This is the first time I ever see you on YoutTube and first time I sit through one of your reviews. I must say, I am VERY impressed! I'm a real car enthusiast and, regularly, scout the internet on a DAILY basis looking for car reviews to read. Today, though, I was looking for more reviews on my new 2014 Nissan Rogue SL AWD and, much to my surprise and good fortune, I found this one. Without a doubt, this has been my FAVORITE review that I've seen on my new car. So, thank you very much, Alex! As I was watching you, I thought to myself: "If I were a car reviewer, I'd do it just like this guy!" You're very informative and detailed, seemingly unbiased and neutral, seem like you really know what you're talking about, you take into consideration things that REALLY matter to the REGULAR driver/customer and not to jaded, professional auto journalists/reviewers, and you do it all without being annoying! Awesome job, Alex! What I liked most about your review on the new Rogue (and, btw, I asbolutely LOVE my car!) is how you went into the benefits of the CVT transmission instead of automatically deriding it like the above-mentioned professional auto reviewers/drivers/journalists normally do. And, in the process, you mitigated their assinine arguments against the CVT, focusing on how CVT's merely don't provide a sporting "feel," which really isn't that important, but still excel on actual, quantifiable performance numbers, fuel economy, drivability and overall smoothness. PREACH IT, BROTHER! I love CVT's, and find them to be superior to regular automatics! The rest of your review was a pleasure to sit through, as well (even though I disagree in you giving the cargo area a 9 out of 10 simply for it not having a standard cover, even though the "divide n hide" system provides plenty of coverage for your cargo - and, btw, I have the optional tonneau cover and I find it to be redundant because of said "divide n hide" system), and I'll be sure to look-up the rest of your reviews, too - as well as recommend you to my friends and family. But, before I did, I wanted to write to you and let you know that you're doing a great job. Keep up the good work! :)

I bought the 2015 Rogue SL with the Premium package 3 weeks ago. I was deciding between the Honda CR-V and the Rogue. After much consideration I chose the Rogue and am so glad I did. It is a great car to look at inside and out and a pleasure to drive. The seats are so comfortable ( I got the leather) and the back seat has an insane amount of room. I appreciate this in-depth review even though I already bought one. Like any purchase, there are things one vehicle has the other doesn't and vice-versa. So I went with the vehicle that checked off the most on my want and need list. I love this car and can't wait till this cold Chicago winter departs so I can slide open that panoramic sun roof!!

I bought one of these last week here in the UK, where it's called an X-Trail. I went for a top of the range model, 6-speed manual, front wheel drive. It only has a 1.6 turbo diesel engine that seems just about enough. I fairly easily get over 50mpg though which is nice. I love the look of the car and also am waiting for warmer weather so that I can use the sun roof.

Alex is VERY detailed in all the right ways. But, I have to say, I REALLY liked the segment when he took the car on pot-holed streets. Since i'm in the city and in a very cold region, this is a very real occurrence and I need a car that can hold up. I didn't realize that my focus should be on the suspension and I liked to hear that this car could "hold up" in that situation. THANK YOU

I drove the Rogue today, along with the CR-V, HR-V and RAV4. For me, the Rogue was the far-and-away winner for a mom of 2. I really appreciated how low the seat belt adjuster went.... a feature you may have never noticed, unless you're a shorter person where a seatbelt often is uncomfortably close to the neck.. As an avid DIY-er, I also appreciate that the center armrest folds down, to facilitate pass-thru of longer boards. The CVT wasn't as awkward feeling in this car, vs the 2 Hondas, IMO. I really appreciate your videos on child seats. I have a large rear-facing convertible seat for my kiddo. It easily fit (5'4") behind me on the drivers side. I have to thank you for all your thorough reviews. You're the 1 reviewer I've been consistently going to during my car-shopping experience!

This is one of the best video reviews of any new vehicle I've watched over the past few years. It covers the car in detail and doesn't appear to be biased in any way. What I like most is the discussion moves quickly and covers the most important components showing the positives and negatives. I've found other reviewing entities cover vehicles well also, but many seem to be more commercial like or the narrators tend to be more biased in their opinions rather than being objective. For someone that is using KZbin video reviews to help in their decision making process, I would highly recommend videos from Alex on Autos.

