Want a fuel-sipping, tree-hugging sedan with stunning good looks and carpool lane access with only one person in the car? Ford thinks they have the answer in the 2014 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid sedan. Can jamming bigger battery and a gasoline/electric drivetrain behind Ford's sexy grille continue the love affair the press has had with Ford's world-car? More importantly, can this Ford hybrid live up to its EPA numbers? Let's find out.
Exterior
The new Fusion is as striking as the old one was bland. Up front we have an Aston-Martin inspired grille, angry headlamps and a tastefully reserved quantity of chrome. Out back we have a less daring rear end that some of my friends thought looked "unfinished" as if Ford just cut the sausage to the desired length. The stubby tail makes parallel parking a bit easier since it's easy to know where your Fusion ends but I suspect rear-end repairs will be more costly than sedans with a more traditional bumper protrusion. The aggressive looks from the Optima and Fusion are refreshing in a segment full of humdrum slab sides and unrestrained chrome bling. I find the new Accord elegant in a 1990s Lexus sort of way, but the large green house screams family sedan. Toyota seems to have mated an edgy nose with refrigerator flat door panels to create a Camry that's far from ugly but also far from sexy. Meanwhile VW's Passat TDI strikes a very conservative pose with a large horizontal grille and segment-standard slab sides.
Interior
The new Fusion's cabin has a level of refinement normally associated with European brands, and that makes sense since our Fusion is their Mondeo. The fit and finish in our tester was excellent with perfect seams and substantial feeling controls. While the new tiller doesn't get soft split-grain leather like the new Accord, Ford's new button arrangements are easier to use, easier to reach and feel better built than the wheel in the C-MAX and Escape. Like other Fusion models, most Hybrids sitting on the lot will look as if they were carved out of a single piece of black plastic. Selecting the tan cloth or the [seemingly] rare tan leather interior helps the interior feel warmer but there's no way to avoid the large expanse of black that is the dashboard, carpet and large portion of the doors. If you love tan, keep in mind the Titanium comes only in black.

I ordered my Ford Fusion Energi Titanium...it took 8 weeks to come in, but I got all the options. Currently we are getting 75MPG and my wife's commute is 40 mile round trip, and we have had to use the heater, so 75mpg is really good for Winter. We have a 240v in the garage that I got installed with my Leaf and plug it in any time it is parked in the garage (makes a huge difference). I'm looking forward to seeing the MPG for summer driving. BTW, Great job on this review and the subsection reviews too. I like how you made the performance part of the review a nice comparison between the different plug in cars, and not a comparison of every car. I'm also pleased you took the time to post your actual MPG performance of the car instead of being lazy and just posting the EPA numbers like so many other reviewers do. BTW, you are absolutely right about the back seats, I'm 6'9", and getting in the back seat isn't an option for me. :/ And the Trunk, I almost didn't get it for that one reason.

I actually bought a Silver Fusion Energi on June 7th, 2014 and absolutely love it. I drive short trips to work and back and very seldom use the gas mode. In fact I still have a 1/4 of a tank of gas from when I bought the vehicle. Still have not put any gas in it. My average MPG at this point is 223.3 mpg. This vehicle is built very well, just like the regular non-hybrid models. Unless you see the circle where you plug it in, you would never know it was an electric vehicle, inside or outside.

Great review, Alex. It is 8 years old as I view it. Consumers who can’t swing a 2022 Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6 should look this video up. The Energi is a good used car, and compares nicely with the new cars, for those who don’t want to plunk out $60 for a new EV.

Thank you Alex. I was on the edge concerning purchasing a Ford Fusion Energi Plug In and yesterday put a down payment on the 2014 Ford Fusion Energi SE. I tried to make sure I got a stripped down version but the dealer is always trying to pump up the cost. The IRS has posted a $4,007.00 for 2013-2014 for the Ford Fusion Energi SE or Titanium. I live in SC so they have a tax credit of $667 for the purchase of any plug-in/hybrid, plus $111 for the first 5 kWh and then $111 for each kWh over (capped at $2,000). The wording is for the capacity of the car not the battery size. Ford has the capacity of 35 kWh for the Energi. Because of the wording - I believe I can recoup the $2,000. This would bring my combined tax credits to $6,007 (wahoo). Your review helped put me at ease concerning purchasing the Ford Fusion Energi SE. I am so excited. I pick the car up today!!!

I have a 2016 titanium energi fusion. It has 70000 miles and have had zero issues. Normal oil changes were done and tires changed . The only things I don’t like is that the lug nuts for the wheels are garbage (replace easy at mechanic for $50). The truck is tight on space. I did rip the leather in my passenger side seat which, I’m not sure if I was too tough on it, but it did rip. Would I buy again- no question. I travel over 100miles in my car daily and it’s very comfortable and has a smooth ride. I love this car and would buy another.

Watched this as I'm about to go look at a 14 Ford Fusion Energi with 80k miles on it. They've come down so much that at this point I think the fuel savings actually start to become competitive with buying a slightly cheaper gas version. This one is priced at $12k, I saw another SE that was priced at around $10k with similar miles.. In a used car, that seems like the little extra is worth it!

