Spot on George. Yes £1k got me a full chains replacement at 172k. I could hear the engine getting noisier on a cold start. She was like a new car afterwards. Now my oil cooler gaskets gone at 195k which I’m replacing at weekend. ✊

George that's good sound advice, worked at a BMW dealers for 15 years, the School run X5s and 1 Series Diesels were the worst. But the same cars when owned by motorway high milers we saw less issues. The emissions gear is for a perfect world , we don't live in a perfect world and why i chose to delete EGR system and ran straight pipe on my old 530.

@@liviu7017 just preventive meintenance, don't risk it unless you know 100% when it was last changed. When i got the car the owner said it was last changed around 100k km ago, which was probably true but he did not have a receipt.

Keep em coming George, good stuff! Easiest way to see if your manifold is full of carbon is undo the air-charge sensor bolted onto the manifold with one 10mm bolt, check the hole in the sensor itself and make sure it's not blocked with carbon (unblock it carefully with something plastic, don't push too hard into the sensor). Then with a phone light you'll just be able to see into the manifold through the hole where the sensor came from and how bad it is. It's not a hard job to remove the manifold, decoke and refit giving the ports at the same time. A caustic soda bath will clean the manifold perfectly and won't attack the plastic, leaving it looking like it just came out the factory, in some cases giving you a noticable boost in power if it was badly coked. Don't forget to remove any sensors or electrical components before giving it a bath ;) Don't waste your money on a hydrogen clean, it will do absolutely nothing to remove carbon build up in the manifold but it will empty your pocket somewhat with no real world benefit. If your top timing chain is stretched and tensioner is loose it'll rattle on cold start for a couple of seconds, middle chain will make a wooshing sound at 1500rpm when engine is warm. Any of these noises are a cause for concern and it needs a full timing kit ASAP. N47 engines can suffer from broken chains from as little as 85,000 miles depending on the number of services and oil quality. Cheap rates for any of these jobs for George's subscribers around the Merseyside area :D

Most people assume EGR issues when rough idle on cold starts. It's a simple case of changing the engine glow plugs as they're not just there to assist compression in cold temperatures. They're used by the DME (diesel engine management system) as a sensor to ensure smooth operation of the engine. It's basic maintenance as you would change spark plugs on a petrol engine (although they are far more difficult to remove without breaking). And to anyone who thinks removing the EGR is a good idea: bear in mind the engine was designed (and it costs €Bn to make an engine) from the ground up to run with FAP and EGR. For example EGR reduces engine load / stress during light throttle applications.

I want to mention if you have bad flywheel or bad crankshaft pulley on n47 you can stretch ur timing chain from all those of vibrations. It is best to maintain this engine. I have e90 n47 177hp and omg it had so many problems at 322k kilometers it started to make timing chain rattle. So i pulled out gearbox i saw clutch wasnt in the great condition flywheel had all that liquid from ir falling out dpf was fully damaged idk how my turbo wasnt damaged that much. So change all The gaskets timing chain flywheel pulley belts removed dpf egr is still in place but programmed out swirl flaps removed and now has a remap 206hp and 411nm best daily driver. And by The way timing chain was still original on 322k kilometers. I bought it at 287k kilometers.

My best tip is use a decent oil. I used to use NAPA 5W-30 for my 67 reg F30 335D X drive N57 engine, as I got it at a heavily discounted price due to a family member working for a motor factor company, but always found that the throttle response and power produced wasn't as good as I recalled it being when using the NAPA oil. Having recently had the oil changed 3 days ago, and this time using CASTROL EDGE 5W-30 BMW Longlife 04 oil it performs MUCH better. I used to have to put the car gearbox in sport mode by pushing the gear selector to the left for overtakes. Since this oil change I now don't have to do that, the kickdown and power is where it should be.

