Yes sir DIY Dave I agreed with you 100 percent on oil change. I have 3 cars that requires 0w20 , I bought plenty of cheap oil from Costco and Walmart. I will change them every 5000 miles. I don't care if anyone recommend 10k miles , don't want my engines to burn oil. Like your video a lot. Very informative. Thanks stay safe bro. Maybe because am 52 yr old, I tend to do things my way. Did my first drained and refilled on my tundra transmission, shifting so smooth now. Chow

Awesome video and very easy to follow. I have the same year ES. It’s still under a certified program with the Lexus dealership (bought it a few months ago at 36k miles), and I’m letting the dealership do the oil changes since they are free for 2 years. But I’ve never changed oil in a car before, but would like to try in the future. Thanks again.

Almost drove past the ramps, dumped oil onto your driveway, didn't use new crush washer on drain bolt, cranked the drain bolt to about DOUBLE the torque spec, nearly SHEARED OFF the oil filter housing because you weren't pulling the wrench squarely when loosening, camerman angrily threw the oil filter box from obstructing the view, repeatedly called the o-ring a gasket...but other than that, great video! lmao

Thanks for watching! Didn't come close to "shearing off" the housing, have already changed the oil once since this change and removed it with no problem, along with the drain pan bolt. And in changing my own oil for years, I've NEVER replaced a drain pan bolt washer and never experienced a leak. Appreciate your input.

OP was right about Fram. Every test I've seen places them dead last, after AC, Purolater, STP, and practically everybody else. I no longer use Fram. And OP pointed out one great reason to change your oil yourself - half the time it seems the "tech" who changed the oil before, absolutely over-tightened the canister housing! When you do it you get to avoid that problem! Also: I don't know OP's particular car. But I owned two Camrys with the same engine. I found there was no need to raise the car to reach the oil drian plug. If you don't absolutely have to raise the car it's better to just not do that. Also there are aftermarket parts you can buy, to convert the cannister oil filter to a spin on filter. The part is not cheap (around $250) but it is probably worth it long term.

Is it OK to wait till the maintenance reminder shows to change oil?. I am assuming that the it computes the life of oil based one the time and miles ran. Instead of going by the common comment of 6 month 5000 miles.
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK 4 жыл бұрын
The reminder, especially in slightly older cars, goes by mileage rather than date. I always encourage people to follow a 5,000 mile/six month interval (whichever occurs first). The newer the car, the more critical that oil interval, in my opinion. It remains the single cheapest, easiest preventive maintenance you can do for your car. Thanks for watching!!

Very useful, detail video, i got very tight to replace small o-ring rubber of oil filter, you have any idea to remove bottom of oil filter cup. What is tool should lock the cup while using ratchet 3/8 to turn bottom cap? Do you need to replace drain plug washer? Thank you for sharing.
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, the filter cartridge should be tightened to only a modestly higher torque than the inner drain cap. That should allow the inner drain cap to be removed before the cartridge. There is a Toyota-branded (and aftermarket) oil filter wrench with the proper tooth cutouts and flutes to hold that outer cartridge securely. The aftermarket versions tend to be of thinner gauge metal/aluminum. I hope that I understood and answered your question! Thanks for watching!

I would figure the small gasket, the one that you didn't change in the video, after a few oil changes would need to be replaced before it got too old and brittle. How often would you recommend changing it?
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK Жыл бұрын
Among all the Toyota vehicles I've owned that use that type of filter housing, I've never changed one. That includes a Sienna we owned from showroom new for eleven years and well over 100k miles. If that drain valve is never removed, even a dry gasket will still be "sandwiched" into that valve. I'd just be diligent about checking the area for leaks after each oil change. Obviously, the "official" recommendation from Toyota is "every oil change," 😁

@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK 4 жыл бұрын
There's certainly nothing wrong with pref-iling an oil filter. I, personally never have done it and have never had a problem. The literal amount of time it takes for that filter to be filled at next engine start is so small that I seriously doubt it makes that critical a difference. Now, if a particular manufacturer expressly states to pre-fill the filter when changing, then by all means do it. Thanks for watching!

If you go back far enough the earliest oil filters were also cartridge type. After hearing you bash Fram, how do you feel about Super Tech filters? After all you are using Super Tech oil. And you want your oil filled close to capacity (not right in the middle). Why wouldn't you? Why would you want to drive around with it over ¾ quart low?

Hi Steven, and thanks for watching. I bashed Fram filters after seeing how their cheap paper filaments readily shred. It's disappointing for me because I grew up around family members who worked on cars and Fram was their go-to filter. I have no experience one way or the other with SuperTech filters, so I really can't offer much insight on them. Don't know who their OEM is. I know Williams Oil out of Texas makes their oil. As far as the fill level on the dipstick, the two marks on the stick indicate an operating range, and mid-range of that should be no problem. Again, thanks for watching!

Changed every 3-4,000 miles now with full synthetic, easy to do. I always remove the bottom part that drains the remaining oil in the canister and makes the process much cleaner, CLEAN YOUR CANISTER dont just change the filter the way it shows here. Remove any debrie from it. Get a big tool wrench to remove the canister is tough most times. Practice and Enjoy.

European cars like Volvo, Mercedes, etc for years have had these canister type filters where only the filter material insert is changed. They save tons of metal from being put into landfills. They take only a couple of minutes to change as long as they are accessible like the one in this video. Cars that have oil filters that are hard to access, no matter which type, are the ones that are a pain.