Excellent detailed review. Regarding cost I think some could actually save so I partially disagree there with the conclusion: 1) You get the 4K in federal rebates (and additional $1500 in CA). That covers at least for Accord the premium 2) You can cover most of you trips with EV. In that case we're looking at 100+ mpgE equivalent so you'd save at least 50% in fuel costs. Some can charge cheaper or for free at work or other places. 3) Extra cost in depreciation. That could wipe out savings for #2 but it's too early to tell how much it will be. Prius at least is holding up well and cost of battery replacement is going down Note the green CA car pool stickers are getting closer to running out. Potentially by end of this year. But that's definitely big plus if you still can get it.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
The rebates do depend on your tax situation but compared to a comparable Accord with the non-hybrid CVT drivetrain it would be hard to save money on this. I still like the Accord hybrid and the Fusion hybrid however.
@luc7976
@luc7976 10 жыл бұрын
Alex on Autos Ah yes very true when compared to non-hybrid when highway mpg is only slightly lower. For some reason I assumed you compared to hybrid. In my case I have similar long commute so it still saves me but certainly most have much shorter commutes. I get on average 75 mpg with Accord PHEV (but no hill like highway 17 I need to cross).

Hi Alex, how does the Fusion and Accord compare to the Jetta hybrid in terms of driving dynamics? Would assume the Jetta is sportier and more fun to drive since it has a similar suspension to the GLI and the DSG. Great review as always.
@luc7976
@luc7976 10 жыл бұрын
Compared to PHEV or Hybrid models? Both Fusion and Accord PHEV's are lot heavier and larger to begin with but even more so with the extra PHEV battery pack. To me Fusion PHEV felt bit heavy from acceleration and in corners but still overall good road feel similar to hybrid model (just heavier). Accord has little bit less road feel but feels lighter and little bit faster (and suspension is bit softer). Compared to Hybrid models the Jetta may feel quicker but price wise I don't think it's as good value compared to either hybrid variant. It's lot smaller car and mpg isn't better than either one (and lower than Accord). It also misses some safety features you can't get.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
The Jetta is lighter and feels much smaller. The Accord and Fusion are a size bigger in just about every way. Despite this the Jetta doesn't necessarily feel more nimble, except in very tight corners.

the43k In your opinion, which is the better car - Ford Fusion or the Chevy Volt? What's the strong points and weak points of both cars?
@NJRenewableEnergy
@NJRenewableEnergy 10 жыл бұрын
You Toober In short…..As a EV. The volt… It goes further in EV, quicker, better engineered as an EV. Fusion- bigger, nicer, holds 5… goes less in EV, goes into gas mode easier..
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
You Toober I would take the Fusion over the Volt. The Volt has a longer EV range but results in more compromises over the Fusion Energi or C-Max Energi. The lack of a 5th seat, increased weight and lower rent interior are the trade offs for the bigger battery.
@You-Toober
@You-Toober 10 жыл бұрын
Alex on Autos the43k Thanks for responding. Also, in your opinion, and from your knowledge and experience, would you recommend electric cars over combustion engine cars? Are they really a good buy? I ask because I was considering buying an electric car (the Chevy Volt, Smart electric car are the main candidates) and i'm seeing posts stating that it wouldn't make sense to buy an electric car because: - they are more expensive than regular combustion engine cars - in the short term and long term. - you have to factor in the pollution caused by the factories that make the batteries for the cars. - the limited mileage of the electric engines - compared to combustion engines. - you eventually have to replace the battery (expensive!). etc., etc., What's your opinion on getting an electric car vs. combustion engine car?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
You Toober It is very much a personal choice and a lifestyle fit. Will the EV save you money? Probably not. Is the EV cleaner? If you live in a state with clean electricity, or you have a large solar array on your roof, then yes. If you live in the central USA, then probably not. Can you live with the limited battery range and charging times? Are you willing to rent a car or have another car for times where you may want to go beyond the range? And lastly how much is HOV lane access worth? For me, HOV lane access would save me about 45 minutes of commute time a day, that translates into 187 hours less time stick in traffic a year. What's that worth to you (if it applies)?

Great Review as always ! I would like to know Alex if the cabin tech in this vehicle is as good or better than the Honda Accord hybrid or PHEV. Whats your view if Honda does include Apple Car play this year ?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
As far as infotainment goes I'd call them nearly equal. Honda's system is newer and snappier in terms of response but I find the 2-screen interface half baked. MyFord Touch is getting old and it shows in the sluggish response times especially in navigation but it still looks very attractive. Aside from that the Ford is the tech winner with self parking, a better radar cruise control system, lane keep assist, etc. On the Apple Play front, I don't expect Honda to get that into the Accord for a while. It's not like Honda to jump in first with their main product lines.
@luc7976
@luc7976 10 жыл бұрын
Alex on Autos Honda is offering optional Siri integration in Civic and Accord right now and Honda was included in the Apple announcement. But yes otherwise not always fastest to adopt latest technologies. Not so sure Apple's system is way to go as it will only work with Apple 5 phones and if you have different phone OS you're out of luck. Do carmakers want to go that route and divide potential customers? Honda's system is not as advanced and can't recognize full address by voice for example but has better ergonomics and is easier to operate: the placement of upper screen makes it much easier to see and FM Traffic is included (no phone required). The knob is closer and won't require you to reach the screen. Not sure about Ford sync but downside with Honda's latest system that you have to use voice control when you're driving even if you could use knob to scroll through list (in that case you can only select what's on 1 page). You can btw download both manuals from their websites (ev.owners.honda.com and Ford also has owners site).

Pessimistically wrong times for charging. On L1 (110 vt) it's about 4.5 - 5 hours. On L2 (240 vt) is about 2 hours, +/- about 10% charge level, temperature will effect it. Also, You'd not use the number panel to lock when the door handle has spot to one touch lock, unlock. The big difference Ford/Chevy hybrid is the Ford's ICE or EV or both can drive the car. Chevy's was electric only. You missed the sharp edges on the inside of the steering wheel if you try to spin the wheel are there for the 3rd year running...

The HP rating for the electric motor is a bit weird, it's like the eMPG thing they do. Also, the Electric Motor probably can't push as hard when it's running with the Gas engine because of the limits of what the transmission can handle.
