Damn this give me hope and want to say thanks for having such a Thorough video. I So many car issues I'll never run into but when my friends do I give them tons of info but never wag finger the problem . I just tell them the different parts of cars and what connects to each other , what do each thing does or reads or reacts to and what speaks to each other or combine in operations . These videos allow me to relay the right info to people to find issue without knowing the issue and make them feel at ease that concise critical thinking and logical investigation will lead to positive results . And that I give them confidence that most people don't even really school in the industry and the median mechanic may be adept in like 10 cars and maybe only 1 or 2 modern ones I tell people having a mechanic who specifically looks at your car every 2 months doing and oil change and do tranny or coolant change every year and suspension fixes every 1.5 and brake work clean , connector clean , and top off / filter checks every 6 months . Doing it with mech , some months you can skip and do it on your own. But gaining the confidence of doing the work is best as you are with the car all the time , so you have the best chance of diagnosing over any other mechanic regardless of talent , unless you okay paying thousands while someone hurries and tries to figure out your car they never saw before. . These videos show, If you know your car you will get to the bottom of issue faster, and a dedicated repairmen would cement figuring out problems. even this problem may not be he same for everyone and maybe you may end up at stealership but they should be last gesture and you have exhausted your intellectual circle .. with Scanner Danner and OldskoolFunk around you will never have enough information for your vehicle issues.

Tip: When turbo bearing failure occurs, it usually damages the oil seals. If the compressor side is leaking, it will send oil mist to the intake / throttle body. If there is any oil in the pressure tube, TPS is likely dirty. Even with intercooled engines, the oli mist might go through the intercooler. And it is an good idea to take out the intercooler, pour some solvent in to it and shake it clean. Oil in there will gather the tiny particles getting through the air cleaner, and intercooler start losing it's ability to cool the air.

This is a good tip, thank you!

hey Janne. thanks for this tip. I just cleaned the throttle body. I had a P110. this cleared the code, but I did noticed that I have a little oil in the air intake hose connecting to the throttle body. I have a couple of questions. 1. what cleaner should I use to clean the intercooler. 2. any other action that I need to take on the turbo? I have 177,777 miles on it. Thanks!
@jannepo4 жыл бұрын
@@calebhendricks1428 small amount of oil with 180k used turbo is normal, but you get best picture about the amount from the bottom of the intercooler. If there is a lot of accumulated oil, turbo bearings / seals might be soon needed. If you are careful with fire & spark, 1 liter of gasoline and thorough shaking, repeated three times, works for me. Otherwise use diesel. You get best results with larger amount of liquid. Gallon of brake cleaner works too, but is more expensive.

I just went through this on my wifes 92 xj, why she loves that pile is a mystery. Problems starting and idling, thought I had checked her TB, but when I got the airbox off was shocked it even started because it was so dirty. Took close to an hr to get it clean, that's how bad it was. Starts right up now, I love a cost free fix. More mad at myself for not staying on top of her car, luckily, she doesn't know that, lol. All's well that ends well. Great video. Don't let this happen to you, check your throttle body when you change your oil, is my new moto and way to remember.

I had one of those cars with a bad turbo about a year ago also. I think there was 30.000 kl on the oil and there wasn't much in it. The top end was full of sludge. I cleaned it up the best i could and replaced the turbo and oil return line as it was plugged up solid. We told her to return for another oil change in 2 months. She never did come back. Well done again guys.

I have a 2016 Chevy Cruze LS. Like most of you, I was dealing with the engine light on and I finally found the fix for code P1101. So after replacing the air filter and I also put in a new MAF sensor. I then did a smoke test and nothing. I finally fix it by cleaning the throttle body. I spent $6.00 for the cleaner. After an hour I hop into the car and just like that. The engine light is off. Now it doesn’t take much to get a dirty throttle body. My car had 60,000 miles on it. This was going on 3 months with the engine light on. I would never take my car to the dealership. So happy and I hope this can help one person out there

I do my own work and have learned a lot of the relationship between good airflow and the function of the parts involved especially because it's a turbo. This video confirmed some of my own theory. Always good to know you're doing it right especially by someone with your skills to back it up. Thanks!!!

