Me too, then I remembered that only works on low level wizards and he had to let them get powerful enough to talk about the class abilities. High level wizards can break games so bad the poor GM either has to flip the table to go cry in a corner.

Even in the practically nonexistent scenario that a smite gets counterspelled, you still take damage from the paladin's weapon. Sure, you're not dealing 8 billion d8 extra damage, but it's not like when a spell is countered and just completely fizzles. And frankly, who's targeting the paladin when they have an aura of protection and presumably a good con score?

You guys remember Counterspell was nerfed, right? You also forget that 2014 Divine Smite is a class ability, not a spell, (thus it's not subject to counterspell or antimagic field), Plus 2014 Oath of Ancients is straight-up resistant to ALL damage from spells regardless of damage type. even an Overchanelled Fireball only does 15 damage if I make the save since the resistance stacks with the successful save. Ancients even already had Misty Step in 2014. A Wizard is not winning that fight by just spamming fireball.

An important thing to know about 2024 classes, is that although it has "less" subclasses, all the previous subclasses that arent stated in the new 2024 books are backwards compatable. so every old school of wizard (except the 4 stated) are still able to be used. Eventually (what wotc said idk if its true) they want to remaster every subclass for the 2024 rules and books meaning that the schools and races will be updated eventually. but in the meantime the old ones are usable for a 2024 character.

I still think an optimized 2014 wizard will beat a 2024 wizard. Infinite Shield/Silvery Barbs and 2014 counterspell/forcecage is a hell of a drug. And if you just pick all the "good" spells, you'll have more spell preparations than you will ever need.
