Here I show how to take the manual trans out, replace the clutch, and open the transmission to replace the OEM synchros with upgraded synchros

This was by far the best video I found for replacing the synchros in this transmission. I realized I needed to redo what I had done. I'm glad I watched before I reassembled my transmission.

Hey man - I’m about to build an buddies gearbox for his ST & it’s been so long since I ordered my shims and all I can find is the diff shim part numbers - would you mind pointing me in the right direction with the part number for the 1-4 and 5th- reverse shims?
@Rosarioworx10 ай бұрын
Figured it out - the ST diff races are the same as the lower countershafts races on the gear sets.

Out of all the people that have videos it’s nice to see someone actually checking the bearing preload. I was starting to believe it just wasn’t necessary and they knew something I didn’t. Lol.
@fixins98682 жыл бұрын
Even though people say that there is no reason to change the shim, I would not feel comfortable until I checked it for myself. Its just insurance to make myself feel better. I would guess that most people don't need to change their shim. Businesses that do the ST trans all the time probably have done enough to know you don't need to, but there might be that one trans that does need it, and those businesses just cover it with a warranty for if it happens and its just the cost of doing business. Us DiY people don't have that and its probably a good idea to check it just in case.
@christianharvey50532 жыл бұрын
@@fixins9868 oh yea I fully understand. I would do the same. While I’m in there I would want to know I did everything I could and the correct before I threw it back in the car for it to just break again. How long did you have to heat up the casing before you installed the outer bearing race?
@fixins98682 жыл бұрын
@@christianharvey5053 Not long. maybe 2 mins. You just have to be quick because the aluminum removes heat fast. Also. the shaft funnels can now be bought at jacks transmissions. So if you break them not a big deal.

You have absolutely saved my life with this video. Paid a shop to do the syncro upgrade and they botched it pretty hard. Where did you get the workshop manual 37:09? There is nothing in the ford workshop manual for the focus other than "Replace Transmission", and I've had no luck finding anything other than in your video.

Thank you so much for taking time to explain yourself in this video, I am currently in the middle of doing this project on my 18 RS. I do have one question…Where did you get the tool to pull the outer bearing race out of the bell housing?

Hello, I just have two quick questions, is the input shaft bolt also 75ft-lbs? i'm replacing the input shaft bearing also. Also is there a torque spec for the case bolts and the shifter base, or do you just tighten them using your best judgement?

Would this be the same to replace the synchros on a automatic?
@beranihull62612 жыл бұрын
Great video. In the process of replacing my synchros. I wish I had known these synchros were a common failure back when I replaced my clutch. Also, it wasn't until your video that I found out the shift fork tabs are also common to fail on these. Where did you get your shift forks from? Part number? The tabs on mine aren't damaged and don't have any cracks, but now I'm considering them too... Oh and those c-clips too

pretty much the only place to buy parts are from jacks transmission. No part number listed. They have a whole section devoted to the rs/st transmission. Parts are pricey but worth it for piece of mind. Just remember that if your gear dog teeth are messed up that means yous slider dogs are messed up as well. so you will need the whole syncho assembly as well as the gear. Fixing 2nd gear cost me about 750 dollars. Good luck!

question! will it still be safe to use the second gear with rolled over tips with new carbon synchros? or is mandatory to get a new second gear?
@fixins98682 жыл бұрын
Its not mandatory, but you might not get smooth engagement of 2nd gear. From my stand point if you are trying to make the transmission perform better why go to the length of all the work to pull the trans and upgrade the synchros and not replace 2nd gear. It would be like putting 85 octane in the st. It drives fine, but not as well. Also, if you do have rolled over dog teeth on 2nd you most likely have rolled over dogs on the slider. So you would have to replace both.

You can find them on any of the ST forums for free or there are ones you can buy for about 25 dollars.

@@fixins9868 Is there a difference between the 2? Every link on the forums keep getting blackholed. I assume the manufacturer makes their own detailed service manual, how do 3rd party service manuals like Haynes compare?

@@mrsluigi9478 Haynes are junk. Get an OEM service manual. emanualonline.com has the Focus OEM manual for about 30 dollars.

The ford service manual has a break down of the transmission in it. If you got that one, then its in there. Search for MMT6 in the pdf and you should find it.

Regarding the bearing race with the oil funnel. Where on the race do you place the pilot bearing remover with the funnel still on? Is there a lip or something for the remover to grab on to?
@fixins9868 Жыл бұрын
it will be very obvious when you have it apart. there are 2 notches you can fit a slide hammer hook under. if you do happen to break the funnel jacks transmissions sells them now.

How you know when your synchro are bad
@fixins98682 жыл бұрын
your gears will grind or it will be difficult to shift fast or shift at high RPMs. Usually the lower gears will go out like 2 or 3. They never will all go out at the same time. If 1-6 are all bad then you probably have a dragging clutch or bad release bearing, or leaking slave or master cylinder.
@casualwatson50362 жыл бұрын
You won't be able to go into that gear at all or it'll grind in with what's feel like a serious lack of power
