Chrysler's largest sedan went under the knife for 2015 with interior and exterior tweaks to keep the big sedan fresh. For nearly 10 years Chrysler has been trying to figure out exactly what their large RWD should compete with. Is the 300 a near-luxury player? For 2015 Chrysler says no, yet the refreshed 2015 300C, especially in 300C Platinum trim gives the closely related Maserati Ghibli a run for its money.
Up front we get a nee front end with optional LED fog lamps, HID lamps that steer and a new grille that's bolder and more true to the first generation "new 300." The lower valance gets a tweak to make it look more harmonious when parked to Chrysler's mid-sized 200 sedan and we have new tail lamps in the rear with LED lights and a new style.
Under the hood it's the same 3.6L V6 and 5.7L Hemi driving the 300 down the road. You'll note that the 6.4L SRT engine is no longer available in the 300 since sales were slow. From 2015 onward the 300 SRT will only be sold in markets where the Dodge Charger SRT is not sold leaving the Dodge brand to carry on the high-horsepower banner. For 2015 the 5.7L V8 gets the ZF 8HP 8-Speed automatic transmission that has been spreading across teh Chrysler lineup, although it loses the optional AWD system in the process. Chrysler tells us the take rate was too low so if you want a V8 and AWD, get the 2014 while supplies last.
The interior of the 300 has the biggest change. There's a new instrument cluster, new audio systems, new seats that increase rear legroom and more refinement all the way around. While you can still find some hard plastics in the cabin, there are fewer than in the Ford Taurus, Chevrolet Impala or Toyota Avalon and all the other materials are a step above the competition. Platinum models get quilted leather seats and doors and a leather dashboard that propel the 300C ahead of near luxury entries like the Lincoln MKS, Cadillac XTS, Volvo S80, Buick LaCrosse and Acura RLX.
Oddly rounding everything up, the 2015 model holds the line on pricing being the same as the outgoing 2014 model despite the improved feature set and the major wins over the Taurus, Azera and Cadenza. 2015 looks like a good year for Chrysler.

Outstanding review! You hit the nail on the head with this one. I was in the market for a "newer" used car or bite the bullet and get a brand new car. I was test driving the BMW 385i, Audi A4, and the Mercedes SLK250. My wife asked "I thought you said there was a 4th car you had on your list" and I replied that I did, but really didn't think it would stack up since it was a Chrysler and the others were German imports. So she said "it's on your list, so just do it". So we went over to the Chrysler dealer and asked for a test drive. Immediatly upon entering the vehicle we could see how nice it was. All the 3 above were nice, but we expected that out of those euro cars. But this was made in Murika and we don't play that same game. We want tough, bold, excitement. So we drove the 300 around and was just blown away. I had to keep asking the salesman if all of this was included in the price, because it certainly wasn't included in those other models I mentioned. He said yes. So, long story short I"m a proud owner of a 2015 Chrysler 300S in piano black! No regrets and lovin'it......

Manifesto time: Chrysler does something that none of the other brands do; they do "old school". It isn't the metrics, although the 300 is clearly a great value. But this car, like the Charger and Challenger, and also like the Wrangler and ESPECIALLY like the Durango has an element of old school that stirs me. Yeah, there are other front engined, V8, RWD sedans. But somehow a 7 series isn't old school, nor is something like a Chevy SS. And even if you compare like with like, the Challenger is more old school than a Camaro or a Mustang. I suspect that deep within out minds is a sentiment something like "that's what a fucking car SHOULD be because that's how they were built when was a kid". I would hazard a guess that we all have a soft spot for the Crown Vic for the same reasons. With Chrysler, it isn't heritage or DNA, because they didn't build a RWD car from 1992-2005. I think it's because as the underdog outlier, they really give a shit and make it a point to bake those old school cues in. This explains their pride over the Hellcat. Audi or Benz could build something as powerful as the Hellcats, but it wouldn't be the same. That it has pushrods is a point of national pride as far as I'm concerned. The lesson here also has something to do with names. 300 and 200 are the alphanumeric exceptions, but Chrysler has real names like "real" cars are supposed to have. This will be the downfall of Cadillac, and ALREADY has been the downfall of Lincoln. Cars are supposed to have fucking names, Yohan. We are Americans, and even our engines have names! Hellcat, Hemi, Pentastar, Multi-Air, Rocket, Windsor, Rat, Big Block. I get a massive boner every time I see "392 Hemi" on the fender. I remain flaccid over "2.0" or "TSFI" or "DCT" or any of that alphabet soup. Which would you rather have; a PDK or a TorqueFlite 8? Powerglide, Rock Crusher, Muncie, Side Oiler, Slant 6, etc. In short, names are old school, and old school is good.

