2014 Ford Fusion Energi Titanium - Review & Test Drive

The 2014 Ford Fusion Energi is a plug-in hybrid capable of 21 purely electric miles, but also with a 2.0L gasoline engine giving the car a range of 620 miles. The 5 door sedan features a eCVT transmission which power can be delivered through by the engine, electric motor, or both, giving it a peak 195 HP combined. The car is rated for 43 mpg combined when on gasoline-only mode, and 100 MPGe when using EV mode. This features the Titanium package.

Thank you for creating a review on a car that actually gives us some useful figures and tells us as far as fuel economy figures what you actually got at least in terms of your experience and what the car's computer says versus watching all the other car reviews and the actual people who only do car views who are literally only quoting the EPA numbers and not telling you what they're actually getting as far as economy goes in those cars plus you do any more real world test than they do cuz you take it out on a fairly decent size drive as well as you do real world driving that people who would own the car would generally be doing where is most of the car of yours just so they can say that the acceleration is good in the breaking is good will be hard on the throttle usually to the floor during acceleration and they will get on the brakes pretty hard as well most of the reviews I've seen on the Ford Fusions people are saying they're getting 34 to 37 miles per gallon which is not impressive but the numbers that you have shown me or a bit more impressive but not as impressive as my 2007 Prius which I'm betting on the same Loop driving at the same way you were I would be looking at getting between 48 and 52 miles per gallon but unlike the Ford Fusion Energy plug-in mine is not a plug-in and I am at the disadvantage of not having the p r e v range and not having much power available as my Eevee portion because my car was designed for the electric motor to assist at higher speeds and not be a primary but I have found that in my 2007 Prius in some circumstances I can still get the car to kick into Eevee mode even going down the interstate and usually when it kicks into Eevee mode going down the interstate it will run it for about half of mile to a mile and then it will kick back into it's hybrid mode where it runs the gas engine to help push it down the road and for The commenter Who said why do people buy expensive hybrid cars like this on many models of cars that have a gas only version and a hybrid version the hybrid version usually is not much more expensive then the gas version and the increase fuel economy which is generally about 8 miles per gallon better than the non hybrid version makes sense in the long run cuz of what you're going to save on gas especially considering that the other engine that the fusion runs that would be at the same price point would be running mid-grade and not getting as good as fuel economy or you could buy the non hybrid 4 cylinder and run regular grade fuel and you would be looking at about a 34 to 36 mile per gallon average where that car just did a 44 mile per gallon average when you take into account the cost of fuel and how much extra range you get out of the hybrid which is another reason why many people will buy the hybrid version of a gasoline car cuz they do have much better range same size gas tank easily looking at another 325 usually more like 8 miles per gallon so the extra range on the vehicle is also a selling point especially only plug-in hybrids where most Americans are looking at going easily over a thousand miles before having to fill up again if they just plug it in every night and most Americans if they plug the car in at night are paying a lot less per mile to drive the car and it's Evie mode than they would be to drive it and it's gas mode my Prius that easily obtained mid-forties even lower 50s for fuel economy is still costing me about $0.06 per mile in gas alone to drive versus the maybe two cents per mile that that car costs in electric mode so when you actually sit back and do the analytics on at all the plug-in hybrid really does start to make sense because of how much more cheaply you can run the car over the course of the lifetime of the car somebody who drives 10000 miles a year will be able to recuperate the extra cost of the car and about 3 years or 30,000 miles essentially if you put 30,000 miles on that car and you plug it in every night when you are at off peak rates of $0.06 a kilowatt or less and you are driving 3 miles per kilowatt of energy it is costing you $0.02 a mile to drive on electric and it is coming out to be about $0.06 per mile to drive the car on gasoline given a fuel economy in the lower 40s like that and the price of a gallon of gas and considering most people who end up driving cars like that do tend to drive quite a bit and put more like 15,000 miles a year on their car and keep Cars 3 to 5 years they will find that they easily recoup the extra cost of buying the hybrid version versus the non hybrid version even when you are talking about the even higher cost of the plugin hybrid version versus the non plug-in hybrid version as long as they plug it in every night if they are doing a 25 mile a day commute they are able to still just as easily recoup the extra money they put into paying for the system especially if there's someone who can plug their car in at work and charge it for free at work if I was in that scenario of a 25 mile round trip every day and I could plug in at work and charge my car for free and get that 21 miles everyday for free then I would just not plug it in at home one or two nights to use a little bit of the gasoline and I would plug it in at work everyday before driving home so that way I am able to get the most free energy possible to move me down the road or if my commute was less than 20 miles I would probably not plug the car in at home at all and I will just plug it in at work and I'm talking about if that is what you are coming out to with your round-trip commute would be 20 or 25 miles.