Great video Paul and Caleb and very good info. I think that the myth of losing a finger in a throttle body are not from the force of the throttle body motor but by the natural reaction to pulling your finger out once it is clamped down causing the real damage. Thank you so much for showing these videos and showing others that caution needs to be taken when dealing with these type of units. Take care and have a great day.

Great video! I ran into a similar problem on a 2007 Pontiac G6 2.4L, normal aspiration. It had 150K miles. The throttle body had never been cleaned, because there is nothing in the owner's manual that says you need to do it. But, it was so gunked up that it eventually threw a code because the required computer compensation to idle correctly was too high. Cleaned the throttle body, and it started idling at 3200 rpm! Yikes, I guess I should have cleaned it a LONG time ago. I had no bidirectional scan tool to reset the idle, so I just had to drive it to get it to re-learn by itself. I've run a full GM drive cycle days ago, which helped, but it still isn't back to normal, though it is slowly re-learning. 15 years of neglect will do that. This incident well illustrates how efficiently the ECU can compensate for minor mechanical issues, but there is a limit to what it can do. It also well demonstrates the inadequacies of the GM recommended service schedule. Less required maintenance looks good to potential new car owners. GM doesn't much care what happens after the 100K mile warranty expires, because they want to sell you a new car. In retrospect it would have been a good idea to slowly spray a can of Seafoam intake cleaner in there every year or two.

Great video! Proof right here that experience is HUGE in this industry - I'd have been second-guessing myself with the changing trim numbers, thinking an air leak went away because it got warm. No question on the high Idle Airflow Compensation number, but I still wouldn't have believed the fix was as simple as a TB cleaning, had all those numbers presented themselves to me. I definitely would've cleaned the TB, so I may have figured it out eventually! Without your channels, I'd have completely given up on this electronic stuff by now - it was so frustrating before! Now I can at least get through it, and eventually find the fix - the speed is slow to come, but I'll get there some day, lol. That's on me - nothing to do with your teaching! That's the price I'm paying for trying to live like a 80's rock star in my teens, I guess. 😉 I could definitely fix that nice Cadillac in Pete's lot, though! Your fuel trim may have been reading high because of the ECM commanding the purge solenoid on. In the data list there should be a PID called ''short term fuel trim test average" and it basically calculates the fuel trim without the purge solenoid input. Something to consider next time you're checking out fuel trims.

Checked all fuses and relays. The check engine light is never on even though the key is in ON position. OBD II gave linking error. What is your first thought? Is ECM bad most likely? Thank you, Sir.

Thank you for the hint. I checked all sensors I could find under the hood. There was at least one wire with 5v for each sensor. Does this mean that the ECU is good? I think I'm done with this dead car.

I have a 2014 chevy impala lt 2.5. I was told u could disconnect the battery, then remove the throttle body, clean it, the reconnect it and the computer will learn the throttle body. Have u heard of this?
@frankd.brennan65204 жыл бұрын
I've seen and heard over the years that you should disconnect the negative on the battery for safety? I know it has a lot of things associated with the battery nowadays, and I noticed that you didn't do that. Anyway was just wondering
@ScannerDanner4 жыл бұрын
I never disconnect the battery unless I am doing something with an airbag system or replacing a starter or alternator.

Cool video. I have a question, How do you open the throttle body? I mean you open the gate but I dont know How. Thank you
@ScannerDanner5 жыл бұрын
I used a scan tool to do it in this video
@ScannerDanner5 жыл бұрын
I've done many manually too but it's not really recommended. Just make sure you unplug the throttle body electrical connector when you do it. Also you may not have the ability without a proper scan tool to relearn the idle. Not trying to scare you away from doing it, but I would NOT attempt to do it unless you are experiencing a decel stalling problem. One that runs perfect if you foot is on the gas pedal.

ScannerDanner I’ve had cleaned lots and finally had a p0507 with a super high idle and it was horrible and I couldn’t get back to normal and finally went and bought a Autel scan tool and was able to do a throttle body idle relearn and everything was fixed after that.
