Tools & Parts :
Filler Neck

CONCENTRATED Antifreeze - See NOTES & CAUTIONS below.
amzn.to/3NYaCvl
Hose Clamp Pliers
amzn.to/3PBE6R5
** NOTES & CAUTIONS ** :
1) 10 Year P/N 68163848AB MS-12106. Check that container is sealed & has correct part number. Dilute with DISTILLED Water per label on back of jug.
2) I live in a warm climate so 50% / 50% dilution works fine for me. In colder climates dilution ratio can be different (e.g. 60% / 40% or 70% / 30%). See the table on back of jug.
3) Today there are multiple antifreeze types & they are NOT all compatible. If a cooling system has been switched over to another NON-compatible type of coolant, problems could result. The system would have to be completely rinsed out with water to eliminate all traces of the old incompatible coolant.

Wanted to say a big thank you to you today. I realize this video is over a year old, but because of you I was able to fix this issue on a 2013 avenger today. Mine blew on the high side in almost the same spot as yours in the driveway and your video gave me the knowledge and confidence to fix this on my own without having to get it towed off to a repair shop.

4 years later and you've given this Avenger owner enough info to go ahead and replace this myself. Had the same exact break within the same exact hose. Had the same experience too, about a mile from home, thought it couldn't be that serious maybe the thermo acting up again but nope.

For two weeks, my wife's 2015 Dodge Journey was losing coolant; I refill her reservoir once a week. At first, I thought the leak was a linear crack in the T-filler neck, but when I tried to take a closer look, the part came into pieces. Lucky me, today I found your video went online and got the part. You save a couple of hundred dollars. Thanks

Thanks for commenting. I'm glad this helped you ! Note there are other plastic parts in the cooling system like the thermostat housing. This 2.4L engine has two thermostats both of which are in the same plastic housing. I also plan on changing this plastic housing along w/ the two thermostats. I'm also gonna change upper & lower radiator hoses & the heater hoses. Maybe this is overkill ($$$) but I like to have reliability. Also the inlet & outlet pipes on the radiator are plastic.....

I'm glad it helped !! Be warned however there are other plastic parts in the cooling system that may also break over time. Specifically I'm referring to the Plastic Thermostat Housing. Within the last year I changed the complete Plastic Thermostat Housing, the two Thermostats, Upper & Lower Radiator Hoses and the two Heater Hoses. My car was over 8 years old at the time & I felt it was time to do that. I'm glad I did it for peace of mind. None of those broke, however I think these Plastic & Rubber parts should be changed at the 6 to 8 year mark. The 2.4L Dual VVT engine has 2 Thermostats (most cars have just 1 Thermostat). Also my Radiator did develop a leak (Hairline Crack). Thankfully I saw evidence of that in my driveway. It was a slow leak & I drove it for approx 10 days until I figured out what was going on (City Driving only). I have a short video on that Radiator leak. I think the Avenger 4 Cylinder are good cars, but you have to keep a Very Proactive Eye on this cooling system. I feel that w/ my new Cooling System parts, it's good for another 5 years of service.

Make sure the rest of your Cooling System is in GOOD working order. By this I mean : 1) make sure Upper & Lower Radiator Hoses are still good by Squeezing them & making sure they are NOT Soft in spots & also inspect for bulges. Soft spots & bulges are weak points & the hose will eventually burst here. Check both of the heater core hoses too. Do this w/ a cold engine to avoid burns. 2) Check that Radiator Cooling fans are operating when a) the A/C is turned on full blast OR b) the engine reaches operating temperature & the engine computer turns on the fans. Dangerous : DO NOT stick your hands in the fans. Hold your hand behind fans & check for a breeze. 3) Check radiator efficiency (not clogged) by the temperature difference between inlet & outlet being approximately 80 degrees F apart when thermostat fully open. Use a laser temperature gun to check inlet & outlet temperatures. Clog may indicate radiator needs replacing or at least removal of debris bugs, leaves, dirt, etc that is blocking airflow. 4) make sure thermostats are operating properly. Unfortunately one way to do this is to take them out of the car & put them in hot antifreeze/water mix & verify they open when exposed to their trigger temperature. There are two thermostats in this car : 2014 Avenger 170 Degree Fahrenheit Water Inlet Thermostat and 2014 Avenger 203 Fahrenheit Degree Pass Thru Cylinder Head Thermostat. This procedure is dangerous & I recommend to have a professional do it. 5) Radiator cap pressure test. Test it Cold with special pressure test equipment. Pump up PSI to just over the cap PSI rating. The cap valve should release at its rated PSI. If it doesn't then replace the cap. 6) replace Serpentine belt if it has chunks missing or if it has surface cracks. 7) Check all Serpentine belt IDLER pulleys. Determine by removing Serpentine belt & spinning idler pulleys by hand. "Gritty" sounding idler pulleys or idler pulleys that do NOT spin freely should be replaced. A mechanics stethoscope can also be used for this, but it may be dangerous (let a professional do it). Note I would also consider the A/C pulley to be an idler pulley when the A/C clutch is OFF. 7) Verify Serpentine belt tensioner is working properly. If pulley is "Gritty" when spinning it or it does NOT spin freely, then change the tensioner. I plan on changing mine at around 100,000 miles just for the heck of it. I suggest having a GOOD Radiator shop or TRUSTED Professional mechanic do all of this work for you.