I really like your reviews, your approcach etc. What i'd like you to add would be some basic equipment to be able to compare empirical data between each car you test. For me, the "window noise is not to bad" doest say much. Id would be easy for you to get a DB meter and give a number for example. little details like that would be a great addition ! tyvm

I wish I had the energi for the winter, but with a dual heater, electric/engine core. My Fusion 2013 Hybrid gets like 35mpg on a cold start, while I get about 63mpg(5min slower back roads) in summer no AC, and 43-50mpg(Highway) using the AC set to 72.(25 miles to work) The cars learns your behavior. Breaking in the beginning feels rough but smooths out.

I have a 2014 C-Max hybrid SE, non-Energi, non-Titanium and love it. It has same MPG as the Fusion but more room inside. Just not a as comfy seats, less options, and no touchscreen, but I hear those can get quirky like the Energi versions too. Less things to break later.

Arthur Dent I don't believe I do. Basically anything held up by the suspension is sprung, anything that is not (wheels, tires, brake calipers, some suspension bits) is unsprung.

late here, but i sold honda's at the same time this car was built,, accord hybrid has the same if no just a lttle lees than the ford.. just looked at the altima a little less than the ford......i bought a ford fusion, on these 2 main things.. love the looks outside and inside, esp. at night.. and i have the 2.0 turbo engine..city about 24.6 highway on cruise at 68 ( sweet spot for this car ) i get 35.7 ave...not bad.. it has paddle shift also.. that really does not help the gas milage, thuo, when you play with the 245 hp..but overall i love my car..ruby red

Yep, if the battery is low, it'll charge as you drive, and it will use the most optimal balance of gas and electric power for the driving condition. You don't have to plug it in every night. Cold weather is a drain on the hybrid battery, so you won't get as much EV range.

It would be nice if these hybrids had a 'sport mode' that you could turn on, that would use some battery power to improve low-end acceleration. It would be better for short trips or traffic situations where you need to brake and accelerate a lot and are a bit less concerned about fuel efficiency.

Hm so the ICE is basically just like permanently stuck in the low-cam mode of i-VTEC SOHC engines? Mine does the same thing with the Atkinson Cycle, but it switches off to the high-cams when you want the power. Opposite of traditional VTEC; high-cams are running most of the time, with the lows only in low load conditions and cruising.

I can appreciate the attempt and the technology involved here but, I just can't get on board with these yet. If being "greener" is your ONLY goal and you have the money then I guess there's nothing for me to say. However, I feel that there are much better options out there. I recently got a jetta tdi loaded a little more than half of that price. Bought it as my commuter. She's rated at I believe 43 or 44 highway but without AC at around 73 mph I can sit at 50 or more mpg all day. 46 mpg with AC. It's only about 36-38 city driving and I guess that's where this car beats my jetta but it's still not worth it after the price, higher potential servicing costs, new batteries every however many years etc. and I wish you would've talked about the costs of charging. Also, I've heard people claim that it's actually less green to produce these cars but I cannot speak to that without researching. Either way, I like the channel and I agree with whoever said to get a db meter that's a great idea. If it's not too much of a conflict of interests for you and what you're doing lately, I'd love to hear your thoughts on what I've said.

I get it that hybrid vehicles are not for everybody an are not what you want. I do not know your location, but in Atlanta, GA a Jetta TDI (NON hybrid) comparable to this Fusion has an MSRP of $39,020. EDITED out error - sorry, I failed speed reading. Also Jetta TDI's are not inexpensive to maintain or repair. How do I know this? My daughter owns one(46 mpg best) and so does my business partner(51 mpg best) and I get first hand feedback from both. Any hybrid vehicle and particularly plugin EVs or plugin hybrids are well suited for in-town/urban operation. Plugin hybrids have the option of infinite range on ICE power after the battery is exhausted as long as you feed it fuel. Batteries are projected to last 8-10 years and the replacement price goes down every year. Cost to charge is going to be different according to what your electric utility charges per kilowatt hour. As an example our electricity cost approximately $0.11/KWh and my neighbor has a Chevy Volt that costs him about $1.25 per charge($37.50 per month) each to travel 40-50 miles(1350 miles average per month) or about $0.027(2.7 cents) per mile on battery alone. I would expect the same amount of KWh in California to cost much more. I have researched and a plugin hybrid is no less green to produce than a conventional ICE only powered vehicle. When comparing from concept to salvage/recycle a conventional vehicle is much less enviro friendly than a plugin hybrid. I agree also, comparative metrics would be a great addition. After seeing this video and not checking if this is your normal habbit.. (sorry about that) I've come to understand that you hold the steering wheel at 10 & 2, 10 & 2 is really not reconmended for driving at all. Why you ask? -In the case of a (god forbid) car crash, your right hand (or fist) will be coming right at the passenger on your side, at aprox. 200Mph, thus destrying his face, as well as disintegrating your hand... -Apart from this hazzard, while holding the steering wheel at 10&2, your flexibility is of less as it could be, with the correct form. (try it compared to what I reconmend) I am really sorry for ending this like that But I'm afraid I don't have enough time at the moment, so I'll simply say it - hold your steering wheel at 9:15 & 2:45. 9:15 & 2:45 will grantt you the maximum flexibility of movement and enough comfort for driving a long cruise. I never understood this, why leave the intake valve open a little longer on compression, why not just increase the contecting rod length, or just open the intake valve for a shorter period,