Look into some products made by "Hotshots Secret", they might have an oil additive that you may like. Do your own research on them. Might simply be something that you would like to add to your maintenance plan. And, it might not be, but just suggesting to check their products out. No, I do not work for them lol

My 730d F01 is on 220k mile (350k KM) and is still running sweet. It had a chain done at about 180k but apart from oil changes and basic servicing it’s not needed anything else and never missed a beat. It runs quiet and still does 150mph. Next job is to bypass the EGR etc as it’s getting to the stage where I probably have a bit of carbon build up in the injectors etc.

As far as oil services go, I would recommend getting oil samples in and making a determination on the type of mileage you put on. One person's 5000kms can be much different than the next. And one person's oil choice may be different than the next. No sense needlessly changing oil when a lab can tell you. Run 8000 kms and test it to see if you can go longer or shorter. Simple.

Use a good brand synthetic low ash oil. This is important for your dpf. The bottle will have a rating on the back if it’s low ash. At least in America they do. Change every 3-4000 depending on driving habits and enjoy your car. Do not under any circumstances fall for the “annual, 10,000 mile” oils they sell. In a typical car this may be okay. But not in these

I have an E61 525d LCI from 2007 Steptronic with what corresponds to 220.000 miles on the clock. Still on same timing chain and turbo. I have both the EGR and DPF fitted. However I do all service myself with more frequent oil changes than recommended and also, cleaning EGR system including intake manifold regularly (every around 50.000 miles). I have had the car for 6½ years now and being driving nearly 100.000 miles out of the 220.000 miles myself. You need to be able to maintain a car like this yourself or it will not last and it will ruin your budget.

My n57 shit the bed at 140,000km (90k miles). Always had yearly oil changes and never more than 15k km between changes mostly less. Just unlucky i guess. It had 60k miles when i bought it and i rarely did small journeys and was always easy on the engine until it warmed up.

Hi George, thank you for your comprehensive video's regarding the N47. All great stuff and I appreciate when content creators are knowledgeable. I own a 3-series GT F34 325d with the N47 3Y71 diesel engine, built in 2014. (So slightly different from the N47 engine you work on in your video.) I just finished cleaning/flushing the DPF, which should have cleaned it up to 95% from new. (Engine-check-light came on > DPF blocked > 250.000km) But what happens when I remove the DPF: Q1: With what do I replace the original DPF? Q2: How do I prevent the engine-check-light from coming on, after having removed the DPF? Q3: How do I pass the annual road-worthy test without having the DPF? I also renewed the valve-cover and valve-cover gasket, and cleaned the intake manifold, which (of course) was full of soot! Because I have a more modern swirl-flap design, the new gasket for the intake manifold automatically contains a new swirl-flap assembly. So I will leave the swirl-flaps in place, also because of the running benefits of using the swirl-flaps. Because the intake manifold was for 60% blocked with soot, I want to prevent this in the future, and therefore delete any soot entering the manifold in the first place. Q4: Is it easier to block the EGR or better to totally delete it? Please note that my engine-design is slightly different from yours, and I might get an engine-check-light after deleting the whole EGR-cooler unit...!? Also; if the EGR remains in place, but blocked, I might have less trouble passing the road-worthy test...I don't know... Q5: How do I prevent the engine-check-light from coming on after deleting the EGR-cooler unit? Q6: How do I pass the annual road-worthy test without having the EGR-cooler? Because here in Belgium they will notice the cooler not being in place anymore, I guess... Q7: What is the risk of soot, coming from the exhaust, to block certain areas up to where I blocked the EGR off (or deleted), so it might affect the operation of the turbo or other parts? I.e., do I run the risk of polluting my turbo for instance, after deleting the EGR-cooler? Because soot cannot find a way out anymore and only builds up soot...!? Hope this message finds you, and that you will find the time to respond to my questions. Or maybe I missed out on one of your video's, that explains my question, please also refer to them as well. Ive changed rolls , tensioner,belt and all filters plus new oil on my n47 f30 but not the pulley.. simply just froggot and didn’t knew that this breaks a lot new parts caused my pulley to break wich did a lot of damage the car… when my pulley broke at first did not know and drove to mechanic like 5/6miles away. when I was driving my car did not have power at all just drove on a battery Turned out when pulley broke oil got heated up and get to turbo (had to regenerate) air intake , intercooler, exhaust system , dpf egr :((

Hi George! I just disabled EGR by programming on my 2012 e91 320d so it physically is in place but the valve is programmed to stay closed. DPF will be let in place because in Finland they may start measuring counter pressures in MOT tests.