That filler neck is actually for an 00-04 dodge Dakota/Durango. But you shouldn't have any problems with it since the barb fitting is the same size as the hose. It'd also be a good idea to get a new radiator cap if thats never been replaced.

I stopped to help a homeless fellow on the side of the road collecting cans. Next thing I knew I heard water pouring out from my car. Ran and shut it off opened the hood and same issue. I'm very lucky I wasn't driving cause I was an hour away from home and would not be able to afford coolant or a replacement part. Can you believe it happened right in front of a small engine mechanics business. They hooked me up with a 1 and 3/4 inch metal pipe and some hose clamps and I was able to rig it to work so I could get home

This exact thing happened to me yesterday, I also have a 2014 dodge avenger. I was on my way to church, driving 65 on the bypass, didn't even get a mile at that speed when coolant started spraying from under my hood and my temp shot to H, thankfully I pulled over and cut the engine, hopefully before it did any real damage. The entire connector just crumbled when trying to fit the hose back on. I was a little shocked. So we had to have the car towed back to our place and he'll be going to advance today to pick up the T filler neck replacement. This video was SUPER helpful so thank you so much. First time I've found a video that was identical to my car and situation. I'm not that great with car stuff, (lol) so how do I know if the throttle body was affected?

On the Speedometer there are many warning & status lights. They all momentarily light when you start your engine. The throttle body light is near the center just to the right of the BRAKE light. If it stays on there is a problem.

Great video, man. My wife's issue is completely identical to yours with her 2011 Chrysler 200. Unfortunately my wife was across town when her t-filler ruptured and insurance would only cover towing it to the nearest repair shop within 5 miles and that repair shop just left us a voicemail claiming it'd be $350 to fix. Which seems like utter bullcrap for a $24 part I could pick up from AutoZone. Seems like they're trying to do a lot more than needed or just plain trying to rip my wife off. And your video will at least allow me to talk informatively on the subject when I call them back and will hopefully prevent us from getting ripped off.
@bradleytrim7280
@bradleytrim7280 4 жыл бұрын
Update. You saved me $425. The repair shop was trying to push us into a cooling system pressure test, replacement of ALL the hoses, and a coolant fluid exchange for a grand total of $478. Instead, I spent $53 at AutoZone on the coolant filler neck, a radiator cap, and a gallon of coolant. Was able to complete the repairs in the next-door parking lot within 15 minutes. The lady at the repair shop's front desk was incredibly rude when I refused service as well. So glad I found your video!
@AvengerAdventure
@AvengerAdventure 4 жыл бұрын
@@bradleytrim7280 WARNING WARNING. Maybe they were looking out for you at that shop. Since I changed my filler neck, my coolant temp has been running HIGH when I'm idling at a standstill (i.e. spending 10 minutes at a drive thru or stopped at a red light at an intersection). The temp needle on the dash will ride higher than normal under those circumstances. I've also been monitoring my coolant temperature w/ a OBD II Bluetooth reader. Before the temp gets over 220 degrees F, I turn on the heat in the car full blast to help out the cooling system. For $300 I bought all new radiator hoses & heater cores hoses, new thermostats (there are 2 of them) and a new thermostat housing (plastic). All the parts are Chrysler OEM. Dealer wanted $500, but I found them online for $300. I've just been to lazy to install the parts. I suspect I have a thermostat that's not operating properly or worse a clogged radiator. Anyway if you're able yourself, I'd recommend thoroughly checking out you cooling system OR have a GOOD REPUTABLE radiator shop do it for you. About 6 weeks to 2 months before my T-Filler neck blew out I did notice my coolant dash gauge was riding a little higher than normal. But I ignored it. I think the softness of the old T-Filler neck plastic along w/ the coolant temp running a little high caused the T-Filler neck to burst. Of course, the soft T-Filler neck plastic would have eventually burst anyway. So the WARNING is you're not done yet ! Do thoroughly check your cooling system or have it checked by a PROFESSIONAL. Thanks for your comments.

This just happened to my journey. before that it was the t-fitting for the heater core. This is such a cheap material. Both parts looked like wood fiber board material when I removed it. Every manufacturer out there is going with the same stuff. I ended up using brass t-fitting to mend the heater hose. Unfortunately you can't do that with filler neck.

