He's absolutely wonderful. Check him out playing with Christian McBride on NPR's Piano Jazz. He plays "The Single Petal of a Rose" and it almost moves me to tears. He and Christian McBride are so lucky to have each other and we are so lucky that they play together.

To anyone who wonders why this fellow lost to Sullivan Fortner; 1) Christian Sands already had a successful career with McBride at the time, and part of the point of the competition is to reveal new talent and give them a boost towards a career. 2) Christian's style is very in-the-changes and standards: he doesn't often play around with the wild alterations and choices that fortner does. While his may sound nicer and better to the ear, Sullivan's style of going crazy similar to monk naturally shows off more harmonic knowledge and probably gave him the extra boost to win.

Fortner had been playing with Roy Hargrove with 5 years; I wouldn't say he was some unknown up-and-comer. The real reason is that both Sands and Fortner are killing players and it could have gone to either of them on any given night!

+Shaquille Noel yeah, Sullivan Fortner won! Maybe the judges figured Christian Sand has already sort of "made it" ie career with Christian McBride and two Grammy nominations and a win I think etc www.americanpianists.org/fellowships/jazzcompetitions

No, sorry, he’s good but certainly not the greatest today, while you have the likes of Chick Corea, Monty Alexander and Keith Jarrett still with us he’s not even the best Jazz pianist.