Great review Alex covering a lot of good points. I've had my 2014 SL w/Premium Pkg since March and couldn't be happier with it. I have just over 5K miles and my highway mileage on a couple trips has been slightly over 33 mpg. The around view camera system is a great feature that is not available on other makes, once you start using it you won't want to ever be without it. My Rogue came from the factory with the tonneau cover and the upgraded rearview mirror. AS more people discover the Rogue I think it will become a segment leader.

Just picked our new 2015 cayenne red Rogue SL from our Nissan dealer last week. Haven't had it on the highway at this time but I'm very impressed at how it handles around town. If you're looking for lot's of zoom zoom forget about this SUV it certainly is no rocket but when it comes to being practical I will happily give it a five out of five. Our Rogue is top of the line and it's loaded, great technology and very nicely finished inside and out. We had given serious consideration to the Ford Escape Titanium but for two vehicles comparably equipped the Ford was $ 6000.00 ( Can.) higher, not a chance it was worth that much more than the Rogue.

Was divided on CX5 and Rogue. In the end got the 2015 Rogue SL a week ago, got a better deal. Was worth paying xtra for leather. Gives that premium feel. Drive is smooth, cabin quietness is good. The tech is WOW. The 4 sorround cameras are really helpful for parking in tight corners. GPS is user friendly. For that extra oomph switch to sport mode. Thanks for the great review

... a really great review ! We checked out the new Rogue after watching your review and ended up buying one. It wasn`t even on our short list , we were looking at a CX-5 , the new Jeep Cherokee and Buick Encore. A month later and 2,000 miles and we are very satisfied with our decision. It`s just a good overall vehicle. It has a very nice interior , gets great gas mileage and has lots of space. Thanks Alex :-)

Alex,thank you for your awesome reviews on cars. Last 30 days my wife and I have been shopping for a small SUV for our growing family:) we drove RAV4, CRV and Rogue. I think CRV's CVT is very good and RAV4 is so so. Rogue has is all and it the winner all around. After watching so many of your reviews we went with Rogue SL AWD with premium package. We are happy on our purchase so far. Only complain I have is the fuel economy. We are barely getting 24.5 MPG!!! Then again, we live in Michigan and seems like the winter is getting longer every year!!! Let me know your thoughts on MPG of the Rogue. The best thing about Rogue is the backseat!!!!! It's the most comfortable in any SUV I have been in!!!!! Keep up your good work and know we ALL appreciate you!!!!!! Thanks again.

akian hossain purchased 2015 rogue in february, first 1500 miles was averaging around 24.5mpg as well with about 70% city. Driving around in eco mode for the next 1500miles and adding a 400mile round trip (30.7 mpg around 75mph) has raised the average to 27mpg. Eco mode allows easier foot/throttle control to keep the revs below 2000rpm, and you can get enough pickup around 1800 even around city, to help get much better mpg. It seems mpg has improved as weather has gotten warmer. AWD S model with family package

I really enjoy watching your reviews, you are truly one of the best reviewers on youtube. For Nissan Rogue I think it is one of the best crossovers that I have seen in 2014. Exterior and interior looks just awesome. I hoped Toyota Rav4 do well but they truly disappointed me. Rav4 dashboard was too high and ground clearance was too low and the exterior style looks too granny but this Nissan Rogue truly excites me. The only thing I am waiting for to hear is the quality assurance. The last Rogue model was not good in quality wise, but this is just my personal thought. So for I am truly loving Rogue and only time will tell if this is good quality crossover. Thanks for the good review .

I got my Rogue about 3 months ago. I find that it has plenty of power and is very comfortable, it also is quite while driving it. I feel that it has more options and is cheaper than many of it's competitors. Some people are bothered by the transmission but I'm not. It has plenty of room and I am getting about 25 mpg, 95% of my driving is within the city. I recently did a 4 hour trip and average about 31 mpg. I am happy with my purchase and I recommend it.

