loved it from the second I test drove it. Very comfortable and feels like I’m in a good kart especially with the paddle shifters on the dual clutch auto. You mentioned the Theta engine being a problem. I've just looked them up and, yes, they seem to be. However, it's quite hard to work out which Hyundais have them. It would be great if you could, say, include such info on a future video. Actually, how about a video going through all the recalls to look out for when buying used cars? Start with the really dramatic ones and take it from there!

I had the non-turbo veloster for a while and if you've grown up with nothing but the cheapest, most boring economy cars in your family, then it actually feels somewhat fast and fun to drive. I also really liked the size of it, with the rear seats down you can easily fit one or two full suspension MTBs without taking any wheels off, so it was convenient for a quick biking trip. Little issues I had was that the cruise control just randomly stopped working, the black trim around the edges of the door started peeling off, the high beams just wouldn't turn on sometimes even with multiple presses... And finally, the engine started to make some worrying sounds so I sold it off and got a GR yaris to replace it.

When new they replace the infotainment unit and that’s it, everything else went flawlessly…. I own a 2016 R-Spec Turbo (USA), and it's one of the better cars I've ever owned. Most of your criticisms are unwarranted. You really didn't mention the performance at all. 0-60 in less than 7 seconds, and top speed probably over 130 mph; not too many years ago that would have been Ferrari territory! Mine's the 6 speed manual. The styling may be a bit polarizing, but it's like nothing else, and I love it. It's practical (I love hatchbacks), and it's reasonably fuel efficient. The engine is very flexible, pulling hard from low rpm's. It's a completely enjoyable car to own and drive. Bizarrely, I traded in a Corvette to buy this car, and I do not regret doing so!

Base model Velosters in both generations used a 6 speed automatic transmission (not a DCT) in the non-performance trims. So if you're not looking for performance and you need an automatic transmission, they're okay. However, if you want the turbo or the N, get the manual. You get better reliability, and you have more fun.

Is the Kia proceed gt a better car? The veloster turbo and the proceed gt share the same 1.6t engine and transmission right?? It's just that in the review of the proceed gt it was said to be a bullet proof engine and transmission with little to no issues, but in this review with the veloster it is made out to have quite a lot of common faults and isn't known for its reliability supposedly. Am I missing something here?? Would they not share the same common issues?
@partyatmyfuneral1
@partyatmyfuneral1 8 ай бұрын
I think that they found out more information relating to that engine, and likely didn’t know everything at the time they made the proceed video. Mainly because there isn’t many cars or a big community of proceed owners compared to Velosters. I was actually about to buy a ProCeed after the first video, but then after watching the Veloster one, decided against getting one.

Owned for 5 years - never had a single problem - not one thing. I always recommend them based on my experience. Loved driving it and the styling was fantastic - so practical - coupe, or 3 door or hatch. Mostly there was only 1 or 2 people in car but the rear door was very convenient when extra passengers. I purchased a washing machine and rather than muck around with delivery the store helped me put it in the hatch (seats folded down) and drove the 5km home - I used to tell people it was a sports Ute!

I picked up a 2013 veloster base had it for about it about 6 months so far. Seems like i got a decent one. I got the manual. inside is pretty clean some paint wearing on the handles like he said. The radio screen does act up occasionally. It seems if i skip songs too quickly it sometimes disconnects from my phone. There's been one time where it didn't make it past the boot screen and just said veloster on the radio until i restarted it. No leaks on mine that I've noticed. Around the valve cover looks clean. No suspicious stains when I park. I really like the car myself i kinda disagree with his opinion on the seats tho. They're obviously not like a racing seat but they feel more secure than other bucket seats I've been in in my opinion. Mine had 97k miles when i bought it and ive got it up to 106k so far and no issues at all yet. Ive been doing oil changes every 5k miles. Had it on a dyno a couple weeks ago. 100 horsepower to the wheels no hiccups during the testing. I have noticed that it seems to use up brake fluid very slowly but noticably. Ive had to buy one bottle during this last 6 months to top it off twice. First time it was about half empty and was when i first got it and the other was right before it was on the dyno and i was checking fluid levels. Was a tiny bit lower than when i originally filled it up. Im gonna be attempting to turbo it with the help of a local shop among other mods i hope to do so if anyone has some advice on adding power to these and what to expect from a 2013 base model then please lmk. Main things im gonna be focusing on mod wise is Suspension I heard their rear ends benefit greatly from a rear sway bar Brakes This is more of a comfort mod for myself id like to know i can stop quickly Engine This and the transmission are what im most concerned about. Idk what kind of differences there are between the 1.6 GDI and the 1.6 turbo GDI. Is it the same engine without a turbo? Do they run the same cylinder head? Bottom end differences? Trans depending on what it can handle and how much power is added

I own a 2016 Veloster turbo , it’s good on gas and it’s been reliable with no major repairs but it’s clunky . I have the automatic and the DCT is annoying to drive around town if you have a lot of stop lights and stop signs . The way it shifts is honestly the worst part of this car . Do yourself a favor and buy a Toyota .