Because if you have a longer connecting rod - you would also increase the travel needed for compression as well as expansion, and defeat the point of thermal efficiency -- While if you open the intake for a shorter duration, part of the time used during the intake stroke would be fighting against a partial vacuum in the cylinder (since both valves would be closed during the piston's downward travel), robbing power and also defeating the efficiency. To experiment - try pulling the plunger down on a syringe with your finger over the hole. It's rather hard to do - lol.

gokartbuyer I don't know all the answers, but you could say the same about anything. What if the door locks are jammed? What if the starter motor dies? What if the transmission seizes? It won't be as reliable as a hand brake, in the sense that's it's more sophisticated and electronic, but so long as they choose quality parts that doesn't mean it can't be reliable.

Never understood the point of creating a fuel efficient, expensive car. What market is this targeting? People with money that don't enjoy paying for gas? Most people that put that much into a car will drive a BMW, Audi, Merc or a Cadillac. They need to concentrate on creating a hybrid that has 4 wheels, doesn't look terrible and is cheap. Then their cars can be aimed at lower & middle class people that want to save money.

If I were going to dump 40 grand on a car and my options were no guts and decent fuel economy, or high performance and -ok- fuel economy, the answer is pretty clear, a lot of the high performance BMW engines will still get over 30mpg and have more than twice the power this silly confusion of technology has. Thats what I'm gonna call this thing now, the Ford conFusion. haha

seviren s Yeah, there's that, but there's also vehicles that will get close to 40 mpg without costing $40,000. You'll never get those thousands back in the lifetime of the car unless you either keep it for life or never drive more than a few miles a day.

We live in town. She drives 5 miles to work through city. In theory, can go 2 days without using gas, recharge overnight ($1.00) and get another 2 days. Lots of people live within 10 miles of their employer.

Cost mostly but also performance, from how I understand it (I could be wrong) plastic creates less drag in turn causing better airflow then say a aluminium intake

It's something like glass filled nylon or high density polypropylene...both very strong plastics. It's smoother than aluminum castings, lighter, and pretty much just as strong. Also cheaper to manufacture. Rant: people seem to have this mentality that metal is always better in every situation. Especially on phones. Plastics when properly chosen and used can be more effective from weight, cost, and strength.

Unfortunately, the Ford Energi can only output 60kW of power from the battery pack, which limits how hard the electric motor can push. For a comparison, drag race a Nissan leaf with an 80kW motor, the leaf will crush the Energi on acceleration!

You're comparing apples and oranges. The Leaf is electric only and is limited in range. The Fusion can drive on electric for 21 miles and then use the hybrid gas/electric to continue on your journey. Good luck traveling 300 miles in a Leaf...it will take you 2 days to stop and charge the battery overnight. By the way...in a race the Fusion would crush the Leaf because it also has a turbocharged gas engine to accompany the electric motor.

Paul Baker Let me put it to you this way. Nissan Leaf delivers its advertised capability. Energi fails to deliver the rated 88kW. You can’t get more than 60kW from Energi.

21 mile range......why the hell are they so bad..Tesla hits 250 miles....what do the scientists at ford not understand that Eon Musk does....21 mile range is disgusting....yeah it's hybrid..but imagine a hybrid with the range of a tesla....way mroe fuel efficient...not to mention the tesla Model S P85 broke the record for the fastest 4 door sedan

3yrs old, but Tesla uses the undercarriage to store the entire battery system. No fuel tank or exhaust system. That is a 14 gallon tank, and exhaust piping and equipment to route fuel and to mount the exhuast all gone. Hybrids still have to house all the components of a combustion engine system. Have Tesla throw a 4 cylinder ICE in and see what happens...
