I just traded a 2008 Ford Super Duty 6.4 Diesel to a 2014 Tundra because Toyota did NOT change their drive train. My friend traded his 2012 Ford Super Duty King Rancher 6.7 Diesel to a 2014 Toyota for the same reason that I did. Both his Ford and mine's engines were turds. Both were riddled with problems and the reason for this is because rather than fine tune a power train, Ford just throws in a new engine with an all new set of problems into each new truck. Keep up the good work Toyota. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

Ford does changed their engines a lot for sure. The 7.3 was a great engine and after that the 6.0's and the 6.4 were spotty at best. I know they are making their own and dropped navi star because of the problems. I looked at a 12 tundra and was impressed with the power and drive train it was the little things I hated. The inside was ulgy as hell and the back seat was huge but didn't fold up. I also think they have over looked a factory trailer brake box. They did make a few updateds on the 14 with the inside and back seat but still no dam trailer brake. I ended up with a 12 F150 ecoboost and love it and haven't has a single problem but time will tell. Good luck with your tundra I sure its going to be a nice truck.

How do you and your friend go from buying 3/4 or 1-ton diesel workhorses that can payload 7000lbs or tow 10 tons, to a truck that can do maybe half those numbers, yet it's better? Your story seems very fishy. If you didn't need that kind of power in the first place, why did you bother?

It's ridiculous how you Ford, GM and Ram( no longer dodge may I remind you) fans come on here, watch the whole video about a truck you supposedly don't even support, and then waste your time pointing out all the flaws it has and saying "Ford can do it better". This video isn't about Ford and none of you are getting paid to submit your opinions on other trucks. So why?..

Love my 14 Tundra! 3hr drive to work and back twice a week! No issues, but the battery. It died at 36k. Other than that, she is a beast! I also owned a 2010, not one issue. Only reason why I traded it was because I loved the new design.

If you need a truck to go camping and pull a boat on the weekends, I dont think it really matters what you buy, if you need a truck to pound into the ground, I really think a toyota is the only way to go. I pound a tacoma daily in a harsh lawn service environment towing well over its capacities and it hasn't let me down once. Ive tried american trucks, not one has made it as long as my tacoma. I will soon buy a tundra to expand my business and Im sure it will be like the tacoma, just more.

Great job on the hands-on review and pointing out the lack of integrated brake control and locking diff. True you can add aftermarket brake controller, but getting an locking diff after spending the big bucks on a new Tundra is a show stopper for us. They are so close.

Love that the first images of this vehicle are with yes, a horse trailer, precisely the only reason I bought it. I trust it to haul the ponies & I safely up the crazy hills of Oregon. I've never owned a truck, super surprised how luxurious it is inside. Best of both worlds and I wasn't even asking for that in a truck. Modern and drives like silk.

@Stephen Watson...drives normally. But around here your either stopping and speeding plus the weather here gets extremely hot during summers. We reached 110 yesterday with the humidity. One issue he did have with the truck was a tire that coming out of alignment. Toyota kept fixing it, but maybe that was the reason why. But he had about 13,000 miles on the truck. They just kept rotating his tires and never told him if it was a mechanical issue. He didn't drive off road either.

the tundra is also avaliable with the 4.0l V6(240hp), 4.6L V8(302hp), and the 5.7(381hp). the 5.7 is clearly aimed at the ram hemi because the GM's biggest engine in their 1/2 tons is the 6.2 with over 400hp, ford also has a 6.2 with 400+ hp. ford/GM dont make 380hp V8s. most tundras have the 4.6 which gets a decent 15/20mpg

One thing I did love about this truck is the exhaust note on the 4.6 and the 5.7. These trucks can run. But those big gears make this truck very thirsty. My brother's 5.7 would barely get 12 mpg. Very horrible lol but the exhaust note was just perfect. One thing I give them credit for. On these 2014's it looks like they gave up on the back and slapped a nissan frontier on the back.

