2013 Mini one 1.6 D - New project car - BMW N47 - Timing chain problems?

I have this engine in my 2012 London mini so am going to change the pretensioner next month. hopefully this will help it somewhat.

Normally only break the rockers when the chain breaks so as its running will be no valve damage as yet , top chain guides are usually broken

Wow, such a noise. I have a 2015 Toyota Auris 115D with that same engine, 120.000km... no timing chain noise or issues at all... been a late N47, oil changes each 8K km & warming engine before a heavy use it's sufficient for not having timing chain issues. Did you solve the issue? Apart from the timing chain, it's a fantastic engine, very cheap & smooth to run being a relatively old diesel

As for the second generation BMW Mini (R56), I understood that the 1.6-liter engine was exclusively a PSA/BMW collaboration. The 2.0-liter is indeed the BMW N47, but the 1.6-liter is the one developed with PSA. Right? Am I wrong?

I’m no means a expert… 1.3 and 1.6 petrol are psa engines,also with a turbo…the prince engine (n series) 1.6 and 2.0 diesels is a bmw n47. They also fitted the 1.6 dv6 (ford/psa) diesels later.

@@Roverturbo I am not an expert either. I thought that the 1.6 diesel engine was also of PSA origin. I didn't know it was also of BMW origin. I'll see what I can find out. Thanks for the information.

The n47 is a bmw diesel engine, but they also used a psa/Ford 1.6 diesel engines, not sure what years these are, at a guess 2013 on, these are the same as the the 1.6 tdci they used in the Ford focus, fiesta , peugeot, Citroen.

Hi There, I am buying a 2013 Cooper D automatic with 2.0 litre engine with 82k miles. I have been watching videos to see if I should be concerned about the timing chain. It has full service history and I was wondering if I should check anything or be worried about something before I take the delivery. I know this is a 1.6 D but do you have any recommendations on the 2.0 D engine? It was registered in early 2013 so I am not sure if it has the N47 engine. Thanks in advance.

N47d16 is the 1.6, I would guess yours is the n47d20 all bmw chain engines suffer. IMO due to the very long service intervals. As long as it’s not rattling at the moment and it’s got full history, short term you should be fine. I would recommend regular oil changes much earlier than recommended. 7-8k ish.

The 2007-2010 Mini R56s diesels have the w16 diesel engine not the BMW N47 engine.
