The CVT is variable to the rear. I don't remember exactly but I think it is as little as 20% to the rear and as much as 60%. The CVT actually worked surprisingly well in the dirt. I was really surprised. -Charlie@RoadflyTV

If I may recommend you buying a 2009 and up. The 2008 was the first year and have had some minor issues. Always better to get the bugs worked out.

I offroad with 60 HP... granted not a rock crawler, but my Brat has under 100 FT/Lbs torque and 60 something HP and can definitely surprise the big trucks. Oh and people need to read up on the CVT, it is the "MPG" option, not the sporty option. We have a '12 outback with the 2.5 / CVT and it is slow, but gets in city 27 MPG and about 29 or so highway. If floored it will move pretty quick, but CVTs do not produce "thrilling engine revs" or "jerks of acceleration". Not as fun as the 5.

Charlie, Nice Review! Did you talk to the Subaru engineers that were there showing off this car? I wish Emme would of gone with you you guys would of had a blast together you could of strapped Ross to the roof like you caught him in the wild!

I'd love to see this guy with the 2.5L from the Outback, but as-is it's neck and neck with the CX-5 for me... Just a matter of deciding which traits are more important to me ;) (Quirky, safer vehicle with better AWD and an outdoor mentality or more tech-centric vehicle with more cargo capacity and city-dweller intentions)

I basically like Subarus across the board (never owned one though, only test drove them) but this vehicle needs about 30 more horses and a few more ft. lbs. of torque, perhaps a diesel option. And a 6 speed manual. And low range gearing. I'd consider one then as a second vehicle.

I said it once and I'll say it again, who ever put that CVT in that car with that impotent engine should be punished! I took it for a long test drive and I hated every second of it. It was too slow, the steering was way too light especially on the highway at higher speed, overtaking included 30 secs of planning and even if you downahift manually engine would not redline, just got stuck there at 4500 and the CVT took over

WOW, I am *very* interested in this type of car. Starting a family, new house, need a car for the homedepot trips and the toys and, I am now being told by the wife, the dog and dog stuff... :-| Anyway, so yes, this car is one I would def. consider. One big drawback - 140hp? really, 140? *sigh* like auto makers, this auto buyer will continue to seek the affordable Ferrari that can haul a farm's worth, drive like a Cadillac yet turn like a Porsche and get better mileage than the leaf... ;-)
