It's a shame these and most other hatchbacks are dying. It's bigger than you'd think on the inside, reliable enough, and does most car stuff well enough. One of these would be a good commuter car. It's cool that Kia's kept the funky shape over three generations.

I have 264k miles on my 2015 Kia Soul base 1.6L and has a Mitsubishi auto(sport)matic transmission. Some days it's lethargic but other days it'll do a lil burnout when i least expect it. Really wishing I would've went with a Ford Taurus with the 2.0L I4 ecoboost! The Ford Taurus gets even better fuel economy on the interstate than this car. I managed an impressive 33 MPG combined in a 2013 Ford Taurus on an interstate at 75 MPH. This car? 26 MPG. Where it shines is at 30-55 MPH @ 30-33 MPG.

Hay, someone else has a manual soul! Yes, they're basic and VERY slow. But it is versatile. Before I got my truck I would use it to get hay and goat feed. I would get a bunch of sceptical looks at the CO OP, until they saw me put a bale of hay and several bags of feed the trunk with the back seats UP. Oh, and I get 34-36 mpg. Save the manuals!

I just purchased a 2019 Kia Soul Base model with the manual transmission this past weekend as my new commuter car. This wasn’t the vehicle I went to inquire about, but I test drove it anyway. I loved it and totally wasn’t expecting too! It is very easy and pleasant to drive, seats feel comfortable, and more passenger space inside than expected. Only has 23K miles so plenty of warranty left too. Win for my needs.

I drive a 2018 Kia Soul but automatic, and I can say that it's true, it feels pretty natural to drive, you seat a little bit high and you have really good visibility, and also I like the interior room, the trunk it's tiny, but the back seat is roomy.

My dad has a 2014 Soul, same engine size, but in automatic. I learned to drive on it, and drove it to work till I got my 98 manual Accord. Having watched RCR's video on the manual 2nd gen Soul, I wasn't interested. But after hearing you talk about it, I've decided that if I get the chance, I'd like to give it a test drive. I love the size and feel of the 2nd gen Kia Soul, I just do NOT like the shifting of the automatic. If I have to drive my dad's car, I either put it in the psuedo-manual mode, or I modulate the throttle much more differently than in my car, so I don't make it constantly change gears. The car I really want though, is a 2nd generation Honda Fit. There's a few options in my area, but they're a bit out of my price range, for the mileage most of them are at, with half the time no documented maintenance history. (Mostly just interested in oil changes, and ATF changes. (Or clutch work if it's manual) And of course any recalls. I've got time though. Next October is when my emissions expire on my car. So I have till then to either find a Fit, or settle for a Civic.
@Hachiro2 жыл бұрын
I did forget to mention; Our Soul has been perfectly fine in terms of reliability. My dad doesn't drive it hard at all. It's either just about to, or barely did, pass 100k miles. We did have a cat-converter scare, but that was cause my dad's job is so close, that the cat wasn't getting up to temp some times. Doing a few Italian tune ups cleared the code. I've been doing maintenance on it for the last few years. Including changing the ATF. Accidentally under-filled it by a quart, and it was shifting badly at times. Leveled it, and it's been perfect. (For an econo-car) When that cat scare came up, I looked into the process of replacing it, and was happy to learn that at least, nobody will steal the cat out of it. With the placement, it is pulled out from the engine bay. Not from under the car. Unless you're willing to spend an hour sawzawing through engine mounts, control arms, and body. So I'd say there's no need to worry xD

Thanks for that review! 👍 My wife and I bought our second generation Kia Soul + three years ago and still love it! Although marketed to 20-somethings, us old farts (in our 60s) love the way they drive, how you get in and out easily, the driving height and unobstructed view in all directions. Plus it feels bigger inside than it looks outside and you only have to move up to the Plus+ trim to get decent tech for that model year along with a more interior conveniences. The only negative is that its GDI engine requires just a bit more paying attention to its service intravals to avoid headaches down the road, but this should be the case with any car built in the last decade where engine tolerances are incredibly tight in order to meet CAFE requirements. And I still like its boxy styling in a near future where cars will soon become teardrops with wheels. 😉

I have a 2013 Soul Plus with a manual transmission. It's the last year Kia made the manual with the 2.0 engine. The gear shift is very soft. Definitely not the experience of driving a sports car with a stiffer gearbox, but it does provide better pickup than an automatic and it's more fun to drive.

Kia Soul hatred is new to me. In my opinion, it's the first "box car" of the 2000s that was done right. The Scion xB, when it first released, was ugly. The Nissan Cube was even uglier! Scion refreshed the xB, but it still never looked as good as the Kia Soul does. Furthermore, of those three, only one is still being produced. Kia thought outside of the box when they styled their "box."
