The best thing about TFL Car/Truck is the real world testing. We get to see how a vehicle will do in the kind of environment where most of us live. How a vehicle does in an artificial environment is fun to watch, produces cool data points and has almost no relationship with the imperfect world in which we live. My sister was in the market for an SUV and taking the advice of her older, smarter brother(me) she bought the 2014 Jeep GC with the diesel option. Fortunately she is happy with it or I would never hear the end of it.

My sister still won't let me live down the fact that I told her Ford Contours were absolute junk when she was interested in them but forgot that same advice* and bought myself one several years later. *For the record, they actually are not junk. At least not in the V6 model.

Why would you say after the two slow 0-60 runs that "there is no substitute for torque" ?? The Jeep diesel is all about torque and has as much as most V8's at 420 pound feet and at a low rpm. Maybe you meant to say horsepower?

to put it in perspective .... the explorer, highlander, acadia, enclave, traverse, cx9, pathfinder etc etc don't even have the tow ratings to pull this boat/trailer let alone get 20 city / 28 highway

Diesels don't work so well when it's cold outside. Maybe try this test again come summer.

***** You can buy one, you just can't expect as much performance as possible from it, during the winter.

Diesels do heat up longer when it's cold but after that they achieve full performance. Don't forger that cold air has higher density so the turbo can push even more air to the engine.
@hunghuge7717
@hunghuge7717 10 жыл бұрын
Maybe in a very old diesel. Anything vaguely modern will just take a little longer to get warm. Petrols on the other hand require a set amount of fuel for a set amount of oxygen to keep stoic so the colder the air the more fuel they use - making power or not. Both diesel and petrol will make more power in cold air but anything turbocharged will have a larger gain.
@sic22l
@sic22l 10 жыл бұрын
hung huge Actually modern diesels are more efficient so they need more time to warm up. I know because I have one.
@hunghuge7717
@hunghuge7717 10 жыл бұрын
sic22l Actually no because most have flaps that blank the radiator and a lot use EGR recirc, different timing and some even have electric water pumps which can vary speed. I know because I have a 2011 cooper SD among others.

What I'd be buying this vehicle for is durability and longevity. I loved my 95' Grand Cherokee Limited Edition V-8. It was fast as hell. But I can't give it a durability award because the transmission blew out around 200,000 miles without any off road use. Also, had lots of engine trouble after 150,000 miles. I know thats a lot of miles but I know Chevrolet truck owners that don't have these problems. I'd love to buy this eco-diesel but I'm afraid the transmission won't hold up.

This did a lot better than the Nissan Frontier and the RAM 1500 V6 2013 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X Pickup 0-60 MPH Towing Test (Episode 2) 2013 Ram 1500 V6 Pentastar 0-60 MPH Towing Test I see an SUV Gauntlet in the future for TFL Truck since a lot of these mid-sized and large SUV's are more capable than the mid-sized trucks and some full-sized trucks when it comes to towing (except for the lack of a tow mode, trailer sway and brake control, engine braking, etc).

As a guy who went from hauling his travel trailer with a 6.2 Raptor to a '14 HEMI Grand Cherokee, I'm interested to see your statistical findings on hauling with a HEMI-powered Grand Cherokee- I've never metered it. Also, has anyone taken into consideration the fuel economy between the Raptor and the WK2? You can WATCH the fuel gauge on the Raptor move when accelerating... Literally.
@Fordguy1997
@Fordguy1997 10 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that the Raptor has 35" tires. That gives the equivalent of a higher rear axle ratio, making it slower. If it was the regular F150 with the 6.2 vs the Silverado 6.2, I'd say they'd be dead even.

I feel like my old 2001 Durango with the 4.7L operates a lot like this diesel without the drop in hp or tq. 235HP/305TQ from the factory. My 5.9L definitely reminds me of a diesel all that low end and 335tq, ironically it loses to my 4.7L in a drag race to about 90 by quite a bit, but the 5.9L is much better at 100+. I prefer the 4.7L by far.. best mpg ive ever gotten road trip was 24.4mpg, 5.9L gets 13mpg up hill down hill cold or warm, and it rides like a dump truck!