I'm going to say it, I'm a Ford guy. The tundra is a hell of a truck, don't get me wrong but they are competing in a market where truck buyers are completely loyal! Maybe with cars you gain market share, but a man who loves a GM will stick with GM. A man who loves Ram will always love Ram and a man who loves Ford will always love Ford. Of course goes the same for the Tundra owners who are loyal. But the F150, Ram, and The GM twins have been around for so long which is why they will never take

The American Made ranking is based on sales in conjunction with the other criteria you imply. The F150 outsold any other vehicle, that is why it is number 1. From the article: "The F-150 snapped a four-year streak for the Camry and earned the No. 1 spot in Cars.com's 2013 American-Made index, the Web site said today in an e-mailed statement. The index ranks model lines based on their sales and whether the car or truck parts and the completed vehicles are built in the U.S."

Not all of your current owners love the powertrain. My company decided to try a Tundra as one of our company vehicles. It's a 2010 and is on its 3rd transmission and gets worse gas mileage than our Silverado 3500. It's a truck we can't use like a truck. Even our old POS 2002 F150 has held up better for 270k miles hauling trailers and the guys in the machine shop used to use it to haul away scrap bins. We will be selling the Tundra soon, though...so if one of you wants one...

I recently purchased a 2014 Toyota Tundra Limited Crewmax. Love it so far about 500 miles on it. I have some questions I was looking for advice on. 1. This is my first big vehicle so can anyone provide some tips on parking in tight parking spots? I know backing in has better turning radius however I notice when I am pulling into a spot with cars on each side I feel like I am going to hit the other car, at least with 90 degree angle spots. The parking spots that are angled are not too bad. So what tips can you guys give on parking between cars whether it be backing in or pulling in forward. (I have tried wide turns but sometimes it just doesn't cut it in a small parking lot) I read somewhere about pulling up behind the car to the left and then backing up to straighten up and pull in but havent had success doing that yet :| 2. Is it normal for the Tundra to not shift when accelerating quickly until 5-6 RPM mark? The transmission and shifting is very smooth in normal acceleration and driving. However if I am at a light and decide to "punch" the gas it feels like it takes to long to shift? It runs up to 5-6 before it shifts. From what I saw online it seems like its normal. At least from the videos I have watched. Just want to get more opinions on this. I noticed when I am driving that a small range of the pedal is "soft" and its not until I pass a certain point that the power of the 5.7 V8 really feels like it kicks in 3. Anyone know what the weight limit for the tailgate and step bars are? I believe Toyota doesnt suggest a weight however I was thinking if you have people sitting on the tailgate to not exceed 600 pounds and the step bars 500? Given the step bars are just to get in the truck not to stand on but just wondering if anyone has tested or knows of what it is capable of 4. What is your real world MPG? I am getting 13.8 right now (mainly because I am still in the "test" phase, as in punch the gas sometimes) Thanks guys!
@Tmoua
@Tmoua 11 жыл бұрын
Hi. When you punch the gas pedal it is supposed to rev highly that is where all the horse power is at higher rpm. The best thing to know is that the tundra is hands down best hauler for a half ton. What car magazine or shows don't point out really is the transmission of the vehicle. The tundras transmission is the best geared rated at 4:30/1 revolution. Though its a little worse on gas you won't have to worry about any transmission problems like ford dodge and chevy where they are notoriously horiable on transmission failure or kick outs. I know ford fans will be telling you that they can tow more but its a load of crap. Toyota could back up their words with test as the other three are all talk and numbers that are believed to tow. Ford and chevy uses 3:7/1 or 3:55/1 gear ratio which isn't best suited for towing. Motor wise no motor made from ford or chevy and dodge with the same displacement can produce hp to wheel ratio. Your driving skills will adapt as the more you drive it. Big vehicles are harder to judge and see but after a few thousand miles it will be like driving a small car. 13mpg city 18mpg hwy. Because of 4:30/1 ratio. I dont know the limit weight for the tail bar. "The real recognize the real, even the fake recognize the real. The haters recognize the real even though they hate admit it toyota tundra has the best motor and power train of all half ton trucks and that is as real as it gets. You dont see ford dodge and chevy half ton hauling 300, 000lbs. Congrats on the new truck best decisions by far. Since the tundra came out with the 5.7 they won JD power every single year.