Excellent review, thanks so much. I've had an '09 and '12 Rogue and will be picking up my 3rd (2015) Rogue SL in they next month. A lot of miles and only one non-maintenance trip to the dealership for a recall on the '09 CVT which was just a computer reprogram. Other than that they have been mechanically perfect and those fuel mileage estimates Alex gave are right on the money. Excellent, trouble free vehicles. Last winter in Minnesota we saw one of the worst winters in history and the Rogue did great in the snow and ice. I passed more than one full sized 4x4 pick up on hills they couldn't get up. The only other SUV in this class I would consider is the Rav 4 but I put that far below the Rogue.

Nine mos. ago test drove at dealers the Mazda CX5, the Ford Escape and the '14 Rogue. All good cars. In the end the wife and I found the Nissan SL FWD the best compromise and after putting 10,000 mi. on it we're happy with the choice. This is an incredibly good all-around car. Its high points are looks, fit and finish, comfort, economy, ride, ergonomics and practicality; heck, it has all the bells and whistles of a Lexus RX at thousands less. Sure, it could use another 10HP and the Bluetooth voice recognition system often disappoints. But all in all, this is an all-around winner, delivering a great bang for the buck.

Agree completely. I've had the Escape SEL 2L for a little over a year and we bought the Rogue SL for my wife a couple months ago. The 2L turbo (Ecoboost) is peppier, but the Rogue is, all around, a nicer vehicle.

great spot on review. I purchased this car in april and have no regrets. Got it in midnight jade exterior and beige leather interior. The leather is a bit warm in the summer ( would like a cooling seat option offered) a fault is the placement of the antenna on top. i wish it had a hinge for bending down when you are transporting items such as paddle boards. yes it can be unscrewed and removed. (concerns about theft, easy removal) the storage area is quite ample and loved your review of all the positioning parts for luggage sizes.

Alex, this was a GREAT REVIEW of the new 2015 Nissan Rouge. I have a 2012 Rouge SL-AWD fully loaded and I really like that SUV the way it drives and handles, the only thing that disappointed me was the gas mileage so I am glad to hear that the mileage has greatly improved. As always - a good review! The only thing I didn't catch here is the noise level. To me this is rather important, especially on long trips. I agree with the comments that diesel options for most vehicles in the US would make sense. The fuel economy is drastically improved and the sentiment towards diesel is no longer prohibitively bad.

What a fantastic review, Alex. Best car reviews I have ever seen on any media. Thanks for doing it. I'm currently evaluating small/compact SUV segment and right now have Forester, RAV4, CRV and Nissan Rogue on my shopping list. Elsewhere when I was reading customer reviews on the Rogue, I saw decent number of people complaining about transmission failures on the Rogue (2014 and 2015 version). Thats bothering me now. Rogue seems to have all the things I'm looking for but reliability concerns me (as compared to a RAV4 or CRV). I haven't checked out your reviews on the other small SUV's, let me do that now.

I live in Iowa and I am cross shopping 2015 Forester Sport, Rogue SL, and CR-V ?. I know how well the 214 Forester drives, excellent and they have changed nothing in the drive train. It is also extremely reliable and performs superbly on ice and snow. Testing all at top of their line. Test drive Rogue SL, it was just slightly less than the Forester on performance. It's interior is fantastic, very roomy, seats are a bit more comfortable,and electronics better. Forester gas mileage is better. Will test CR-V tonight, it has 15 more horsepower and is smaller.

Thank you so much for this excellent review. Like many here, I have test driven the Rogue, the CX5 and the Escape, trying to decide what to get. For me the Rogue has the best look inside out, with the tech options I want, but my one concern has been the CVT. Actually, when I drove it, I did not see or feel anything wrong with it. I am more interested in comfort and fuel efficiency than power (or I would by a sports car and be done with it :-). This review has helped, and as I read more about the CVT reliability,I am less concerned. Overall, I agree the Rogue offers the best "package".