My boat weighs in around 5000lbs (same as this boat) when loaded and even in the mountains struggled significantly less... All I was commenting was that I was expecting this to accelerate more quickly with the boat behind it. Don't need to jump my ass.

Can I just be the first say... isn't this all sort of pointless? This is an SUV with a diesel engine, so it leans towards towing performance, not quick 0-60 times. If you want that, get an SRT-8 Jeep.

This engine is definitely more about fuel economy.. same with the RAM 1500 with the same engine. Basically any one who wants a "fast truck" that gets "ok" MPG will buy the hemi (just keep this to chrysler branding for the sake of it) Any one who NEEDS to pull a lot of weight consistently will buy the 6.7, and any one who wants a SUV/TRUCK who does not want to go fast, nor pull 10K+ will buy this. Anything that can get close to 30MPG in this size of a vehicle and still be capable of pulling a decent amount of weight is quite intriguing, I myself would get the 5.7.

I have a question, is it wise to floor these new vesicles, I mean I have a new Versa, I have had better results when I let the engine and computer hit the sweet cam spot where the max torque is pulling the car much more harder without using WOT, can you guys use a progressive throttle input and see if it yields a better time. I know I have a cheap ass car, but I have notice that it pulls harder when it not floored.
@1guyin10
@1guyin10 10 жыл бұрын
What you are experiencing has more to do with the way the CVT works. With a geared transmission it is only going to accelerate as fast as it can accelerate. WOT only serves to ensure that it is doing all it can do. Whatever RPM it is programmed for is where it will shift. Some CVTs want to hold the engine at max RPM when you use WOT and will accelerate faster and less annoyingly if partial throttle is used.

Worth noting, save yourself $1500-$3300 and a shitload of trouble when it comes time to buy fuel and get yourself the HEMI instead. By the way, the diesel is a $4500-$6500 upgrade, depending on if we're talking the Overland or Limited trim, because you're FORCED to get their poorly engineered adaptive cruise package, adding another $1995 to the price.

the grand Cherokee has shit for gears, and the raptor has 4.10's. if the Cherokee had 4.10's instead of the 3.42s or whatever comes with it (i just know they are numerically low and poop) then it would be a lot better.
@Dexter_Solid
@Dexter_Solid 9 жыл бұрын
Its a diesel, 4.10s are pointless for it, the last thing you want is to rev out the engine like this, higher gearing would actually be better for it, just look at the tach in the second pass, the engine is well above 3000rpm, I can promise you that anything over 3000 the engine is greatly loosing efficiency. Secondly diesels just arent fast, a raptor towing that boat would be lucky to break 10 mpg, the jeep would probably be above the raptor's empty driving.
@famousmidnight
@famousmidnight 8 жыл бұрын
+letterpool 4.10's in a highway vehicle meant mostly for fuel mileage and towing, great idea. Raptor which is in a totally different category of vehicles has 4.10's because it was designed around trail driving or off-roading at low-mid speed with low end grunt.

I am sorry but this is plain stupidity. I tow everything from boats to 10,000 lb+ horse trailers and you don't 'floor' the car. Its an SUV. NOT a truck. Whether towing with my truck or SUV I don't drive like that. This is something to tow once in a while. Flooring a truck designed to be a workhorse is one thing. Flooring a vehicle, that is mostly a city commuter, with a large boat on the back is redicilous. No one who tows properly (and who actually wants their vehicle (engine, trans, suspension) to last more than 20,000 miles) would not floor the car or tow like you guys do. You down gear for hills (going up or down). Help the car. Use easy starts and stops. You don't drive it at 80 in the outside lane or floor it to get going. Your fans of real world testing, but this isn't real world. Its not even worst case scenario. This was a waste of my time and I feel sorry for that poor Jeep.
