WinStar Farm's Revolutionary took the overland route to victory in the $1 million Louisiana Derby (gr. II) March 30, closing with a five-wide run before holding off the late charge of 19-1 shot Mylute by a neck in the final furlong at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
Final time for the 1 1/8-mile sophomore test was 1:50.28; Departing finished third while Golden Soul rounded out the top four of 14 starters.
Revolutionary capped a big day at Fair Grounds for trainer Todd Pletcher, who took the $400,000 New Orleans Handicap (gr. II) with Twin Creek Racing Stable's Graydar and won the $500,000 Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II) with Repole Stable's undefeated 3-year-old filly Unlimited Budget. Pletcher also amassed three graded stakes victories in Florida.

I like this one a lot. He breaks slowly, which isn't ideal for the derby, but he doesn't seem to have an issue dealing with traffic trouble. He has a good foundation under him too after taking a few races to break his maiden, but he wasn't rushed into the big dance, and that will probably help him in the end.

Ive always been a fan of sunbean from his first start, it was rough watching his trip. Not really blaming the jock, he tried to take the shortest way home but thats a risky thing to do in a bulky field...hope he comes back well and he should be a dominant LA bred in years to come if he stays heathly.

Watch the replay, I had both the 3 and the 7 coming back in the double. the 7 got stopped twice in the stretch.

I mean that their particular strength, ie front runner, stalker, deep closer is a huge determinator of a lot. Deep closers will always have excuses for not winning (the pace was too soft up front, we ran into traffic, etc.....).

Everyone needs to keep an eye on Mylute in the Derby. He had questions about distance by his trainer and many betters but he proved he could go the distance and around two turns in the Louisiana Derby. I have a feeling his grandsire, Real Quiet, and his great grandsire, Strike the Gold have given this fellow some of their genes to go the distance. :D

The winner was much the best but the two horse is one to watch if he is sound as he moved into fast fractions and still had plenty of horse and as far as departing goes he is a nice horse but did not have the explosive kick needed! But I do believe if he had a complete clean trip he would have been right there.

#7 Departing had a terrible trip and was much the best.

While I agree somewhat with the bad trip comments for the 7, Departed, I also believe that horses also determine their own trips. I have seen horses who make a habit of having bad trips because of their running style. I was most impressed with Revolutionary becausebhe made a big, energy expending move and was then able to dig down inside of himself and fight back when he got a challenger come up on his outside. That is a trait of a winner. Winners win and losers make bad trip excuses.

How can you have the explosive kick when you get stopped twice in the stretch. He is the better horse, imo.

Every one is entitled to there opinion and I agree he is a nice horse but the best horse in the race was palace malice but you can take nothing away from the winner as he is still green.Best wishes and I hope if your horse goes to the derby you win.

To me, it looked like Mylute was really struggling. I don't like the way his gait looked.

You said losers make bad trip excuses, that is just plain dumb.