Alex, First off,, I Personally want to THANK YOU for ""YOUR"" Videos. You give such Detailed Explanations of the features on all the autos you review. It Must take a lot of your time and effort to do all that research on each auto you review and post. SO THANKS AGAIN !! Now, If I may add a request to your review, which I believe would Help a lot of potential buyers such as myself. There are a lot of shall we say Plus to Plus sizes out there looking for a vehicle such as myself, that they would be able to fit in. As a driver, I myself am a Very Large Woman in the tummy and hips, and I need space between the front two seats. Some center consoles are very wide. Can You touch on that , as to a larger person may not be interested in a featured auto for that reason ?? Example I fit effortlessly in the Nissan Cube, But can not fit in the Chevy Cruze. Because of the placement of where the steering wheel and emergency break are located. As large as the Chevy Equinox is, I fit in it, but I am snug in the drivers seat, I fit in the Kia Soul but am snug. The headroom on the Kia Optima is Low and the window seems almost chopped, not tall like the soul. Just a few examples . Thanks for your time. : )

Hi Alex, First of all, I love your reviews. Great level of detail! I am trying to decide between a fully loaded 2015 Nissan Rouge SL and a fully loaded 2014 Toyota Rav 4 Limited. If I were to base my decision solely on looks, I would choose the Rouge hands down. The interior is beautiful and much nicer compared to the Rav 4, which I find to be cheap looking. I think the exterior of the Rogue is nicer too. However, this purchase is a big investment for me, as I am looking for a vehicle that I can literally drive until the wheels come off. I know Toyota wins in terms of reliability and reputation. And I gotta admit, I am concerned about the reliability of the CVT in the Rouge. Performance wise, I am looking for the best option for city driving and parking in small spaces. I will also be taking this car into the mountains for ski season, so AWD is a must. Kids/child safety is not an issue, and I am not interested in the third row seat option of the Rouge. My heart is telling me to go with the Rouge but my head is telling me to go with the Rav 4. If I could take the engine and transmission of the Rav 4 combined with the body of the Rouge, it would be my dream car! What are your thoughts? Can you please advise?

I also found it very helpful when you compare it to CRV, Mazda and Jeep as it's good to know what other models have to offer. Sounds like a great crossover overall. Just a few strikes against it in my eyes: 1. "Tough schoolboy" styling. 2. Still sub-optimal fuel efficiency. Put a 2l TDI in, and it will go away up. Add a stick, and the fun factor will go way up, too. 3. It's a Nissan (questionable reliability).

***** Sad but true. The cost of diesel is beyond the actual cost of the engine it also must include emissions testing and certification, spare parts inventory, training for service techs, dealers, etc. With the addition of urea treatment and the cost of diesel it would be a very long time before it made any cash. Mazda is really the only company selling manuals in any volume because they play to that segment of the market but even they admit that it loses money and the take rate is very low.
@AAutoBuyersGuide

***** There's also a difference in the way we refine petroleum. We favor a different process in N. America that produces more gasoline than diesel. This is of course a self fulfilling prophesy that we favor a process that makes more diesel therefore we have "less" around. In truth if diesels suddenly took off in sales you can bet that companies would rapidly adjust production to meet the demand because they would make more money. While diesels are an increasing share of the sales mix in the USA in all likelihood they are going to continue to be a niche market. Many companies (like Volvo) are resisting bringing diesels to the USA even though they would likely meet the latest California emissions because of the overall expense of training, parts logistics and a claim that dealer mechanics don't like working on them (not sure if I completely buy that last one). It's all an economics game in the end. If the market demanded more diesels you can bet we'd see more. The only real move here is in the RAM 1500's sales where diesels seem to be selling like hotcakes. (A much lower percentage of Grand Cherokees are being sold as diesels likely due to the demographics). GM did imply that their logic for bringing their small diesel to the Canyon was based on initial interest of the RAM and GM and Ford have both said that they are basically letting RAM test the public interest and will have a diesel if RAM buyers continue to buy the diesel. That demographic is much more likely to pay the cost of a diesel "upgrade" however and it seems there is much less appetite in passenger cars and crossovers.

I am not buying the urea problem. Only larger diesel engines require it. VW's 2l TDI does not require it. I can't imagine other companies can't figure out how to do that.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
There was a change and sadly the Jetta (and all other small VW engines) now uses urea injection as well. I think it was a 2012 model year change. This is supposedly what is tripping Mazda up, they vowed the Mazda6 would not have urea injection but there have been some issues in getting there. While I agree that it is possible to meet the emissions without it I have a feeling it's just easier for them to design it in.