So, looks like the only real difference in the parts was the orientation of that sticking out part of the bracket bottom. Did you use that new clamp? If not, how did you get it into the metal piece to have it installed correctly? I need to fix my dodge journey and mine is a slow leak, thank God! I just put a new throttle body on mine already. So after you replaced it you added coolent with the car on?
@AvengerAdventure
@AvengerAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
After you replace the T-Filler Neck then fill up the cooling system before you start the car. Then start the car w/ the radiator cap off. Continue to add coolant as air comes out of the cooling system. I also turned on the heat full blast to make sure any air in the heater core gets purged out of the cooling system. I know i said in the video that I only ran the engine 4 or 5 minutes, but i ran it longer. Ideally you want the thermostats to open up so that all air gets purged out of the cooling system. I don't think i ran it longer than 10 minutes. Squeezing along the upper radiator hose w/ the radiator with the radiator cap off helps to chase air out of the cooling system too. After that I put the radiator cap back on. In the next days I did keep an eye on the coolant overflow tank to make sure it didn't go under the LOW level. If there was any residual air remaining in the cooling system, then over the next days it would suck in coolant from the overflow tank to fill the void. Also your cooling system may need a general checkout. See the notes under the "SHOW MORE" section.

The same thing happened to me when my Dodge journey did the same thing right as I showed up to the parking lot of where I work. I had no idea and no warning whatsoever. I would say this is a deliberate flaw that Dodge Chrysler is allowing. I really hate when stuff like this happens unexpectedly because it makes you think that the manufacturers are up to something sinister. Fortunately I was able to locate the part because there are parts shortages everywhere right now. I could have easily not been able to get this part and been left without a vehicle. It really makes me mad just think that the engineers and the manufacturers allow this sort of thing to happen. They could easily have put a metal part or a better quality plastic tee filler in place but of course that wouldn’t make them any money in the aftermarket of parts now would it? I could’ve gotten a similar part at AutoZone but decided to go with the OEM because they had a longer warranty. Anytime you’re dealing with OEM parts it’s always buyer beware

This just happened to me I’m at the part of needing to add the coolant to the radiator but not sure if the 50/50 is enough to add to radiator completely or I need to leave some water in radiator and then add 50/50

Yes I burped it with the cap off starting with a cold engine so I wouldn't get burned by hot coolant.

Update: That Dorman 902-305 seems to have fixed the issue for me. I installed it and let it run open to bleed the air out for about 5 minutes, now that it's back on the road I intend to run it to the shop for a full check of the system ( to be safe. )

How do you get the old one disconnected without breaking or messing up the mount
@AvengerAdventure

I gently used a pair of slip-joint pliers to squeeze the two plastic tabs on the bottom old T-Filler neck to get it to release from the metal mounting pedestal. Then I lifted the old T-Filler neck off of the mounting pedestal.

@@AvengerAdventure ended up calling the dealership for the part since they had the piece in stock, but they sold it in kits so I got to replace the hoses and the t filler, around $170 with tax. Was able to find just the piece for $7-$20 on ebay and other site but shipping was either a week or weeks long.

This just happened to mine. Of course it happened when I let my wife drive it 😒 so unfortunately I think she drove it a little further than 3/4 of a mile when she got home. Just did all the part changes and burped the system. A little weary about driving it because I dunno if the engine/water pump sustained any damage. Edit: found out it was about 2.5miles 😩

@AvengerAdventure Жыл бұрын
I hope your engine / water pump are okay !! Water pump has a plastic impeller. FYI I replaced ALL cooling system hoses, heater hoses, thermostats & PLASTIC two-piece thermostat housing about 10 months ago since my car is eight years old. I was especially glad to get the PLASTIC two-piece thermostat housing changed out !! I did that work myself with all Mopar parts approx $350.00. Keep an eye on these PLASTIC parts. Also my radiator got a hairline crack (slow leak) about 2 or 3 months ago so I had that changed by a shop (I should have done it myself since they messed up things in the process) . Cost was $200 labor + $250 radiator (NAPA radiator lifetime warranty as long as I own the car) Keep an eye on these PLASTIC parts. I did see or hear that the O-Rings on the intake manifold (at the cylinder head) can be damaged by an overheat situation. Please research this yourself. Since I don't have any more info on this....

No my engine did NOT cut off. I only ran the engine for approximately 45 seconds to 1 minute after the hose ruptured. It started up and ran smoothly immediately after I replaced the T-Filler neck, refilled the coolant & burped (the air out of) the system.

I think I used a 10 inch Channel-Lock pliers to "un-spring" the hose clamp & push it back (wear safety goggles). Then I used a small screw driver gently inserted between the rubber hose & the plastic t-filler neck to work the t-filler neck out of the rubber hose. I've since bought specialized hose clamp pliers.