You have to remember that is an Allison 6 speed transmission. It's a work tranny made to hold together under heavy load. Not made for racing. Shift patterns are very different. I've never seen an tailgate bend but most my friends aren't 250+ lbs either, and it's under warranty for that. Step bars are the same. Ain't never seen anyone bend them by standing on them. I you want gas mileage you should have bought the Camry. Be realistic. Had Chevy all my life. Now I have a the SR5 Tundra 2014. Very impressed to date.

What's an Allison 1000? The transmission on heavy duty GM pick ups? How was that brought up? It doesn't remotely have anything to do with the tundra? And yeah Toyota undoubtedly has the best towing hauling and overall most for your money in a half ton truck, ford is shit, they won't tell you that in the magazines. They're engines sound like electric motors and they're horribly gutless. And as for parking, you just have to get used to it. It's not really something you can read about or be taught you just have to become familiar with how to get it into places that would be easy for a car.

I think the Tundras are badass futuristic looking trucks. You can go to Camburg Suspension and build a truck that'll compete with a Raptor any day. But there are two things keep me from buying a new Tundra. Box the frames and go back to six lug wheels. Yeah a trailer braking system would be nice but those two strengthening components would make this truck ten times better.

The excellent powertrains are not the issue. The trouble I have with it is that's it too bulky at the outside and too small inside... I'm 6'2" and I'm amazed how poor the headroom is. The innovation I'm looking for is in the driving dynamics... All these full size trucks are poor at it. Function ...all horsepower and sipped but no true joy in driving. I loved my old 1988 Silverado and I truly love my 1993 5 speed V6 extra cab Toyota 4x4 truck. Those trucks brought a smile to my face.

I like the looks of this truck better than I do the older one. I think the Toyota guy was saying that their trucks are good for both work and hauling the family in comfort. As for the newer motors I suspect they want to wait and see how well they work. It seems they want to let the other companies spend the money and take the chances. That or they figure their customers like the simplicity or ideal of tried and true. Wonder what the price on a new Tundra is like compared to the others. Are you getting more for your money?

(check out the geeksquad's intake mod and the new hypertech interceptor. I'm seeing major gains.)

I'm Japanese and I love American trucks because they are more powerful and reliable than Tundta/Tacoma.

What would happen if Toyota, Ford, Chevy, and Dodge engineers got together and made a pick-up truck? Would it be the ultimate pick up truck?

Other truck manufacturers don't "fix" their engines, they replace them. It's called being not cheap!

Many people make a big deal that the engine in the Tundra is the same....look at the Silverado/GMC, they have the same old 5.3 for decades now. Toyota stayed w/ the same engine bcuz it's great already...why change it. It was the best engine when the '07 Tundra came out.

I think what people refer to is that even gm is on version number 4 I think of the 5.3 since it's launch 18-19 years ago and the other guys have changed here and there even though they sometimes stay on the same displacement. I agree though, the tundra power plant seems to have been great for the last 10 years.

The exterior is a minor upgrade, and the interior is rugged... Which is nice! But it just doesn't compare to the over haul on design inside and out with the big three... Sign GM Fan!

Toyota should sell it with the 4.5L twin turbo V8 diesel from the Land Cruiser 200 series, 268hp & 480lb-ft.

there were a lot of trucks that are better then the eco boost ford considering the 3.0 diesel ram can out tow your truck, plus the tundra is a beast and has a much better build

I got 8.99 seconds to 60 using my iPhone timer. Here is Texas at sea level my Crewmax 4x4 scoots to 60 in 6.6 seconds. Fast for a stock truck..

Dont bitch about Toyota C frame... Toyotas fully boxed frame was a prototype and was so strong that if taking bumps in the road too harshly it would blow the rear window out. Toyotas C frames are very good.

I'm baffled by that Marketing Planner. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?" Toyota does realize that offering more than one power train makes that truck more marketable no? Then he says "After speaking with our current customers, they love our powertrain." That's awesome. Are you marketing to your current customers or looking to add customers? I'd think Toyota would be more aggressive about attracting new buyers.

They are all good trucks if taken care of and maintained. The tundra just sucks in gas mileage but other than that it's an all around good truck