I'm heavily considering the purchase of a 2015 Rogue SV. My intention is to use my new vehicle to travel across the United States -- especially through mountainous areas like the Appalachian Mountains and higher elevations out west. I've test driven the Rogue already and was impressed with the "get-up-and-go" factor. Combined with the large cargo area and great fuel economy, the Rogue is one of my top choices. In your expert opinion, would the Rogue be sufficient for higher/steep elevation driving? I believe it would, but I am eager to hear your opinion. Thanks for a comprehensive video!

Yes, the CVT really helps in this area. Much like the new CVT in the CR-V, the Rogue is feels much more capable when hill climbing because it always has the right ratio for the situation.

Had a 2013 Nissan Rogue as a loaner for a weekend while my car was being serviced. Not that I had any preconceived opinions about it so there were no inert bias to manage. While not diving into all the nuances of why I didn't like it, let's just say it's handing was nervously annoying. The gas mileage wasn't great either. The Rouge isn't as large as my 5 series and has a smaller engine. But driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco in the Bimmer requires one stop to refuel depending speed. The Rogue required two stops while traveling much slower than I do in my 5. The ride was uncomfortable in the back and the materials felt substandard. I hope they did a better job this go around because first impressions matter.

I rather like the Rogue (especially the white interior - it's just a nice place to sit), but I do have a couple thoughts on some areas for improvement. 1) I'm more of a gear-head, so I would prefer a normal tranny if it didn't kill mileage too much. CVTs freak me out as I can never tell if it's slipping or not. 2) A turbo version might be handy - especially if you could drop the displacement a bit. 3) I would really like a bit of towing capability. Nothing too crazy; maybe 4000 lbs or so. Heck, my 20 year old minivan with 151hp new is rated at 5000lbs. it can't be that hard to add a towing package. 4) If they've got leather seats, they've gotta be cooled too (not just ventilated). I hate non-cooled leather seats. All in all, it's a pretty solid vehicle, but I think there's still room for improvement.

Alex, loved the video very thorough and well-done. I'm in the market for a crossover now and trying to decide between a new Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring or Nissan Rogue SL. Which would you pick for a long term everyday vehicle for a small family? Main priority is reliability, safety, and performance. Thanks.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
Mazda and Nissan are really on equal footing when it comes to reliability. Both score well in the latest crash tests (when looking at the Nissan, be sure to look at the new Rogue's scores vs the older ones) and the CX-5 is the better handling vehicle. Personally the infotainment system in the CX-5 is a non-starter for me (you can see my thoughts on that in the Mazda6 video on my channel), the Rogue also has a 7-seat option which I find very useful. I don't often need it and the 6th and 7th seats aren't very large but I would rather have them than not. I'd pick the Rogue.

Awesome. Finally your review of the Rogue. I have seen all the reviews for the 2014 Rogue but I was waiting for your review. Very detailed and I was particularly wanted to get your opinion on the CVT. Thanks In many of the reviews they talk about the lack of power. Is it really an issue when we have 5 people in the Rogue? Also waiting for your review on the CX5 as I am still deciding to go for the Rogue or CX5
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
Hopefully I will have the CX-5 by the end of the summer. In a nut shell it depends on what you're looking for in a crossover. The CX-5 is the handling champ in this segment but you do give up on interior volume, the optional 3rd row, the CX-5 is also a little more expensive to similarly equip and the infotainment system is painful. (Checkout my Mazda6 review for my thought on the infotainment unit). I assume Mazda will refresh the CX-5 soon with the new radios out of the Mazda3 (which has one of the best units in the industry) but I haven't even heard rumors about that yet.

Alex on Autos Thank you for your response. I am leaning a bit towards the Rogue, but what is your opinion on the Rogue's power with 170HP. Do you think it is an issue when driving with 5 adults and luggage?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
Dee Goo I didn't think it was a problem (most 4-cylinder crossovers are about the same weight with around 170HP) obviously if you want more power you'll need to get somehting else since this is the only engine on offer, but I never had a problem merging or going up hill. Passing, especially passing up hill might be an issue, but it's no different than the RAV4, CR-V, or 4-cylinder versions of the Cherokee, Equinox, etc.