@kipamore
@kipamore 9 жыл бұрын
Vortexiii I assume we probably agree that Italian and French cars also have some kind of personality. I've owned 1 Saab, it definitely had a Swede vibe. So if that's true, then why don't German and Japanese cars have a character? Well, they probably do. Japanese cars I might describe as "eager". The better ones are kind of agitated and hyper, much like a terrier. Kind of like Japanese porn, where a little guy with a little dick is speed humping so fast his asscheeks are a blur. And then there's the German car, which also much logically have character. The few I've owned I would describe as "aloof". Very clean, very precise. To work on one was an exercise in frustration, because the Germans clearly draw a social class line between those who own expensive cars, and those who work on expensive cars, and there will be NO class miscegenation between the groups. To continue the porn analogy, the German takes his fucking very seriously, and his face will remain firmly set, his euro mullet will not flop wildly about in the wind, and he will hump at a perfect 120 beats per minute with no deviation like the driving electronic bass drum in a techno dance club.

Back in 2005 I saw and sat in the concept 300 and I wanted one badly. Then the production car was released and I didn't want one anymore. My reasons were the dreadful interior, the base V6 engine, the 4-speed automatic etc. Since then Chrysler has managed to truly make a silk purse of that sow's ear. The chassis was always up to the task, but everything else was disappointing. The second generation was a huge improvement and this refresh is a refinement of that improvement. Now I can safely say that I would buy a Chrysler 300. I might even take it over the MKZ Hybrid which is my favorite car in the 40-50K range at the moment. I'll have to think on that a while longer to say for sure, but the 300 is very, very attractive now.

Great review Alex! I also agree that this compares well with the Lincoln MKS, which is another vehicle I'm considering. You mentioned that this vehicle has some features the MKS doesn't have, like the nice size touch screen. However, are there important features that the MKS has that the 300 doesn't? Does anything justify the higher price point for the MKS? Thanks again for your help!

Beautiful car. Always get compared to an Impala and Avalon, but is light years ahead of both. Those cars dont turn heads. Ive owned a 2008 and now a 2012 300S and the car is nothing short of spectacular, and for a 40000$ price tag competes with the likes of BMW 5 series, Lexus, and Mercedes C Class series with ease, for half the price. Like someone said below, something about these cars (durango, cheeroke, 300, charger etc) has a old school head turning feel. Every time I pull up to a show my car turns heads, also has all the bells and whistles and a HEMI/SRT opton to boot? You cant ask for much more American muscle feel - even though FIAT and mercedes influenced, brand is very much american feelings. Love my 300 and the new styling is even better.

TechExplorer It compares quite well, the Genesis is a great car, and I do think it is more refined in many ways vs the 300, but it is also significantly more expensive, especially in V8 trim.I think the Chrysler is a better value in general, and if it were my money, I would probably take a loaded 300C Platinum over the base V8 Genesis.

