In today's episode - we take advantage of that space we cleared out behind the bumper - and install a Tru Cool transmission cooler!
I wanted a bolt in transmission cooler that was also bigger then stock. With more transmission mods coming - I wanted the biggest cooler that I could fit.

also if your going to by the OEM external cooler, you really only need the bracket that holds it and the two lines on the left, the cooler and the inlet line which connects to the radiator from the external cooler and the line which connects to the external cooler, there's no need to buy everything listed, but then again ,you can buy just the thermostat block and then add your own size external cooler ,but remember this all the transmission lines going to the radiator must be connected to the external cooler and also replace the thermostat for the radiator, to a lower tempo instead of the factory 86/ 90 degree, to a lower temp around 71 to 76 degree c thermostat. :)

Thanks for posting! this was helpful for me to find the correct fittings. When looking at the stock transmission cooler, is the right side the feed (hot) and the left the exit back to the transmission (cold)? I bought a B&M cooler and it suggests running it in series with the stock cooler. So I planned to leave the lower line on the distribution block connected to the right port on the stock cooler. Then I will come out of the exit of the stock cooler (left) and into the feed of the B&M cooler. Then the exit of the B&M will run back to the top port on the distribution block. I traced the lines and think that makes sense.

Looking back at the video - and honestly I'm not sure. I think if you take the distribution block out - the end that has the thermostatic switch on it should be the input.

Hey man love the video I actually did the same thing to my ss but I look at my ngauge my trans temps are still hitting 187-190. Just wondering what your trans temps read

I haven't been monitoring my trans temps. So I couldn't give you a before and after #. Only other thing you could do is get the Twisted Wrenches grill that really opens the front up.

the transmission is cooled by the radiator coolant, you can reduce the transmission oil temp by either a external coolers and also putting in a lower temp radiator thermostat, instead of the 90 degree C get a 71 degree c thermostat, that way the oil is a little cooler and you can by aftermarket temp or thermos controlled transmission cooler set ups, just like the engine oil coolers which also run on thermostat control?

Dind't want one with a cold weather bypass? I understand the 6l80 runs hot, but I wonder if too cold is bad. I am sure it has an optimum temperature. I don't think the stock distro block has a valve. How would that valve be replaced if it was inside?

Hello Owen - I do not live in a cold weather climate. NC does get an occasional snow - but the car will never seen snow or salt - as I have my Duramax. So it's not something I need to worry about.

When you installed the trans cooler and the Camaro pan, how much more fluid did you have to install over stock requirements and does the bigger tru-cool affect how much trans fluid is needed ?
@bonecrrusherSS
@bonecrrusherSS 5 ай бұрын
Deeper pan and bigger cooler will increase capacity. I filled it up until the trans dip stick read full. You could always add another quart of fluid and run it like that.

What dipstick do you have? I’m about to do this mod on my 6.2 swapped caprice PPV, but I’m debating on bypassing the distribution block completely and just running 6AN braided lines from the trans straight to the cooler and vice versa, since I’m planning to ditching the stock radiator for a Cold case soon

Hello I know this video is old but can you please respond? I also have an SS and I don’t know why the car feels so hot all around, everything is fine but does this mean I have to upgrade my radiator & trans cooler?
@bonecrrusherSS
@bonecrrusherSS 11 ай бұрын
I only upgraded the trans cooler because I was doing the zl1 torque convertor - I probably wouldn't have touched it. Is your car over heating? Is the upper radiator hose collapsed?

@@bonecrrusherSS Mate you should have put a temp sensor on the eternal trans cooler, that way you will know what the oil temp is and also have a sensor on the transmission as well, that way you can see what the differences are, most auto tans coolers run at the same temp the radiator coolant is set to run at or the thermostat so dropping the temp is better for the transmission instead of 90 degrees, have 78 Degrees / C degree thermostat, which as you have supercharged yours, its good insurance for both the transmission and also a engine oil cooler as well will help the engine live longer especially if your going to the drags?

@@bonecrrusherSSAlso can you please provide some photos of how the lines are connected from the back of the Radiator that lead to the inner trans cooler to go to the outer trans cooler, meaning that the image that chevy provides is only the parts listing for it, but its very confusing, in reality or you need is the factory external cooler if you want a external trans cooler, or if you want more cooling then do what you have done, which is to say you still need the transmission coolant lines from the back of the radiator and then connect them to the factory external trans cooler block which has a thermostat built into it. cheers and well done on your build or upgrade. 👌👌🦘🦘👍👍✌✌

MATE THAT IS FANTASTIC ,( DID NOTICE YOU DID NOT FILL THE EXTERNAL TRANS COOLER WITH FLUID BEFORE THE LINES ARE PUT ON AND PRIMED THE LINES AS WELL) WHAT YOU HAVE DONE, THE ONLY QUESTION I HAVE, CAN YOU STILL DO THE SAME THING IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE FACTORY TRANS COOLER YOU LIKE HAVE ALREADY FITTED, MEANING THAT I DO BELIEVE THE FACTORY BLOCK WHERE THE LINES CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER IS CONTROLLED BY TEMP, SO THAT WHEN THE RADIATOR IS UPTO TEMP THE VALVE WILL OPEN TO ALLOW THE EXTERNAL TRANS COOLER TO WORK, SO HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PUT THE SAME SET UP IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE FACTORY EXTERNAL TRANS COOLER? aLSO ITS NOT WORTH HAVING A EXTERNAL TRANS COOLER UNLESS YOU HAVE SO MUCH EXTRA TORQUE GOING THROUGH THE TRANSMISSION OR YOUR DOING A LOT OF TOWING ETC.:) ITS NOT THE REV'S OR HP, BUT ITS THE TORQUE WHICH EFFECTS THE TRANSMISSION. :)
@bonecrrusherSS
@bonecrrusherSS 4 жыл бұрын
No I did not fill the transmission cooler lines prior to filling the transmission. That is why you get the transmission up to operating temp - and fill it then. The theromatstic switch will open up - and allow all of the trans fluid to go through the cooler, trans, etc. This upgrade is simply to replace the small transmission cooler with a larger one. Also I have an LSA supercharger on the car - so it is making wayyy more HP and Torque then it ever did stock.

Make sure you plug the transmission cooler lines coming out of the radiator. You would also have to remove the stock oil cooler - and route lines behind the exhaust manifold/header.

@@bonecrrusherSS but the inlet size to the factory cooler distribution block should be the same size, also the inlet lines to the block are different OD sizes compared to the aftermarket stainless lines, which could cause a problem IMO ? Still fantastic what you have done to her, mine is a 2015 SSV Holden Redline, bone stock other than rear Brembo Calipers and 360mm larger Rotors, which the series 2 redlines have as factory fitment & fitted and a KN air filter?