Since the Altima and this car have the same engine and trans, I would enjoy a comparison of the two, especially as MPG leaders. As usual, your videos are the most comprehensive and informative. I can't subjectively agree or disagree on the "value" of the handling of the CX5 v the Subaru's 4 whl drive, or the Rogue's MPG. I haven't test driven them.

+Michael Delaney I own a Forester 2.5i and recently spent a week driving the Rogue. The gas mileage is about same but Rogue is better on longer highway trips. Forester feels lot more agile and more responsive with far better CVT transmission. Visibility goes to Subaru. Rogue is a better choice if you spend a lot of time on freeways.

I was contemplating between Rogue vs CX5, but finally I went for 2016 Rogue for the reasons of roomy space/cargo and soft suspension. When test driving CX5, I purposely drove over bumps and the suspension felt awful. One thing I just realized, most if not all of the features on 2016 Rogue are the same as those in this review.

***** The car feels good. Suspension is great. I often drive over holes and cracked surfaces on purpose just to make myself feel good that I chose the right car :D and my wife does agree. Car is very roomy to the point that I think this is too much space for what I was looking for. Steering is smooth enough for me. I'm skinny 145ish lbs. That means little effort is needed. Braking is good, but you'll feel the weight when doing emergency braking. I've driving on eco mode ever since I got the car, I got average 24-26 mpg combined on average days with some traffic jam, 30ish mpg on good days with light traffic. I spend around $30/week to drive 300-350 miles. The normal driving mode gives you enough power. One time I felt the car jumped when I suddenly accelerating. So, power isn't too big of an issue for me. One thing that I think could be better is visibility on the sides. Somehow the blindspot is kinda big but I've got used to it by now. I got the car in Apr 2016.

If you knew that you would have to spend an additional 25% of the original price to correct a defective product, would you buy it? Such is my case with Nissan. In 2008, my wife and I bought a Nissan Altima at approximately $20K. Last week, the “check engine light” came on. I took it to the dealership and was informed that the CVT transmission needs to be replaced at an estimated cost of almost $5K. I also found out that Nissan CVT has been problematic resulting in Nissan’s decision to extend the warranty from 5 year/60,000 miles to 10 years/120,000 miles. My CVT transmission broke down at 123K. I contacted Nissan and opened a case (#197800-86). Nissan Consumer affairs called me back and informed me that they will NOT cover the cost of repairing the defective transmission. As a long-term Nissan customer, I am very angry and disappointed with Nissan’s decision and its failure to take responsibility for its defective product. It is clear that the arbitrary 10 year/120,000 mile warranty extension, while designed to minimize risk for Nissan, does nothing help a consumer who faultlessly put their trust in Nissan by buying the product. As an Engineer, I have worked on a variety of highly complex products and understand that product defects do occur. As such, I do not fault Nissan for the defects since it was not life-threatening to me and my family. What perplexes me, is the unwillingness and patent inability to accept responsibility for the defective transmission, which per Nissan dealership’s estimate, will cost approximately $5K to repair (25% of the original purchase price of the car). Which brings me back to the original question: If you knew that you would have to spend an additional 25% of the price to correct a defective, would you buy it? As one who has put his faith in the Nissan brand and the integrity of it leadership, it is my hope that the initial decision not to take responsibility for the defective CVT and the manner in which I have been treated by Nissan is aberration. I hope Nissan will reverse course and take responsibility for the repair of the defective CVT Transmission. Human decency calls for such an action and it is my hope that Nissan will reverse course and do the right thing as expected by a decent company such as yours.

Carlos Pereira The Rogue is smoother out on the road, has better mileage and a nicer interior. The Subaru has an AWD system that feels more sure footed in slippery conditions. In terms of reliability they are about equal, Nissan has had some minor transmission issues (which they say are resolved) but Subaru has long had issues with head gaskets, oil leaks and a few transmission troubles with their CVT (which they also say are fixed) The generally are about equal when it comes to reliability.