I agree that the interior of the top level 300 is great, but the XTS in Platinum form has nappa leather on the dash and doors, as well as the full leather seats, while the 300 Platinum has only leather seating surfaces. I own a 300 Luxury Series for reference (the Platinum from 2013).
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
The 300 Platinum doesn't have the full leather seats as you mentioned, but the dash and doors are leather. It's a question of value at that point, is swapping the pleather for leather on side panels of the seats, adaptive suspension and some additional soft plastics on the lower dash worth $13,000 in addition to the loss of 2-speeds in your transmission, a notable difference in performance and poorer handling? When you tally it all together, I'd rather have the leather/pleather seat, the RWD platform, 8-speed automatic and save $13,000-$15,000.

@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
I am not too familiar with Uber ad far as the demographics go, but I would say that a lease return vehicle that is as large as possible with a big trunk and high fuel economy would be ideal. So something like an Avalon Hybrid, Accord Hybrid, etc would mean you could keep your costs low and therefore make more money.

Another great review, I been thinking a 300 before. And this 2015 model is even better than the 2014. I think the Dodge Charger will be a great car to cross shop with the 300. They are basically a same car but one is more luxury and that's all. If you want something nicer, 300 is for you. But I will say a fully loaded Charger is not too far away with the 300. You can also get a large car with a V8, leather and RWD. And it's look fit for me better than the 300. I am not saying 300 looks bad, I love it, but I'm in my 20's and the Charger fits for me. I will get a 2015 Charger Scat Pack, much more horsepower and cost less than a 300(Top end). Alex, when are you getting behind the wheel of a 2015 Charger? Looking forward to that review. THX! :)

Alex, are there features that the MKS has, yet the 300 lacks? In your opinion, why does the MKS have a higher price point? Thanks for the info and thanks for all the great videos!
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
Much of the difference is simply in the brand. Chrysler sees themselves as a Ford competitor rather than a Lincoln competitor (I know it sounds odd, but that is what their PR folks say) so they are pricing to compete more with the Taurus than the MKS. The main differences are a few more soft touch plastics in the MKS, slightly nicer leather, the dynamic multi-contour seats ans self-parking.

Alex on Autos If I am correct, Chrysler does not compare the car in the upper luxury class due to the Maserati Ghibi, which the 2017 Chrysler 300 will reside on. Expectation, if you want to move up, my assumption here, you would purchase the Ghibi model.

Hey Alex I'm thinking of getting a used BMW 550i sedan but I'm also considering the gt not question is, is that does the gt model have a bigger trunk since the 3 series gt does. If the trunk isn't bigger I might as well go with the sedan thanks
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
Yes it does, it's hard to tell from the spec sheets because they imply it is the same as the sedan but I think they are counting it wrong. You can put more above the tonneau cover and you also get more rear leg room and if the seats are folded, considerably more cargo room.

Alex, as you're likely tired of hearing, another outstanding review. Hadn't really thought about a 300 for awhile, the prior generation one was a little rough around the edges -- looks like this is a considerable step up. Couple questions for when you have time: First, how does the rear seat room compare to the Avalon, Impala, and LaCrosse? We do take friends with us (2 usually, 3 very seldom) and rear seat room / accommodations are important to us. Second, how does the seating height (H point) compare with the Avalon, Impala, and the Cad. XTS? My wife has "bad" knees and getting into/out of my Mazda6 is getting increasing difficult for her. Appreciate your thoughts!
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
Jim MacMurdo Rear seat room is strangely better in terms of legroom than the Avalon, Impala or LaCrosse despite the RWD layout. Middle seat room is OK, but the hump is larger than the FWD competition. Outboard headroom is generous, but a hair lower than the Avalon. The seats are perhaps a little higher off the ground than the others, but there is not much difference. VS the XTS, the rear bench is wider and a bit cushier.

Alex, would you consider this a better value than Lincoln MKZ? Does this replace the MKZ in your list of best cars. By the way, what would be in your list of best SUVs/crossovers?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
I do consider it better value than the MKZ, but the MKZ hybrid stays on my best list. It's kind of an apples-oranges thing. I would take the 300C V8 over the MKZ V6, but I think with all the varieties on the board I'd take the MKZ hybrid over them all.