I heard a story a decade or so back that removing dpf/egr over time will destroy the power plant. End of the day dpf egr is all because car manufacturers recommended that glow plugs on common rail diesel engines would never need replaced!!!.

Egr dpf is all about reducing emissions bud but the just clog up engines as the air in take is getting exhaust fumes put bk into it when it should have clean air.

Yes mate its all to do with the black smoke spills out the back i'll say anybody who thinks dpf limp mode etc is a nuisance they don't have the correct mentality to drive.

why go to chains instead of belts? just done tye timing belt and water pump on our 2.2 jag xf at over 100k miles, less than 200 quid, diy job

I would say its largely down to lack of oil changes and or not letting the engine warm up before thrashing it

Hi i got my oil changed yesterday. X1 Sdrive 20d n47 So required is 5.2 litres. I inserted 5.4Litres Should i get the extra 200ml removed?

I have a 2012 Cooper SD that uses the N47C20A variant of this engine. I already have done the whole pulley set overhaul at 8 years and about 80k because it was cracked all across but of course that needs my sporty driving style. I am very strict on the maintenance schedule and I put in the appropriate oil such as ACEA C3 and BMW LL-04 and my favourite variety is the 0W-40 viscosity. Beyond that make sure you have one of the BMW specific OBD scanners at hand such as the Carly BMW that is pretty ok and you can monitor many things that the car is getting up to. So far there is no rattle and no position sensor reading wobble associated with slacked timing chain is present on my car. So far so good. But yes with these cars, they are a ton of fun but if you had the money to buy a monkey that may be fun but do not forget to supply the bananas :)

It’s a 64 plate R58 coupe... extremely fun to drive and it’s a second car, so we don’t do many miles in her (holidays / weekend fun). Have a suction tool and am either changing the oil and filter every 6k or 6 months, then letting garage do proper oil drain at service time. My only issue is I’ve not found an updated clutch, so don’t want to go made with a remap :(

My n47 had a crack in the valve cover. On the rear left side when looking into the engine bay, under a bracket for cables. And I also had leaking injector copper rings, which made the cabin constantly smell like diesel exhaust

@@starstencahl8985 I have checked the head cover and there is traces of weeping, but not a leak. The smell is coming from oil being burnt on the outside of the DPF. There is oil on the back of the engine, but the only leak I have found is from the oil cooler on the other side of the engine. I would be amazed if oil found its way from there to the DPF. By the way the only way I found to install the 10mm bolts on the side of the cable holder on the head cover was one of the tiny ratchets similar to that found in Bosch 26-Piece Screwdriver Bit and Ratchet Set 2607017322. You can get just the ratchet on ebay.

That's exactly what I have done, so not sure whether it would bring any benefit by physically removing it?

That is fine the only small downside to only mapping it is that the carbon soot build up could potentially still escape in small amounts. I've personally gone down the route of egr mapped out but I will be blanking it off after Xmas.

Bought an E93 with the N47 engine last summer, and I absolutely love it! It has had service at BMW it´s entire life, I've begun changing oil every 10.000km, but i am worried about the timing chain problems, according to the service history it has not had it changed, and it makes no rattle or noises, the car drives perfectly. My mechanic says to not worry, and only change the chain if a rattle comes. Car has 240.000km on the clock, and i plan to keep it, and later on just have it as a summer car. What´s your thoughts? Going to add a towbar and a remap this summer, should i throw in the money for a chain kit, or should i keep i going as my mechanic says? I don't know the history of the car, only that it´s a single owner from Belgium, and the cars in perfect condition so he must´ve taken care of it. The possibility of him having the chain changed of the records are still there, and it´s a lot of money for new chains..
