I have a VW and you'd be surprised how little information there is out there on the preload procedure, it's very similar but they note a .25mm preload. Our case is a little bit more difficult as we don't have the lugs that you have, so the hard way is the only way. Thank you for the video, it basically confirmed the process for me in combination with the videos I've found online.

@@TheJambo2014 I don't know that I am sorry. One of the things you can do is take out your current shim, but in a measuring shim and get your free space by adding the measuring shim to the measured free space. Subtract this number from the factory shim and it should give you a good estimate on what your preload should be.

First of all thank you for teaching us how to set bearing pre loads. Would this procedure be the same if your replacing a standard non LSD Differential bearing on a Ford Focus 2.0 tdci. Does inputshaft and output shaft bearing have pre load setting as well. If so would it also be the same procedure on setting it up? Thanks again for your help and advice 👍👌

What woud happen if you just change the bearings and seal it and send it. I just changed and sealed it and 3,000 miles no issues YET. Mountune told me "We have rebuilt hundreds and MMT6 gearboxes and have never had to change the shims from what was included in the factory build. Of course end play was measured and found to be within spec. If your's required new shims, it would be an anomaly." Jackstransmission had the same opinion too. I think I will be fine since it had low milage on it

hi! enjoyed this tremendously! good reference! however, you started with a 1.73mm shim. you replaced with a 1.65mm. would this .08mm difference, or .0031inch, effected the LSD's performance had you chosen not to replace the shim?
@fixins9868
@fixins9868 4 жыл бұрын
It probably would not effect the the performance of the LSD or what it is meant to do noticeably with daily driving. It could effect the longevity of the bearings or if you are tracking the car to where the temps are always high.

Thanks very much for this video. My only question is why use a measuring shim at all? Couldn’t you install the races without the measuring shim and do the measurements that way?
@fixins9868
@fixins9868 4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, but I think the M shim is there so that the diff carrier doesn't hit the case. If you were to use no M shim the carrier might bump against the case while measuring giving you a false reading. Everything is very tight in this case. Just my guess why you need to use an M shim.

great video my friend. let me add this..... to me this information is a bit confusing after watching your video. i purchase the quaife differential and the kit from mountune . i was curious when i read the instructions on the ford performance website and it mentioned nothing about reshiming the differential. i contacted ford performance and they said that it wasnt necessary to reshim using the kit....maybe its the brand? either way thumbs up on your informative instructions.
@fixins9868
@fixins9868 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct that Ford performance says nothing about re shimming. However, if you read the factory service manual it says that if the bearings are replaced that you should shim. Its up to you. If it is slightly too tight, it will wear in over time. If it is too loose, it will get more loose as time goes on. I wanted to know it was in spec, so I did a ll the measurements to have piece of mind.

Great video! I've been browsing videos for Focus Mk3 hatchback reverse gear grinding/jumping off but couldn't find much. That's how I found your video, you sound like quite well informed about Focus gearbox, any idea why my reverse gear jumps off/disengages off of reverse/grinds and still somehow stays in reverse sometimes? The Focus is 2011, Mk3, 150 BHP, 1600 cc, petrol, Titanium edition. Any thoughts will be much appreciated.
@fixins9868
@fixins9868 2 жыл бұрын
If its jumping out of gear that means you have one or more of these problems, worn reverse syncho, worn dog teeth on the reverse gear or reverse slider, a bent or worn pads on the reverse gear shift fork, or highly unlikely, a messed up shift tower. You can't really know until you take it all apart.

@@fixins9868 Great answer, Sir! I took it to Ford dealership and they were hesitant to open the transmission/gearbox, so they started with the gear cables/linkages, thought that gear linkages were to blame - but nothing improved upon adjusting the gear linkages. Then they focused on the shift tower (I really didn't know that it was named like that, but I guess it is the part that mounts on the transmission bell) and told me that the shift tower had some play in it, I really don't know what is the extent of the play they've mentioned. Does the shift tower have some play in it inherently or it should be all tight and snug in the shift tower?
@fixins9868
@fixins9868 2 жыл бұрын
@@zrnjan it shouldn't be tight and it shouldn't be loose if that make sense. I have never seen a shift tower go bad unless it was dropped.
@zrnjan
@zrnjan 2 жыл бұрын
@@fixins9868 Hhmmm.... I too share your opinion and I am not that convinced that the shift tower is to blame, but we'll see what the future attempts bring. I haven't seen the shift tower taken out of my car in the dealership and I can't tell what the amount of play was in it, but somehow I share your opinion that the culprit will be inside the gearbox. Anyways, I'll let them order new shift tower from the factory in Germany and replace it and we'll see how it goes. The least I can do is tell you what happenned as a sign of thank you for your time. :) Regards, man.

@FixIns Just to let you know what happened, an update. It turned out that something like a ring with teeth around its circumference and another toothed ring which slides into the inner diameter of the aforementioned ring were the cause. The inner ring had slots for three pads and the pads had three spheres in them. The spheres would then fall/click in three dents spaced 120 degrees around the first ring. I guess you would call the setup reverse gear or reverse slider when naming the rings and when naming the pads with the spheres inside them you would call that setup pads on the reverse gear shift fork. Correct me if I'm wrong. Plus a reverse synchro ring was replaced and now I don't have any issues with the reverse, the first gear still sometimes needs to be gentle with her and patient, but that doesn't bother me at all. I thought to let you know because you were somehow dragged in the situation by me, so this was a kind of a thank you because you found the time to offer me help. Regards!

Rather than use the Ford shims, can't you go to any bearing supplier and buy the correct sized shims at a far cheaper price? I got my shims from a bearing supplier when I got my Timken bearings. This was for an R53 Mini Cooper S and Quaife LSD - exactly the same gearbox as the Focus ST. You're process for preload is on point and far accurate than feeler gauges and better than people assuming it will be OK without even measuring.

@@fixins9868 I got mine at an industrial bearing supplier - the same place I got my Timken bearings. I'm in Hong Kong, so it's a bit different here. There's a whole street with about 10 bearing suppliers which just about every bearing you can think of. The shims all came from the usual bearing manufacturers and I believe different grade strength was available. I just told them the application and size and they gave me something to suit. I'm due to do another Mini LSD soon, so I'll take some photos.

@@fixins9868 Thanks, I found that the transmission clutch side of the case, the race was good and did have a preload set already with a spacer from the factory. I was limited on what was needed to redo the preload so I decided to just put in the new race only on the new gear portion of the new case and put two new bearings on each end. So it is driving fine right now, lets hope it will be fine for the long haul, which I think it will be. Both bearings I replaced had a lot play in them.

I did my first ever clutch and pressure plate install on '15 FoST. Everything went back in, Putting in the transmission was a bitch and a half - especially doing this on jack stands. I fucked up the bleeding procedure. Workshop manual states that you should PUMP OIL IN through the bleeder valve. I put a vacuum on it, and blew a seal on slave cylinder. Said fuck it and gave the car to AMMCO. They did great job, $1000 bucks to replace a 3 dollar seal inside a tranny. But car runs like a champ. Im a little jelly about your LSD. Any update on lightweight flywheel. I heard people who installed it said they regret it, because taking off takes WAY more gas. A lot of them said they would keep the dual flywheel.

That sucks, I'm sorry that happened. I've vacuum bled these before and never had them fail. So maybe you just got a bad part.