You Sold Me ! I have always liked the 300 and there are just two comments I would add to this exceptional video. 1) "hard plastic". I have read that the chrysler interiors have seemed "Cheap" in the past. We have had three 300's between 2006 - 2011 and the interiors were fine. Granted the new improvements are well accepted and appreciated. My question would be what about "hard plastics" in lets say the cadillac. Does the 300 have more hard plastic than the competition? 2) in googling, I saw a photo of a red leather as well as an orange leather interior for the 300. Was that the euro SRT version or the USA "S" model. I was hoping to learn more about those awesome interior color options. BTW, I did not know that the SRT was outside the USA and I'm grateful to finally understand that. Thank you Alex. Fantastic video!

littlealpay Yes, the 300 has more hard plastic content than the Lincoln MKS, Cadillac CTS/XTS, Hyundai Genesis or even the Buick Lucerne. However, I think Chrysler has become much better about where to put the hard plastics and they are kept farther out of reach than before.

Hey Alex on Autos, I'm 25 and looking to purchase a new car. I am very attracted to the new 2015 Chrysler 300c platinum, but I do have some concerns that I was hoping to get your opinion on. Is it worth buying brand new considering depreciation and how it has affected past models (leasing is not an option with the amount of miles I drive)? Also do you think the 300c platinum is car for a mature crowd rather than for my age range? I love it compared to whats available in my price range, but the last thing I need is having what the women would refer to as an "old man's car".
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
The 300C is less of an old man's car than a Lexus ES, Buick LaCrosse, Chevy Impala, etc. While the demographics are not as youthful as the Chrysler 200, the 300 does seem to have a young following. That said I bought a Chrysler LHS in 1999 when I was 20, so I do lean towards larger cars myself.

not sure why. going back to the days of the old slant six, they are virtually bulletproof. had a 98 Grand Cherokee with 318,000 miles, ultimately it was the transfer case and differentials that wore out, It had the 318, or 5.2 liter, still ran strong and smoke-free.

Biggest disappointment with my new 300 is that while CDs may be slowly becoming obsolete, they didn't really do anything in terms of prepping folks and/or giving them a good briefing on other suggestions. I realize you can use an MP3 player, an iPhone, etc. However, they gave virtually no attention to those folks who have cd collections and specs regarding how one can rip cd's or anything on that topic. Our salesman completely breezed over it and poo poo'd all the concerns we had. In short, he couldn't have been bothered. Any suggestions of where to go? The owner's manual has little in the way of specs for SD cards and the Chrysler forums only touch on the topic.
@brucec43

+Azzurri82 Just google "how to rip CD's to mp3". Buy a $20 USB drive that holds 64GB or so and that will become your entire music collection in a tiny chip about 1/2" long. Plug it into the car's usb and go from there.
@Sowhat300
@Sowhat300 8 жыл бұрын
You have to load your cd collection on a sim card. The slot is in the lower portion of the center stack. The audio system will sort and organize the sim card. The pain is in copying your cds to a computer with a sim card reader then move them to the sim card.

Alex, I'm thinking about purchasing a 300 Limited or maybe S. I would love the C but can't afford that trim. I'm trying not to be selfish though because the 300 would be more to satisfy me. I need a comfortable family car with good rear seat leg room so I'm also considering maybe the Passat 3.6. My wife and I have one child but road trips in our current vehicle become very cramped and uncomfortable. I really love the look inside and out of the 300 and it makes be think of the old school (70's Lincoln Towncars) my dad used to own. The Passat is ok, very conservative. Any input you can offer would greatly be appreciated.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
rl1420 I'd take the 300 over the Passat. I like the seats a little better in the Passt up front, but the back seat in the 300 is hard to beat. The 300 handles better and is more fun to drive as well. You may want to also give the Toyotya Avalon and Kia Cadenza a good look while you're at it.