Adam, please allow me to be pedantic. Unique is an absolute term. Something is either unique or is it is not. There are no variations of uniqueness. So, a feature of the car cannot be very unique. Thank you. 😉

G’day Martin, I’m guessing you’re an English teacher? I’ll try to improve but when we’re filming, my poor brain is trying to focus on about 1000 different aspects of the video so there will be grammar slip ups from time to time. The bloopers will show how much of struggle it can be to present even the most simple of dialogue. - AK

I absolutely adore the Veloster except the name of sounds like m*lester and I can never unheard that. I owned a Proceed GT years ago , one of the best cars I've ever owned for a 1.6 turbo petrol with 204 BHP it was phenomenal and looked great, carbon cleaning is essential for these unfortunately though..

also some things to watch for, watch for your buttons not working on your steering wheel it means clock spring is gone out and yes it is tricky to replace. Also if it has over 100k and has a turbo don't get it the turbos form Hyundai is garbage. I have a normal and hit 150k I just had the rear main seal replaced and other 150k regular maintance. Take care of your car and it can last mine has.

CURRENTLY in my driveway sits this glorified peice of steamy . ... non turbo 166km driven by a lady and all of a sudden safe mode activated with a impeccable maintenance history, DCT transmission is gone and sydneys best techs are replacing this at the same value as the car itself,cheapest was about 75% of the cars value, 2nd hand sits at about 3.5k just to buy then you will need to program the computer to the car and learn it in Do your home work as this manufacturer has had a class action looming for a while Sports car feel NOT a sports car!! if you love it get the manual!!

At the time (early-2010's) the interiors on this generation of Hyundai product were a huge step up. But they really haven't aged that well - not like a Mk6 Golf or a Mk3 Ford Focus. Too much matt plastic, and odd design choices. Like the steering wheel, awful. Why put buttons on the lower spoke like that.

They have different rear suspensions. The proceed has multi-link, and the Veloster has a torsion beam. Might affect handling.

I never realised that they had an asymmetrical number of doors... I'm a big fan of non-performance cars, looking fast and cool. This one looks like a mix between cool and peculiar, but still. It's not really in the interest of most companies to sell cars that look particularly fast and cool, though, if they sell actually fast cars. With time, cars are slowly becoming cooler and tougher looking though. They went through a safety period of looking really shit, but slowly it's changing (intentionally very gradually I'd say). I don't think visibility out the back window was mentioned.

Veloster turbo 2013 steering coupling needed replacing. A $12.00 part but costs hundreds of dollars to install as they have to gut the steering column to reach. Then there’s the spark plugs, engine coils and catalytic converter. And the turn signals needed to be reconnected. Imagine doing all of this before 45,000 miles. Its more than just the miles it’s the age that also effects the car

The main issue is the OWNERS. They don’t understand how to care for a GDI engine. I have a fbo tuned with a stuffed K03 in my Elantra sport. The only issue I had was that the coolant hose blew off and had to get a new head gasket. This was due to my own poor maintenance

2014 R-Spec 110,000 miles. Second owner (bought at 36k miles in 2016). I’m pretty sure first owner never changed the oil-turbo blew after only 2k miles, but was under the Hyundai warranty and they were great about it. Spent a while chasing issues before I just bought the rebuild gasket kit (from Hyundai, $160 USD) and did a rebuild myself. I’d never done more than swap a headlight before, but the engine is so simple I managed it in the driveway. Not a single problem since. If you change the oil every recommended interval, they are rock solid. If you don’t, they’ll grenade through the bottom of the pan. Luckily, engines for these are cheap as chips, so you can replace it and the sweat and tears of doing so will teach you not to skip oil changes. Say it with me: “Oil is cheaper than engines.”

Do not be fooled! Hyundai’s are no longer cheap to own, thanks to Australia tax and expensive dealer labour costs. I own a 1.6t Kona and Just got quoted $2xx (part only) for a passenger front door speaker and $42x (part only) for a steering wheel cruise control module because the spring on one paddle broke (must replace the whole part). My local dealer quoted 2 hours ($310) for labour to replace these. Absolute joke !