I change my 2015 Lexus ES350 every 30,000 miles yes not 3000 thousand I have over 200,000 Mi and it's still running like a champ. Here you are just wasting your money when you change the oil like this. First time I changed it was I went in to get the free oil change at 20,000 miles through Lexus ever since then 30,000 or 40,000 people don't realize oil can go that long easily when it is synthetic specifically. There's just something about people that they think they need to change that oil no idea what it is but it's just waste waste waste. And always do it yourself that way you know it's done properly and by the way there is actually no need to jack up a car or put a car on ramps if you can't reach under and unscrew that bolt with your arm I don't know what to tell you it's very easy same with the filter
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK Жыл бұрын
Waiting 20,000 miles to change oil is utter idiocy. Are you aware that the hydraulic properties of the oil are relied upon by the VVT system of the engine, and those properties *cannot* be retained after that long a change interval? Oil changes are cheap. Engines aren't. If you don't understand why it is essential to change oil on a car then why bother watching a DIY channel?

So, here are some thoughts.. If 5k between oil changes is better than 10k, then 2k is better than 5k. Where do we stop. The truth is oil gets dark immediately after the first drive due to heat. It's not about the color. A good filter is more likely to get almost all contamination for quite a long time. Many youtuberrs did an oil analysis at different intervals and there wasn't much difference before 10k. Synthetic oil doesn't break down but addeditives do at around 10k. Fram ultra is a great filter, and along with mobile 1 are probably the best filters out there. Who truly makes the Toyota filters? Definitely not toyota! Also many car are now hybrid where the engine is not running much of the time. At the end, I think 7500 intervals with a good synthetic oil and a good filter should be just fine. 10k on a hybrid would be OK too. Just my opinion based on all the research I did. Not one oil analysis at 10k showed much of a risky oil condition. Yes, more frequent oil change might be (slightly) better, or might make no difference. You decide, based on all the data as well as you time and budget if it's worth it. If you're curious, I own a 2019 hybrid lexus es300h and I change the oil using mobile 1 synthetic (0w16) and either the best Fram or mobile one filter every 10k.
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK 9 ай бұрын
Appreciate your opinion, but I defer to actual professional mechanics who all-but beg people to use a religious six-month, 5k mile oil change interval. I see too many post-mortems of too many engines where the lament was "didn't get routine oil changes." This is even more important for engines using hydraulically controlled VVT systems; they aren't just leveraging oil's lubricant or cooling properties, but it's *hydraulic* properties as well - how many test for that? It's a primary reason Toyota has moved to entirely *electronic* VVT systems. As for filters, I wouldn't put a Fram filter in my vehicles for any price. That's just my opinion. I couldn't care less about the oil's color, but it is at least superficially satisfying to see oil that *hasn't* darkened much during a regular oil interval. Bottom line? I just don't see the moral high ground in *not* doing 5k intervals *especially* given the ridiculous abuse current turbocharged 4-cylinder engines are given with this 0w16 oil. When actual mechanics who are happy to take the money to replace an engine tell people not to follow 10k/one-year intervals, I don't get the moral high ground some take by steadfastly refusing to spend that extra $40-50 a year for that *one* marginal "extra" annual oil change. The 5k mile/6 mo interval is an issue on which I won't be moved. Engines and cars are too expensive to sacrifice just for the sake of saying "I didn't do one extra oil change a year!!" Of course, you do what you want. It's your money, your car, and your decision. As for me, it's 5k or 6 mo intervals, period. Just not worth the risk on a ~$30k investment to do otherwise IMO.

Wait another hour... No, not worth it. I doubt you would get two or three more ounces. If your dipstick is right smack in the middle then you didn't fill it. Why would you want to run it ½ to ¾ quart low? Then again you may think your vehicle is level but I'm sure your driveway slopes toward the street. Whether it's enough to make a difference in the reading or not, who knows?
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments!! The two marks on the dipstick are the operating range and I believe represent no more than a quart total. By capacity of the containers, I know I've put in *over* 6.5 quarts, probably closer to 6.6. The engine capacity is 6.4 US quarts, and the filter is .4 quarts, so 6.8 is the *absolute* maximum I should put in.

@@DIYDaveOK Actually that is an assumption that most people make possibly because years ago that may have been true back in the days when full service gas stations were the norm and self service did not exist and they checked your oil for you for free at every fill-up. Our 2009 RAV4 has a difference if 1.6 quarts between the minimum mark and the maximum mark. Another Toyota has a 1.8 quart difference. So it can and does vary from model to model. With Toyota the two marks represent the minimum and maximum safe levels, if I'm correct.

@@DIYDaveOK good video! I was a bit surprised to see the oil level in the middle of the two indicators since you put plenty in. I thought it would read at the very top indicator. Maybe you checked the level too soon, it didn't drain into the pan enough? I'm not so sure color of oil indicates good or bad with modern oil and after doing some research. I have the same Lexus and do my changes at 7k. Mobil 1 extended performance was much darker at 7k than the Valvoline I previously used. Then again, maybe Mobil 1 has more detergents and thus the darker colored oil at 7k? Just a guess
@DIYDaveOK
@DIYDaveOK 4 жыл бұрын
@@BlackHawkPSU That's a valid question - I think the most likely suspect is it hadn't had time to settle in the pan fully and then wick back up the tube. As far as the clarity of the oil, i think at least part of the equation is in how hot that oil has become in operation, the age of the oil, and even the health of the engine itself.
